Doundrins Distilling was started in 2018 by three friends: Nick, Abby, and Ryan. Their story starts some years ago while Nick attended the University of Wisconsin. While studying chemical engineering, he also took up an interest in craft beer and worked at a local brewpub. That is where he met Ryan, who also worked at that same brewpub. A friendship was built after many shifts, many drinks, and the sharing of many of their dreams.
Soon after, Nick decided to study abroad. That is where he met, what would one day be his wife, Abby, who was also going to school for chemical engineering. Upon Nick’s return, he introduced Abby and Ryan. Nick graduated, Abby graduated, and they moved to Texas where they both worked as chemical engineers.
Time passed, they got engaged, and soon felt it was better to be closer to family. So they both took jobs in Illinois working in an ethanol plant. During their time there they learned a lot about the beverage distillation process. While in Illinois they got married and had their first child. Then it was time to get even closer to family. Madison seemed like the most logical step as it was right in between both Nick and Abby’s parents. While they worked their way back up north, Ryan had transitioned through several career moves. He moved out of marketing and business management only to return a couple of years later. During this time, he also got married, and he and his wife had a child.
Still having dreams to build their own businesses, Nick, Abby, and Ryan started talking again about those dreams. That is where the flame was sparked to start Doundrins Distilling. The three partners have shared a lot of the same motivations in starting Doundrins from the beginning of their partnership. First and foremost, they all wanted to produce the highest quality craft product. Second, there was a common desire to enhance the community that surrounded them. Finally, they all wanted to build a foundation and legacy for their growing families.
We truly love the place that we live - the Madison, WI area. We will do whatever it takes to get as many of our ingredients locally and from the Midwest as we can. We are a community, and we believe that buying local helps us all, not only by supporting local businesses but by allowing us to deliver the best products to you by using fresh ingredients that have the most flavor.
Speaking of local, we have already partnered with a Madison-area distiller to get our first product, an immature brandy, out to you as soon as possible! We will have this product on the store shelves soon, so you can taste it for yourself.
While our immature brandy production is happening, we are getting our own place in Cottage Grove, WI - on the east side of Madison - and starting the permit application process to be able to distill ourselves. While we wait for our distilling permit, we will be manufacturing bitters at that location. Once we have our permit, we will start producing all our spirits in Cottage Grove, as well as open a tasting room there for our supporters and fans to come try our drinks!
With us being in Wisconsin, of course we plan to make brandy and bitters for your brandy old-fashioned. In addition, we be making other products including honey liqueur, green tea vodka, gin, lemon pepper bitters, and orange bitters as well.
Have you ever tried a Moscow Mule or white Russian using green tea vodka instead of that plain old stuff? Soon you will be able to have this delectable addition right in your cabinet. The honey liqueur recipe we are working on is a dangerous one - great for sipping alone or combining with other spirits like our green tea vodka. Our lemon pepper bitters will help elevate that boring bloody mary, and our orange bitters will take your gin and tonic to new heights.
In order to start making these fine products for you, we must buy barrels, grapes, spices, bottles, labels, equipment, and much more. Your pledge will go directly to buying these essential items for our first brandy and bitters runs. We will do whatever it takes to make the finest product we can. This includes doing our very best to make sure we buy from local suppliers whenever possible.

Risks and challenges
There are many challenges to opening a distillery. In order to open our own facility, we must first find an appropriate location, buy a still, and get permits from the federal, state, and local governments. There will be lots of red tape. There will be lots of discussions with lawyers and officials. We have already started down this path by leasing a space in Cottage Grove, WI and will start the permit application process on 12/1/18. Once we get our permit, we will also need to buy lots of equipment such as stills, barrels, pumps, pipes, and loads of other stuff. We have experience in specifying this equipment in our past jobs, so we are already prepared with plans of what we want to buy.
We have come a long way, but there is still a long way to go. We need your help to get our project up and running. Help us make this dream a reality, and you will soon see our products lining the shelves of your favorite liquor store!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
