THANK YOU for checking out our project! Z. is a 2-4 player card battle game that pits Survivors against the Fallen (zombies). It combines elements of Magic: The Gathering and other card/tabletop classics with video game sensibilities and a horror movie atmosphere.
What makes Z. a "premium" card game?
We’ve all put plenty of fake blood and real sweat into making each and every image in Z. on par with a still from a Hollywood horror film. The card images in Z. require real models, real horror makeup, and real props. If someone is holding a rocket launcher or heavy machine gun, that was really there when we took the photo. Then we put countless man hours into the editing process, Photoshopping the lighting and effects to get it just right.
Many backers have also joined in on the project, whether it's being transformed into a character for the game or doing post-processing on the hundreds of unique images we're making.
Z. includes over 450 cards in the Core Set ($100), which is roughly 100 more than you’d find in a randomized Magic: The Gathering booster box (retails for $143.96). The various Z. expansions and add-ons (check our stretch goals) add over 600 more cards to the mix, for a massive total of 1,000+ cards.
The Z. Developer Wiki
Everyone getting a copy of the Core Set also gets a Producer credit as well as immediate access to the Z. developer Wiki, where you can vote on which image we’ll use for various cards (see examples below), test early versions of the game, discuss card and gameplay balances, and even make feature suggestions or request entirely new cards to be added to the game!
A high quality print of ANY Z. image. Over 250 unique images to choose from!
$30 for 1, $55 for 2, and $75 for 3. $20 for additional prints after that.
If you’d like to add prints to your Core Set pledge, just add the amounts together and you’re all set! You can also use any outstanding credit in the $150 limited tier towards prints.
To see the full selection of prints, check out the Downward Viral Facebook page or Z. Dev Wiki.

Risks and challenges
Z. is an extremely ambitious multimedia project being made by a number of talented starving students and struggling artists. Many of us don’t have health insurance and most of the team lives in Oakland, which is statistically one of the most dangerous cities in America. But through Z. we’ve all come together and had a lot of fun, grown as professionals, and become a family. So that’s what you’re buying into when you back Z. It’s not just a cool idea, it’s an experience, and one that you’re fully invited to be a part of.
Last year we were able to fund the development of the digital version of Z. thanks to the enthusiasm and generosity of our awesome community. One thing I definitely didn’t expect was the overwhelming demand and excitement for a physical edition of Z. There was a physical reward available, but it was originally only limited to two decks and not really the focus of the campaign. Since then I’ve received many messages, emails, and in-person requests from people who missed out the first time or just discovered Z. recently and want to get their hands on a physical edition.
So we definitely want to give the fans what they want, but since Downward Viral is beyond indie, like so indie it hurts a little, manufacturing more physical copies of the game was just not in the original budget. If we reach our goal of $13,000, we’ll be able to do a larger first run as well as increase the overall card quality for the physical cards.
But the Core Set is really just the beginning of the complete Z. Year One experience, which has continually developed along with the story over the past year, so we now have a number of stretch goals that will help us create and ship all of the additional content. I should also mention that the new Location Decks (expansions) are far more ambitious than the State Park set. They will require us to push the boundaries of our budget and abilities and take everything we’ve learned while making the Core Set to an entirely new level. So while the Core Set is filled from top to bottom with a ton of awesome content, it’s really just the beginning of what you can expect from Z.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
