The Dormouse Theatre is a 200 seat venue that will produce its own unique brand of sketch comedy, as well as original, and non-traditional works. In addition, The Dormouse will host and feature live music, and an array of other performance artists throughout the season.
The setting is relaxed with eclectic seating options. Patrons will be able to chill before and after a show, while enjoying a locally crafted beverage and house made snack from our rotating menu.
The Dormouse is located on the Portage St. corridor near the Kalamazoo Farmers Market and neighborhood hub Washington Square. This area is experiencing a renaissance. The Dormouse is one of the first businesses to come in and take on the risk and responsibility of helping to revitalize this underdeveloped artery that leads into Kalamazoo's vibrant and expanding downtown. Many investors already have their stake in this area. This is especially relevant because the The Dormouse is locally and independently owned by residents of the neighborhood in which it resides.
Whats more, The Dormouse is a beautiful hundred year old former church building. However, it needs some substantial upgrades before it is able to open its' doors to the general public again. The renovations can be broken down into four major categories.
- Restroom Additions - there are currently none on the main floor. $45,000
- Accessibility - including ramps, railings, entryway landing, steps. $37,000
- Fire suppression system - including water supply upgrade. $58,000
- Lights and Sound - a state of the art system with room to grow. $28,000
We are trying to raise at least $10,000 to help offset these costs, with a stretch goal of $20,000. Why a stretch goal? Well, the majority of our funding is coming from loans, so simply the more we can offset that number, and the interest that comes with it, the better! If we reach our stretch goal, then we will give bonus tickets to everyone who donates twenty five bucks or more.
At its core, The Dormouse represents absurdist and experimental comedy, subversive artistic expression, and inclusion. Free speech and self expression are crucial elements in growing communities, and countries for that matter, with a social conscience. Frankly, we're here to help avoid the the ticky tacky of landscapes devoid of personality and compassion!
Risks and challenges
The Dormouse concept and project certainly didn't happen overnight. It's quite a large undertaking and we've been working on it for the past three years. We've overcome many roadblocks and challenges along the way. Although there are all the typical risks associated with any new start-up, the time has allowed us to carefully plan, hone our craft, and develop a following. This, along with our collective experience in business, management, and the entertainment industry, will definitely help mitigate any hiccups in operations. Our immediate hurdle going forward will be the timely scheduling of contractors, especially regarding the road work that will need to be done to accommodate the new water line for fire suppression.
Currently, the project is being funded through a loan and grants. Kickstarter is the last few gallons of gas that we need so we don't just sputter across the finish line, but start the next lap of our journey strong!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
