Blackstone Castle Board Game (Canceled)
Move, swap, and flip cards on a grid to complete missions. 20 minutes per player, for 1-4 players. 4 competitive and 2 co-op variants.
"It's like a giant slide puzzle!"
-- Mark Streed, The Dice Tower
But this slide puzzle also has pieces that swap. And flip. And tell you what's on the other side.
Build your engine by adding Knights and Wizards to your party. Or, build a King card to increase your capacity. Or, go for a point-grab by building ploy cards. You choose.
Solve the riddle of how to complete your tasks with a brand new board arrangement on every turn.
- 2-4 players
- Age 14 and up
- 40 - 80 minutes
- Three play modes, including two different cooperative games.
You can find our current-state rules for the regular game and for the additional games here.
We now have a German translation of our rules here. Thank you to Jens Czaplo for making this translation. Our German is a bit sketchy but, as far as we can tell, it looks like Jens did a very nice job of capturing the feel of our game titles.
The rule book, or books, will be completed during this campaign in time to go to the printer when funding is complete.
We invite you to try out Blackstone Castle on Tabletopia. We have a complete setup of an intro game for 1 - 4 players.
Note: We have done all the shuffling and dealing to allow you to jump in and play. This will mean that you will see the same board and cards each time you go into this play area. Let us know if you want to play more and we'll provide a play area that allows you to shuffle the decks and deal out new cards for a new game experience.
Here's what people are saying about Blackstone Castle:
For all our Games for Friends and Lovers followers, please be assured we provide cooperative play in Blackstone Castle. We have a King's Quest variant that looks and feels a lot like the base game with a timer.
In addition, we have a cooperative variant that uses the board and cards with a completely different objective: namely, to make a pattern of Vassal cards on the board to a specific recipe. Lots of fun.
We have some ideas for stretch goals but we will discuss after we have funded and received feedback from you.

Blackstone Castle has been in development since January 2016. It originally came to Harvey in a dream. We took it with us on a cruise that Carlie won as a reward as a top performer at work and played it with folks who wandered into the ship's library (which we had pretty much taken over as gaming central). Since then we have developed, tested, developed and tested some more. We have also workshopped the game three times with groups of gamers in the Dallas, Texas area.
We chose this as our first major foray into crowdfunding and publishing our games because it has the combined virtues of being mature and affordable to produce.
We have had many hours of fun playing Blackstone Castle and we hope you will, too.
Dragon Phoenix Games is primarily a two-person operation. Harvey and Carlie Cornell have been adapting other peoples' games for cooperative play under the Games for Friends and Lovers banner. Together they have created and published over 40 adaptations.
This is our first, brand new game of our own design. But our pipeline is long and stuffed full of really fun games. We hope to bring many more to your game table over the next few years.
Harvey Nathan Cornell, IV: Game design. Harvey is the lead designer (okay the only one) at Dragon Phoenix Games. He lives, eats, breathes and, as we mentioned above, dreams game designs.
Carlie Cornell: Marketing, art, travel. Carlie is the many-hats person on the Dragon Phoenix team. She is responsible for the graphic design and illustration in Blackstone Castle. You may also blame her for any errors in the Kickstarter material. Please let us know if you find them. We want to fix them as soon as we can.
A big thank you to Bryn Smith. He contributed to game development, play testing, good cheer and encouragement.
Additional thanks to our game group regulars and play testers including (but not limited to): Shelly Cochran, Johnny Phan, Charles North (who played with us on the cruise), Erik Thurston, Julie Gunn, Brian, Loren Sides, Arrio Amirgholi, Steve Trimuar, Madeleine Byrne, Debbie Hudson, Joan Kilbourne, Bonnie Barker, Gregg Fiehler, and Joe and Sally Kane.
Special thanks to the Dallas Designers Group and Tabletop Artisans Workshop for loving feedback.
Risks and challenges
This project has completed art and is ready to go to the printer for proofing. Of course, we may have some artwork to do on goodies added by stretch goals. We plan to complete these by the time we receive funds from Kickstarter. We have identified the printer we want to work with and they are standing by.
Our budget includes printing, freight to fulfillment center(s), and final shipping to backers.
Of course, all projects that include multiple vendors and international shipping incur some risk of delays in production and shipping. However, we will hold our vendors to the highest quality standard (our budget covers that) and we will keep you informed at all stages of the process.
We have fulfillment partners lined up to help with international shipping. This project is EU, Canada, and Australia friendly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
