Welcome to doyenist
Thank you very much for looking at our project.
My name is John Kouraklis and I am the founder of Doyenist Ltd. I have been working in the higher education sector as lecturer for many years and I have experienced the challenges universities and lecturers face when it comes to record student attendance.
Doyenist provides a simple and neat solution by creating a mobile application for registering student attendance automatically.
In the following sections you can find more details about our project.
We hope you like doyenist and you decide to support our project.
If you have any feedback or questions, please feel free to contact us.
The 30-seconds series
Educational institutions track attendance for various reasons:
- To comply with regulations (VISA, Student Financing, Apprenticeship schemes, etc)
- To evaluate student engagement and performance
- To optimise resource utilisation (classrooms, groups, etc)
Methods and Technologies
There is a number of methods and technologies to keep track of student attendance. They go all the way from a simple and old pen and paper system to sophisticated systems that embed fingerprint and face recognition.
So, what's the problem?
The problem with the current systems (both manual and automated) is that they induce high financial and operational costs and may have severe impact to the student experience
- Manual Registration: Papers can be lost or misplaced and files (like spreadsheets) may never reach the administration
- Automated Registration: Specialised equipment is required in most of the solutions (Barcode/RFID cards, face/fingerprint scanners)
In all systems, time and effort is spent to make sure the attendance of the students is taken correctly. For the average UK higher educational institution, this may translate to 1,500 lost hours of teaching and a financial cost between £37,500 - £90,000 per year without considering any costs associated to administrative errors and the subsequent actions to correct them.
doyenist is a mobile application which is installed in the mobile phones of the students. It, then, registers the students automatically by identifying when the students sit in the classroom.
That's it! The students are registered automatically
No time wasted! Students don't need any specialised equipment
- Real-time view of the class sitting
- Real-time view of attendance in students' mobile phones
- Notifications from administration
- Translatable to students' native language
- Brand Building via the mobile application
- Alternative revenue streams
- Easy compliance with Tier-4 VISA and apprenticeship requirements
The primary customers of doyenist are higher education institutions. This is rather a starting point than a definition that limits the scope of the business.
- 165 State Educational Institutions
- £18.87 Billion Revenue
- 2.34 Million Students
- 217,580 Academic Staff
doyenist can be used by any organisation that requires to track attendance of individuals. Due to its nature, it is not limited to the UK market and can be used worldwide.
We have been working for sometime now on doyenist and we would like to share our journey with you.
In the timeline below, you can see what we have achieved so far and our next steps.
The following screenshots are from the alpha versions of doyenist. Internally, the project was named Doyen and we started developing it under NusEnvision before we set up a dedicated company (Doyenist Ltd).

Risks and challenges
Building software is inherently risky as it involves factors that depend on technology, timing and execution.
We have put together a great team with experience in all the essential parts of start-up businesses: expertise in software development, domain-specific knowledge, experience in project management, marketing and financial know-how.
We are committed to complete doyenist software as we believe we bring new and fresh air to solve the problem of student attendance.
In our planning, we have considered the possibility of delays in execution and unforeseen events. This demonstrates our pragmatic approach and understanding of the business and our ability to plan at strategic level.
We very much stand to honour your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
