About this project
"What art offers is space - a certain breathing room for the spirit." ~Updike
For this project, I am asking you to fall down the rabbit hole with me. Just as Alice took an unexpected journey into Wonderland, I am hoping you will travel with me into my world of metal sculpture. The sculptures that I plan to create for the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens (MCBG) are to be a gift to the gardens and the 60,000 plus visitors that come through their doors each year.
The two sculptures will be presented to them along with a book detailing their creation and a story of the sponsorship that it took to bring them to life. Each and every person who pledges to the project will be mentioned and thanked for their contribution.
The MCBG is a very special place here on the northern California coast of Mendocino County. It is one of those sanctuaries where you go to find tranquility and beauty. When you wander the many paths through the gardens, you feel like you have entered a Wonderland of sorts. You have the feeling that you could easily come across the Mad Hatter and his friends having a raucous tea party. You might even hear "Off with her head" through the bushes and turn a corner and see Alice looking cross at her flamingo croquet mallet, hardly noticing the Red Queen turning beet red.
The gardens are a gift to our community and the visiting outside world. I felt it would be nice to give them back some of the beauty they share with us each day. I hope that you will join me in supporting this project so we can present these sculptures as a group to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens.
This project will happen with your support. All you have to do is decide to help, make the pledge and I will take it from there. This project will happen one way or the other but it would be terrific if you were to throw your shoulder to the wheel and give a little push towards the goal! As I said in the video... if you only want to contribute $1 that is fine. I really do mean that. A small pledge still puts your intention towards this being a successful project. Some will contribute more, and the combination of small and big will get us to where we need to be. The more people that play this game the more special it will be when the sculptures are presented. The goal is $5,000 and as a group I am sure we can do it!
By the time the money comes through and the new cutting table is set up, it will be early February. It will take me about a six weeks to make the pieces from start to finish. If we have a rough winter it may take a full two months. A lot of the work I do with patina finishes needs to have decent weather or the chemicals do not work well. This means that the sculptures will be ready to present to the gardens around May 1st. Just in time for the Spring flowers to be in full display.
What do each of us get out of this? That is a great question so lets take a look! Locals to the area will gain some nice sculptures, and the feeling that they supported the lovely MCBG. For people a long ways off, you may want to include a visit in your future travel plans and/or choose a reward that I will hand make for you. You will also be able to feel really good about supporting the arts (a very noble and fine thing to do). For those who know me personally, you know that I have been through a long, hard comeback but I'm back doing what I was meant to do. Let me make you a gift that will remind you to never give up! Finally, what do I get out of it? I get to make metal sculptures for a garden that I love. I also end up with a larger CNC Plasma Cutting Machine that I can use to make future sculptures.
The following are details about the rewards that I am offering. If you have any questions please contact me. I am very accessible via email and can always give you a call back.
$50.00 Level Reward Gift
This is a square glass vase with a side mounted metal panel that is cut with a bold pattern. You can choose from many designs. The bottom is covered in cork to protect your table top. The metal panel has a custom patina (choose from 3 different types). You can view designs and patinas here.
$75 Level Reward Gift
These are extremely cool! They can be used as a vase or as a candle lit luminaria. When you choose this reward you get to choose a pattern, a patina and choose between a glass vase or glass candle insert. They stand 8 inches high and the panels are 4 inches wide. There is cork on the bottom to protect your table top. Click here if you want to see a larger image. A second picture is provided to show you how one looks with flowers (not included).
$100 Level Reward Gift
Here the characters from the sculpture have been modified, reduce down and embellished. They are available as wind chimes or garden stakes (your choice). As wind chimes they are not super noisy (no keeping you up all night I promise). The designs are fun and recognizable by any Alice enthusiast! Choose your favorite character and choose a patina finish
$250 Level Reward Gift
I shot a short video in fast motion showing the CNC Plasma cutter in action. I cut out a sign in the video and take it all the way through applying the patina finish. This is the type of sign that I am offering to make for you for this reward. We can discuss what type of sign you would like and create a design that works for you.
$250.00 & $500.00 Level Reward Gift
This is a really fun reward! You can pick one/two of the characters that I am using in the sculptures and I will make a set for you. The only thing that I will not be able to make for you is the table setting. Below are the drawings to give you an idea of they they will look like.
$750 Level Reward Gift
Below is a picture of a black orchid that I made recently. I never make two identical sculptures so this image is just to give you an idea of what I can make for you. When we discuss your piece we can talk about the type of flower or plant sculpture you would like. We can also discuss size (no larger then two feet), color and finish.
$1,000 Level Reward Gift
This folding screen is a one-of-a-kind. It is a local delivery piece only. It is a semi-dimensional piece. This means that the pieces stick out only a couple of inches. There are a zillion pieces, all hand cut, hand bent and welded. The patina finish is extremely complicated. If you would like to stop by and see the piece before pledging please do. Just send an email and I can arrange a viewing for you. If you click for a larger image you can see some close up shots.
$1,400 Reward Gift
This sculpture piece is title "Unity". It is an outdoor piece made from 1/8 inch steel. It will stand up to the elements without any issues. If you choose a rust patina there will be no maintenance required. If you choose a fancy patina you may need to re-coat the lacquer every so often if you want to avoid rust. There are only 3 of these being made and each one will be a bit different. This item will arrive via UPS Freight or via truck for local delivery. It installs very easily with a hidden track.
Risks and challenges
I feel very confident that this project will come off without any issues. My high skill area is estimation. I plan a project down to the last detail and then carry it out. Since I have done smaller versions of these sculptures as tests, I know that it can be done. It is simply a matter of getting the financing so I can cut the figures bigger.
The only challenge will be to get those rewards to you quickly! I work seven days a week and have projects scheduled back to back through March. If I only have a dozen or so people who pledge large amounts then it will be a snap to get the rewards out very fast. If I have a ton of large pledges, then my challenge will be to get them all done in a timely manner. Never fear... I love to be challenged and will get it all done... FOR SURE!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
