An Era of Mass Fashion.
It's a moment we're all sadly familiar with. You're on the subway, at the office, at a bar – and you're wearing the same shirt as someone else. It's not on the label, but there are thousands of your shirt out there. Year after year, mass retailers make large quantities of good-enough menswear with only slight variations in fabric and design.
At .Bk, every limited edition shirt comes with a handwritten print number, e.g. 57/100. Every month, we release a new collection of unique pieces that are never repeated. By working in quick turnarounds and small quantities, we're able to experiment with bold ideas that aren't for everyone. After all, there's nothing better than getting a shirt that was meant for you.
Update: We reached our goal!
Thanks to the incredible support we received from our unique community, we reached our goal just over halfway into our three-week campaign. Due to popular demand for more flecked herringbone, we're releasing two new colors: Indigo & Ivory.
Launch Collection: The Start-Up CEO.
Ten premium button-down shirts at a run of 100 each. The designs will never be repeated. As a menswear start-up, we know that transforming your ideas into reality takes a certain kind of person. We took inspiration from the style and aura of those determined individuals that coded, pitched & invented their ways into success.
We asked Steven van Wel, CEO of Karma, to model the collection for our first collection's lookbook. Karma is a company that puts a social twist on mobile WiFi hotspots. We photographed the lookbook in the start-up coworking space at the Fueled Collective in SoHo, NYC.

My father has supplied high-quality fashion to American department stores since 1979. Over the past 30 years, the consolidation of the retail industry led to the wholesale industry's utter collapse. Our company survived by adapting. We were able to carve a niche in fast fashion with flexible, high-quality sourcing at an extremely fast turnaround time. However, the wholesale industry gets more difficult every day. My father and I agreed; the future for our small, family company is in online retail.
We created .Bk as an independent brand for the digital age. It's not about retail buyers anymore; it's about connecting directly to our customers and forming a small, dedicated community around our brand. If this works, it could serve as a model for other family-owned wholesalers and independent designers to bring their ideas to life -- a microbrand movement.
Unlike a lot of other apparel start-ups, we actually come from the fashion world. Using our relationships with existing suppliers, we convinced a group of small, ethical & high-quality fabric mills and sewing houses to produce clothing in extremely limited quantities, something that no other brand could or would even want to do.
This isn't just about raising enough money to make the shirts; it's also about a new beginning. In order to really get started, we need a small community of backers that believes in us and the potential of this company. We can cover half of the start-up costs: enough to buy and cut the fabric. But, in order to sew our shirts and get started on the next collection, we need your support. Together, we can make .Bk a reality.
Risks and challenges
Before launching this Kickstarter, I spent a year personally sourcing every step of the production process from the best fabric mills, sewing houses and laundries in China & India. At this point, I've arranged production space in small, artisan factories near Shanghai. Contracts, customs, logistics & warehousing are all ready to go. Once funded, we'll start sewing immediately.
With 35 years of experience in fast fashion, we're able to turnaround high-quality apparel in less than a month. Even so, there is one cardinal rule in fashion production; prepare for the unexpected. As a cushion, our deliveries are guaranteed by April 15, but we intend to ship by the end of March.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
