Bottled Feelings - A Collaborative Art Exhibit
Muted thoughts and feelings brought to life by the art of lettering.
What is the core idea behind the exhibit?
Bottled Feelings - The Exhibition is a free collaborative and interactive exhibition intended to allow anonymous people to submit feelings they have only felt inside but have never spoke about.
Everyday there are conversations we have with ourselves only in our mind. There are moments we don't say how we feel due to lack of courage, to avoid conflict, because of fear, because the time is not right, every person has had that feeling that they've bottled up. This exhibit explores those feelings and expresses them with the art of hand lettering.
These happy, heartbreaking, shameful, proud, sad, angry, lonely, tired moments are the feelings I want to hear and validate your feelings by turning those thoughts that were only in your mind to a experience for others to relate to. It's changing what was only known to you in your mind into something tangible and real into the world. My part is to create conversations about our insecurities, being an artist, love & relationships, parenting, self-esteem, imposter syndrome, loneliness and so much more. The hope is for you the viewer to read and relate to the bottled feeling of another then have the comfort of knowing that you are not alone with your bottled feelings.

Who am I? Hello, I'm Doris....the artist? (Question mark intended.)
In 2014, I started my company Love Lettering, a small business that focuses on the beauty of hand lettering and typography and what happens when you combine beautiful things, meaningful words and the art of lettering.
With no safety net, no back up plan, I just went for it, dived right into starting creating a service focused on drawing letters. Sometimes when I say that out loud it even sounds a bit ridiculous to me, but here we are 5 years later.
My educational background is in the arts, I am an illustration graduate from OCADU when it was still just OCAD but what I really loved drawing was letters. I found out at a young age that different fonts and typefaces could exude different feelings and that was extremely interesting. Alongside the knowledge of various mediums I was able to navigate how to letter on all different types of surfaces, seeing the world and all its objects as canvases for my hand lettering. This ability to transform any object and surface into hand lettered art landed me a publishing deal and my book Extraordinary Hand Lettering was released in November 2017.
In my heart for many many years, there was a silent calling, a bottled feeling that "I am meant to do more...". This feeling was released when I started Love Lettering, I thought that that was the MORE I was looking for, and now recently I had that feeling again... that I am meant to do more... and that is what started this new chapter.
The why of this exhibit....
I have been blessed to work with so many people and companies on their logos, branding, events signage and special moments and with every commission I used my skill and knowledge and passion of what I know to create something unique just for them. My vision of what my lettering could be as a service has been fulfilled and I am so grateful for everyone that supported my journey so far but now with the feeling of "I'm meant to do more" I cannot deny the visions of what I can see and feel in my heart of my hand lettering becoming an exhibit/installation, and I, transitioning into an artist role that I have not been able to own thus far, I have always been an artist for others, and not myself. I have always been artistic, but is it the artist I want to be?
What will be created?
1. Two week gallery exhibition in Toronto in Sept/October 2019 - Admission FREE
On display, 50+ Hand lettered bottled feelings.
To create this exhibit there are so many expenses involved behind the scenes in studio besides the time and materials required. There will be displays and gallery rental, printed materials for the show and a small team that will help me assemble the exhibit and coordination/planning for opening night that will include a cocktail party for the reward level pledges. The best thing that can happen for the show is for it to create conversations between people about our mental thoughts and evoke feelings from the viewer. My dream is for this to become a travelling exhibit or a permanent exhibit. Currently there are no plans to sell the bottles after the exhibit.
2. Exhibit Rewards
Bottled Feelings Enamel Pin
Limited Edition Signed & Numbered Print
Bottled Feelings Journal
Opening Night Ceremony will be an advanced opening cocktail party for influencers, media, and special guests as well as the backers that pledged for that reward level.
Any money raised beyond the initial goal ($15000), will go directly to making the exhibit larger and creating extra bottles/submissions of bottled feelings, the goal is to have 50 on display however I can see many more than that if possible. The gallery and display options will also be improved with the extra funding. The possibility of having an extended show for FREE admission is possible too so that more people can enjoy the exhibit. The rewards will also be improved, including quality papers, screen printing vs digital printing, creative journal cover designs, and more. Love is in the details and having the option to choose would be amazing.
**Update/Idea - July 18, 2019***
I have been receiving bottled feelings on my online submission form since launch day July 15, the stories behind the feelings are really compelling, stories that I want heard too... an idea I have and hope to implement now are QR scan codes that allow the viewer to read the story behind the bottled feeling, telling the story of the feeling itself. Currently I have no experience dealing with such technology but I hope I can have this be a part of the exhibit if we reach our goal.
Risks and challenges
My Risks & Challenges...
-The challenge will be sorting out and reading the bottled feelings of others and choosing which ones to letter. These anonymous feelings will be chosen based on wording, relatability for viewer, and overall lettering & design possibility.
-I am really confident in the execution and design of the bottles, and creating a great exhibition, however since this is my first time creating an exhibit, I am sure there will be hiccups along the way.
-Maintaining a good timeline and budget to execute my vision, with this project I would have to dedicate a specific amount of hours per day to ensure completion, this would take studio time away from my clients as well as Mom time from my daughter. However this exhibit is something worth pursuing.
-Is it odd to find the hardest challenge to reach the KickStarter goal?
-In the end the most challenging thing for me is to make the transition from a hand lettering service, to hand lettering artist. To try something new, to get outside my comfort zone, the challenge is really to challenge myself, but with your support I know we can create something beautiful and engaging for the world to see.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
