Blackstone Castle Board Game (Canceled)
Move, swap, and flip cards on a grid to complete missions. 20 minutes per player, for 1-4 players. 4 competitive and 2 co-op variants.
Art and videos show prototypes. Final product will have some differences.
"[In Blackstone Castle] you set yourself up not for the big kill but for the slow twisting of the screw. This takes confidence in your game play, the ability to continually readjust based on changing situations, and tactically shift to complete your goals. I love it. It keeps the player engaged, rewarding and punishing them in equal measure." - Father Geek
In Blackstone Castle you complete political tasks for the King of Avondell. He's one of the good guys in a kingdom beset by rivals, enemies and spies.
You take your instructions about which Vassals need to report to what locations on the grid from Task cards that specify two requirements each. When you complete a task, you are rewarded with allies who join your team plus victory points in recognition of your achievements.
Unique game mechanism
The grid manipulation mechanism is unique and plays like a souped-up, giant slide puzzle. Other players are very likely to "mess up" the board for you, but that's what sets a fresh challenge for you to solve on every turn.
Multiple paths to victory
In addition to tactical riddle solving, you must choose your best strategic path to victory. You decide how much to build up your team, which allies will help you the most and when to go for the gusto to complete the harder tasks the king has asked for.
This link will take you to all of our current rule sets, including one in English and an updated German translation by Jens Czaplo. Thanks, Jens!
All Kickstarter backers at level of $49 or higher will receive this six-card Knight-Wizard Task card expansion pack.
Our review from Father Geek just came in and we won their seal of approval! Here's the review.
A couple of quotes from the review:
- "... once you see how it all comes together it makes for a really entertaining and challenging game."
- " Really liked how much control the game gives to the player with meaningful restraints. I never felt that any one player had a huge advantage, but it was obvious when a player wasn’t thinking through their moves. I mean really obvious. "
For all our Games for Friends and Lovers followers, please be assured we provide cooperative play in Blackstone Castle. Here's a look at playing the King's Quest with the "Rats in the Walls" forcing-timing mechanism.
In addition, we have a cooperative variant that uses the board and cards with a completely different objective: namely, to make a pattern of Vassal cards on the board to a specific recipe. Lots of fun. This video does not show "Rats in the Walls," but the rule book tells you how to use them.
We will work with fulfillment partners to be as customs friendly as possible. All U.S. orders will be fulfilled by us from our workshop in Texas.
We don't like surprising you with additional shipping cost when you check out. Therefore, shipping costs for US, Canada, UK and EU are included in the price of the game. We will add $10 for other parts of the world to cover our additional costs.
Note: we plan to use the post-campaign survey that Kickstarter provides, rather than using a pledge manager. Therefore, what you pledge is what you will pay.
We are sorry, but we will not deliver Blackstone Castle to the following countries, because of problematic delivery conditions: Afghanistan, Brazil, DRC, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Myanmar, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela, Yemen.
Dragon Phoenix Games is primarily a two-person operation. Harvey and Carlie Cornell have been adapting other peoples' games for cooperative play under the Games for Friends and Lovers banner. Together they have created and published nearly 50 adaptations.
This is our first, brand new game of our own design. But our pipeline is long and stuffed full of fun games. We hope to bring many more to your game table over the next few years.
Thank you to the supporters of our first campaign who encouraged us to come back and try again.
A big thank you to Bryn Smith. He contributed to game development, play testing, good cheer and encouragement.
Thank you, Jens Czaplo for translating the rules into German. Twice.
Additional thanks to our game group regulars and play testers including (but not limited to): Shelly Cochran, Johnny Phan, Charles North, Eric Thurston, Julie Gunn, Brian, Loren Sides, Arrio Amirgholi, Steve Trimuar, Madeleine Byrne, Debbie Hudson, Joan Kilbourne, Bonnie Barker, Gregg Fiehler, and Joe and Sally Kane.
Thanks to the Dallas Designers Group and Tabletop Artisans Workshop for loving feedback.
Risks and challenges
Please read carefully before backing this project.
NO PLEDGE MANAGER
We will not use a pledge manager for this campaign. All information will be collected through the Kickstarter surveys after the campaign.
DELIVERY AND GAME CONVENTIONS
The game is planned to be manufactured by May 2019 and delivered in June. We believe backers are the first people who should receive the games. However, we may wish to show and sell the game at major game conventions. Ideally, the game could be manufactured, shipped and delivered to all backers before any particular convention. But, if the timing is off, please understand that we may need to sell new releases to pay for the convention.
Game manufacturing and publishing contains a number of risks. For this project, the greatest risk is that the games will be manufactured in China and shipped to the U.S. The most serious potential threats are quality problems and delivery delays. To mitigate these risks we will use a manufacturer who has a good record of delivering quality games. If any delays occur, backers will be notified promptly.
If you receive any rewards that are missing items, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will ship replacements promptly. If the item arrives damaged, we'll replace whatever is damaged. Please send along a picture to help us recover our costs.
We do not offer refunds unless we fail to deliver the games you've ordered. However, if you are completely unsatisfied with the game, please contact us and we can discuss it.
If you provide an incorrect address or fail to update your address and a shipment is returned, you must pay for re-shipment.
After this campaign you may receive updates on Dragon Phoenix Games' other projects.
By backing this project, you acknowledge and accept the risks and challenges just stated.
DOG AND CAT NAMES
We have final approval of dog and cat names. We don't plan to exercise draconian control, though the Dragons and Phoenixes out back may have opinions. However, we wish to avoid offensive names.
