MASSIVE CHALICE Update #40 - Teamstream #19 Friday Afternoon!

2 Player Productions is back in the country and we’re ready to show off the game with another Teamstream! We’re going to show the Bloodline Editor (there’s still time for you to get YOUR NAME in MASSIVE CHALICE, go here!), enemy remodels, the Hunter Cadence Armor and a whole lot more!

Teamstream #19

We’ve been making a ton of tweaks to improve the initial experience of MASSIVE CHALICE. The feedback that we got on last month’s build for the Hour of Fun was great and we’ve already implemented plenty of changes to make the game more fun right out of the gate.

Join us for Teamstream #19 TOMORROW at 4PM Pacific (23:00 GMT) on Friday, April 25th! We’ll be playing through the latest build and showing off some new features for Heroes and Enemies alike!

Bloodline Editor

Way back during the Kickstarter we wanted a way for you to get your legacy into MASSIVE CHALICE and that’s what the Bloodline Editor will do! In fact, THERE IS STILL TIME FOR YOU TO GET YOUR NAME INTO EVERY COPY OF MASSIVE CHALICE by becoming a slacker backer here!

We're working with Flash programmer extraordinaire, Jonathan Rodgers (@DarkForestZero) to make this thing happen and he's crushing it! We'll show you our current progress and take some questions about it. We're also planning to create some more symbols to feed into the editor in the next week or two. We're soliciting feedback here, so pitch in your cool ideas for symbols and we’ll see if we can work them into the tool! :D

You can check out a preview of the tool here!

Please keep in mind that this tool is a WORK IN PROGRESS! We’re actively working to improve it and if you have suggestions about its functionality please chime in to the forum thread here!

Enemy Remodels

On the last Teamstream we showed off Derek’s revisions to all of the enemy designs. Geoff has been hard at work over the last couple of weeks implementing these modeling revisions. We'll talk about the process on the stream, but the TLDR version is definitely "SIMPLIFY / CHUNKIFY." :D!

Hunter Cadence Armor

Derek is at it again, this time developing some ideas for the Hunter’s Cadence Armor. For this set we wanted a suit that would enhance the stealthing capabilities of the Hunter. Stealth is becoming really core to the Hunter’s identity. Normally you’ll have to end your stealth move next to a medium or tall blocker in order to camouflage into the environment remain invisible to the enemies. But with this suit of armor you’ll be able to move anywhere you like and maintain stealth.

The Forget Cadence enemies were a great place to look for the visuals of this new armor. Derek used the “Forget Mage” enemy (third from the right up top) as the inspiration for this new armor set. Check it out!

Kickstarter Updates

From now on we're going to be updating the Kickstarter page when we send out updates. We realize that some people want to follow the project only on this site and we want to keep you in the loop! :D

Can’t Join Us Live?

In case you can’t make the live broadcast you can find all our Twitch streams on the Double Fine YouTube channel here. And if there’s anything you want to talk about feel free to come to the MASSIVE CHALICE FORUMS and start a discussion! You can always check out the MASSIVE CHALICE blog for the latest updates from various team members.

See you Friday!

@armored_mammal - did you get that sorted out? We're making the symbols now! :D!

(I tried to PM on the forum, but got a message about a '1 hour waiting period'...)

I signed up for the Double Fine forum just to suggest a couple symbols for the sigil editor and it won't let me reply to any forum threads. Also, count me as another person concerned about not getting updates via email or Kickstarter.

Really? I feel it was just as bad with Double Fine Adventure's Kickstarter, I still remember randomly browsing some gaming news sites and seeing an article about the naming of the project to "Broken Age" - as voted on by it's backers (apparently..?), then coming here to its kickstarter page comments to see a bunch of us folk just as dumbfounded as I was, only to recieve an official KS udpdate several days to a week later telling us that "Oh yeah, there was totally a poll and voting going on over at our site, didn't you get the Memo... that we didn't even send out? Trolololol" -_-

It's for that reason and the facepalming and telling them *there and then* that they really needed work on their communication skills that it's so baffling and eye rollingly bizarre that they've apparently done the same thing here with their second project up until now.
Meanwhile I know what's going on with and pretty much up to date with everything else I've backed who have taken the effort to keep us informed /shrug

Although I'm glad the page here will start being updated, I am disappointed that updates were made (virtually) everywhere *except* the Kickstarter page.

How was this oversight possible considering this was not the case with Broken Age?

Double Fine, I think you guys are awesome, but this was a big mistake. You owe us a desktop wallpaper.

      Hi Everyone!

In my original post I somehow didn't get the link in for the actual Bloodline Editor! Whoops... (I blame not having enough coffee).

Here is the link for you to play with the Editor!

Check it out and let us know what you think!

When I read, "There is still time to get your name into every game," I though I missed an update where it was announced we could start sending in our submissions. I've received a number of the emails, but it's been really difficult to follow this game like I do my other Kickstarter projects. I have to say, in my opinion, the communication regarding this game has felt akin to 'if you want updates and information, work to get them.' Maybe that's not necessarily the case, but it's definitely what it feels like.

Of course, there are those here who are deriding those who haven't been able to keep up to date on this project. Remember, not everyone has the same experiences, opinions, and reactions that you do. It's fairly easy to blame people as being 'stupid' for not keeping up, but if this many people are stating that they had no idea, then it's likely that there was some miscommunication.

Thanks to the forums and the twitch streams, I feel I know more about this game than any other kickstarter projects I've backed so far, including Broken Age.

