Drakerys is a fantasy world where Dwarves, Elves, Orcs and Humans reign over ancient kingdoms. Elemental magic created the world and went into slumber for centuries, leaving myths about dreadful and marvelous creatures ruling over the living. Everybody knows fairies and trolls are just stuff of legends, right? Wrong! A few weeks ago, an adventurer awoke a powerful dragon and triggered a chain of events leading to the destruction of an empire. Magic is returning in a world shaken by sudden chaos. Armies are assembling to repel the awakening creatures and seize power!
In Drakerys, each player chooses a side, gathers miniature troops and takes the lead against other players in story-driven skirmish battles. The terrain setting as well as the victory conditions are laid out by a battle scenario all players agreed upon. The fate of warriors is determined through combat rules and some rolls of dice. As a war leader, you’ll need tactical insight - and a bit of luck - to win!
The Starter Box contains everything you'll need to discover miniature games and enjoy Drakerys. Two armies are featured with fully assembled miniatures: the Human Paladins of Irosia and the wild Orcs of Ashral.
As the story begins, they are pitted against each other in a campaign to conquer a mysterious archipelago filled with danger, secrets about the magical events to come, not to mention countless treasures! The winning side will take an important advantage in the beginning war.
The old world is about to crumble. It’s a time of heroes. Will you be the king of tomorrow? Find out with Drakerys!
- Drakerys uses the 32mm scale. Miniatures are made of hard plastic and come unpainted.
- Miniatures coming with the Starter Box are assembled.
- Miniatures coming with all other boxes (Army Boxes, Unit Boxes and Solo Boxes) come unassembled. They can be assembled in various configurations as detailed later.
Miniatures coming in the Army Boxes offer various weapon combinations depending on how you assemble them. Even the hero can be customized! Choose your army, join the battle and get a free add-on of your choosing (up to $20)!
The Conqueror pledge level features the Starter Set and reinforcements with four additional Unit Boxes (miniatures to assemble). Get Lorn and Valira in exclusive Kickstarter versions!
Yes, you read that right: the Elemental 5 pledge level is basically an Explorer pledge level, plus Valira (KS exclusive version) and one free copy of every available add-on (even Army Boxes and sceneries!). The more of them are unlocked, the better the Elemental 5 pledge level gets!
Drakerys rules were created to be
easily understood by new players, who will discover some game
mechanics used in many fantasy games. As such, it is a perfect
introduction to the genre. The Starter and Army Boxes use a double-sided playing battleground and a campaign to train your troops to battle in an elemental world. Your first victories will lead you to conquer the mysterious Valgar Archipelago!
Download here the PDF version of the Quickstart Rules.
Along with these core mechanics, original new features make it exciting to play while still being easily understood. Let's explore a few of Drakery's killer features!
Hard plastic miniatures featured in the Starter Box come already assembled. In other boxes, however, miniatures can be assembled in various configurations to suit your gaming need and painter taste. Here is an example:
Through Escape, Mohamed Ait-Mehdi's previous game and Kickstarter campaign, an immense amount of experience was gained on developing the highest quality plastic miniatures. With this experience, we aim to achieve an even better quality of design and production. Our innovative method of assembly allows even the least skilled gamers to have plenty of options to customize the game to suit your play.
In Drakerys, battle units use Action Points (APs) to perform various feats, like moving, charging, attacking or casting spells. The more spectacular a feat is, the more AP it requires. Each time a player uses an AP, he advances his army token one space on the Time Path, and the active player is always the one whose army token is last on the wheel. Using this, a daring player could order one of his unit to perform a truly amazing feat, using 3 APs in the process. Then it would be the other player's turn to play, having up to 3 APs to spend in any way he wants until his opponent plays again. He would activate three units with basic feats, for example, possibly gaining a tactical advantage by making his army march on precious elemental sources. Once you play with the Time Path, any turn-based or alternative activation-based game seems, well, as old as the toy soldiers grandpa used to own.
In Drakerys, players use dice rolls to solve all random situations. Will your soldiers hit and kill their foes? Will your magician successfully cast his elemental spell? All rolls use ten-sided dice (D10) and a simple, single table for resolution. All you have to do is subtract the defender’s game value from the attacker's game value and read the matching column. The indicated number gives the result needed on the die to achieve a success. In Drakerys, the action is on the table, not in the rules!
In many games, elementals beings are second-hand players, magical beasts summoned by wizards and thrown against the enemy without any second thought. In Drakerys, elemental forces are a central part of the dynamics of the game, and they play key roles in the universe, having their own personalities and schemes.
Their presence on the battlefield has a determining effect over the game. As beacons of primal magic, they naturally influence spells cast by a nearby magician. Throwing a fireball is just easier and deadlier when you have the support of a fire elemental ally. Imagine what a magician could do by befriending several of them! On the other hand, they can also have an influence over troops nearby. Being in the magical aura of an Earth elemental grants some form of resistance. These game effects of elemental support give elemental miniatures a key role in deployment and tactics all over the game.
Of course, despite being strategic allies of choice, elemental still wield powers to be afraid of, and can be called upon as war machines to press the assault in a more direct and extravagant way.
Elemental beings are not the sole manifestation of Drakerys’ reawakening energies. The game features elemental springs called vortexes, places of power where magical energies flow in a wild way.
In Drakerys, magicians have a special link to magic and produce the mana, which is the energy they need to independently fuel their spells. Being around a vortex, however, allows any magician to draw in the magical flow to multiply their mana resources. The more mana a magician has, the more often he can cast his spells. Any vortex can get depleted if drawn too much, of course, but magic is eternal. A depleted vortex eventually comes back to life like Drakerys’ magic itself.