Keep up the great work, MC Team. Look forward to the next team streams.

I am sorry that you Stephen or any others that have not been following the updates on this game. I have enjoyed their team streams immensely. I have backed a lot of projects and this has been by far the most fun I have had following a games creation. It has been wonderful to see some of the process that gets done during a games development.

I wish all the games I have backed to have been like this. If you or anyone else has not seen their twitch streams I highly recommend watching them. If they ever do another kickstarter I definitely will back them again.

      that sounds great!

I'm well aware of how Kickstarter operates Kevin thank you very much. I've also been around the block enough to know that radio silence and lack of regular updates can cause ill-will and backers to turn on creator's due to lack of faith (See Republique's lack of PC news and the boiling point of the comments section recently)
I'm also re-reading update 26 (the one prior to this one, there's nothing wrong with my email settings) Didn't see where they said they would stop using this system that functions perfectly fine and *exclusively* be doing updates via that email address, figured it was an optional "as well as" sort of deal since I know there are some folk out there who actually don't like and block messages from Kickstarter itself. Guess that was a misunderstanding.

Not sure why you are all arguing anyway, this very update is great news and is exactly a step in the proper direction. I'm glad and happy that I might actually be kept in the loop with the development of this one. As for your question, being that this is the first non-concept only art I've seen, sure; it looks alright. Those images of the hunter give it a Broken Age style artwork vibe indeed.

    12. Stephen "Stoibs" D
      on April 24, 2014

Funny that the overwhelming comments from that update were people saying they weren't actually getting updated. -_-
Still can't fathom any decision to not use Kickstarter's inbuilt update system... I mean that's *literally* what it's there for... just mindboggling why you would arbitrarily choose to not use a system that automatically sends an email out to each and every single backer here, for some other apparent non functioning system (that a chunk of us aren't even subscribed to).
I see no reason or Logic. Just makes people like me think that this is dead too with no updates for months at a time.

If they could go ahead and retroactively push out those '13 updates' here that would be swell.

    13. Double Fine and 2 Player Productions 2-time creator on April 24, 2014

      Hi Everyone!

As some of you have noted, we didn't give any updates via Kickstarter for a long time. The irony is we have been posting almost weekly on our blogs, via email, on our forums , on Twitch and on YouTube. Although we did send out two Kickstarter updates last September where we made sure to let everyone know that further updates would be coming from Double Fine directly, we saw that a lot of you wanted your updates here so we're back! Thanks for voicing your opinions and concerns and for supporting MASSIVE CHALICE and Double Fine as a whole.

In case you missed them ALL OF THE UPDATES can be found on the MASSIVE CHALICE forums which are open to the public! Check them out here:

Double Fine's YouTube channel is where you'll find all our MASSIVE CHALICE Teamstreams:

Double Fine's Twitch channel is where we broadcast MASSIVE CHALICE Teamstreams live:

The MASSIVE CHALICE blog is great for quick mini updates on the state of the game:

Of course you can find MASSIVE CHALICE on Facebook as well as on Twitter (by following @DoubleFine).

Please keep the suggestions coming and as always thank you so much for your support!

@Stephen I have been receiving updates all this time via email, quite regularly, and they have met my desired level of information. Perhaps your settings or personal contact info was not set correctly? As for the rest of your commentary and tone: complex realities do not always denote underhanded scams being fomented against you, the all-entitled backer. You are not promised or guaranteed anything 100% by backing a project -- it's not a Pre-Order button with extra griping privileges. Given that crowd-funding is entirely new ground, I feel Double Fine has done a doubly fine job with updates -- they've been making full documentaries that are heads above in production value and insight. Keep it clear: you are funding a creation -- you are not creating. If you are concerned about scams, perhaps backing 164 projects within such a framework is not a wise decision.

Massive Chalice looks like it is coming along quite nicely. What do you think of the artwork and early concepts? Does what they have shown so far excite you at all?

    15. Marc Aranha on April 24, 2014

@Stephen: I count 13 updates via their mailing list (instead of KS updates), beginning last September. They noted they were going to do that in KS Update 26, so hardly a surprise. Most of their team streams have been archived on Twitch.

    16. Jess Montgomery on April 24, 2014

Happy happy joy joy. More updates the better thanks and keep up the good work.

"From now on we're going to be updating the Kickstarter page when we send out updates."

Wait - you mean all this time there actually *has* been updates and news for this project..?!
I was really - *genuinely* - starting to think this was just an underhanded cash grab to off-set some of the financial pressures and losses that Broken Age suffered and that Massive chalice was actually dead in the water since the last of anything we've heard from this was its latest update in *August* last year...

Jesus Christ.. I thought you guys would have learned to actually keep your backers in the loop after the whole naming of the game fiasco for Double fine Adventure - (whereby most of us where completely taken by surprised that it was even being voted on, not to mention god-knows what else was decided upon and not made aware of by a good chunk of us.)

Ok.. well.. that's something atleast, that's one Kickstarter here that I can move back into the 'might be legit' column out from the 'What a scam' pile..
Of my 164 backed projects both of these Double fine ones have been some of the worst run ones for keeping backers in the Loop and conveying info/progress I must say :S

    18. Eddy on April 24, 2014

so, when can we get the documentaries like broken age? I backed at that level almost exclusively for the doc, with broken age I had mostly an episode a month so I could be on par with the game, I think team streams are long and full of details I don't really care to watch while the docs were very entertaining.