So, because of these great advantages, Drakerys’ champions seek elemental powers to boost themselves and their troops on the way to victory. Magicians, once considered useless on the battlefield, are again courted as they achieve godlike powers when surrounded with elementals beings and vortexes.
All good stories have heroes and villains, and Drakerys is no exception to the rule. In this world, however, heroes and villains just discovered their extraordinary abilities. They were ordinary people mere weeks ago, but since then have been gifted with elemental powers by the land during the event that renewed the world's magic. These individuals are said to be Awakened and get thrown into battle, even though most of them haven't realized their full and true potential yet...
Some of the Awakened belong to an army, such as Karya of the Irosian Empire and Induna of the Ashral Orcs. They are loyal to their nation and lead their people into the coming wars. The others, such as Lorn and Valira, are mercenaries who can join any army they wish. Used properly, their unique strengths could turn the tide of a battle!
Karya was born on a day of a major victory for Emperor Alexander of Irosia, and was raised hearing his deeds of glory along three elder brothers. As adulthood came, she declined family life and soon engaged in the imperial army to get a name of her own. A few years were enough for her to become an officer and lead her own men. News from the Valgar Islands just struck her ears. The time has come for her to become a heroine!
Induna used to be a great counselor to the Ashral King, until court intrigues led him to disgrace. He was however the first shaman to foresee what would happen, and felt his power amplify greatly as the Valgar Islands rose from the ocean. He is now leading a small Orc force to this dreaded places, seeking answers and glory once more now he has felt the blessing of elemental spirits.
(...) Each species gave birth to several cultures, usually with a similar goal, to create a ruling civilization. Empires rose and empires faded away. Every once in a while, an adventurer found the shelter of ancient creatures born of the Maelstrom. Only on rare occasions were the weakest ones among those defeated. But now, things have changed. A few months ago, Lorn, a famous adventurer, raided the den of a creature far too strong for him. Athora, a mighty dragon, awoke from slumber. the great beast rose to the skies and set the old Xao kingdom ablaze, like beacon heralding the return of magic on Drakerys. Since that fateful event, the world is changing. Maelstrom creatures are emerging along elemental beings, spreading destruction in their wake. Armies assemble to build their lords' power, clash with monsters and wreak vengeance for past grudges. (...)

Elemental vortexes play a major role in every Drakerys game. They are battle objectives and power outlets for Awakened heroes, especially magicians. Don't let them be tokens, use these highly detailed plastic sceneries instead!
Drakerys sceneries are made of hard plastic and can be used in any 28-32mm game.
Don't Panic Games is a fresh and innovative international game publisher (with a mainly french team) dedicated to creating high quality boardgames in rich universes conceived with many upcoming developments. While Drakerys is our first project, we aim to develop cultures of the imaginary as a whole, and not only in the tabletop world. To achieve this goals, we gathered seasoned actors of the publishing and gaming industries. However, we will remain before anything a team of gamers developing products for gamers.
Mohamed Ait-Mehdi, aka Mohand, initiator of the Drakerys project, has been a sculptor and a painter since 2005. First hired at Rackham Entertainment, he then worked as a freelancer for Mantic, Privateer Press and other miniature game companies. In 2009, Mohamed starts Eden, a post-apocalyptic miniature game. In early 2013, his first attempt on Kickstarter met with great success with Escape, a boardgame set in the Eden universe.
Pierre Joanne is Drakerys' game designer. He's already the joyful developer of a post-apocalyptic child: Eden (Taban Miniatures), a game he has been developping during years. A boardgames afficionado, Pierre wants to merge the specific gameplay of eurogames with the tactical potential of the best miniature games.
Nicolas Raoult is a freelance author and game designer. After a ten years experience with Rackham Entertainment, working on products such as Confrontation & AT-43, his latest works include videogames, IP design and recently Zombicide, the boardgame (Guillotine Games).
Cedric Littardi is a French entrepreneur and pioneer of the geek sub-culture related industries. He brought Japanese anime in France, founded Animeland magazine and the Kaze label. A player of every kind of game, he has been a journalist, a publisher and a Producer. He recently founded the central parisian hot spot for geek and gaming communities, the "Dernier Bar avant la Fin du Monde" (The Bar at the End of the Universe) in central Paris.
Alicia Marie Boisbelaud lives in Ohio. She already worked with Taban Miniatures on the Escape boardgame project as a proofreader and voice actor. You can hear her in Drakerys' main videos, and read her writings in the punchiest lines of this very page. Alicia is also the proud mother of three and a gamer's wife. She brings a fresh and feminine point of view to our works!
John Prat is an american RPG and boardgame player living in California. As Cedric's childhood friend with which they played RPGs and boardgames for years, he decided to join the project several months ago and will help with all the translations, adaptations and international testing - we told you we were an international team. Having a perfectly bilingual member is a clear key to the quality of the game and he was very welcome in the team.
Risks and challenges
Drakerys is Don't Panic Games' first project. To achieve this goal, we gathered seasoned actors of the publishing and gaming industry, limiting the risks. All of them have already published games, or had their own games published (Eden, Escape, Confrontation, AT-43, Zombicide...).
All products will be produced in Asia (mostly China). Several risks lies in the production, shipping and custom delays. We believe that we have forecast enough time and are sufficiently advanced for this, but others have miscalculated before us, so we prefer to be cautious in warning about it.
Pledges would be refunded in the extremely unlikely case the game can’t be delivered at all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
