Paperhand Puppet Intervention returns for their 20th annual puppet pageant of unlikely proportions. Mask and dance, shadow puppetry and stilt walking unite as cardboard comes to life and paper-mache’ flies to the music of the band.
This year’s show, We Are Here explores the paradoxical gift of PROGRESS. We Are Here to learn, to practice, and to heal, to dream and build a better world together; to Create this work and rise as a community; to Inspire us all to feel more deeply connected to the earth and it's creatures; to stand up for justice, stand for our Planet, and work for peace. We Are Here to Celebrate 20 years of Paperhand’s Puppetry Art, Storytelling, and Magic. We Are Here to make an original Giant puppet pageant, with masks, stilts, shadows and live music, and to Give Thanks for it all.
Our shows have become a tradition for thousands across the Triangle and Triad and we hope you help to nurture connection within our communities and the Earth itself. We try to present an alternative to the discouraging news of the day while striving to make our world a better place for all. We can't do it without you! Please consider granting us the means to continue our work. Thank you!
The support we receive from crowdfunding has become an invaluable resource that brings our shows to life each year. Your donation helps us cover the cost of: rent, renting the performance space, paying a stipend to our hard working interns, musicians, and puppeteers, and collecting the basic materials like cloth, wood and pvc needed to build the puppets for the show. While helping us maintain our policy to never turn away an audience member for lack of funds for all of our shows at the Forest Theatre. Our past successful Kickstarter campaigns have allowed us to continue to grow the work that we do in ways we didn’t know were possible. Thanks for that!
In the past eight years this is what your donations have helped us create:
In the Heart of the Fire (2018) - 305 donors helped us raise $20,561
Of Wings and Feet (2017)- 298 donors helped us raise $19,041
The Beautiful Beast (2016)- 187 donors helped us raise $11,823
A Drop in the Bucket (2015)- 176 donors helped us raise $12,806
The Painted Bird (2014)- 172 backers pledged $11,298
Invisible Earth (2013)- 161 backers pledged $8,373
City of Frogs (2012)- 127 backers pledged $7,455
The Serpent’s Egg (2011)- 91 backers pledged $7,703
Now let's keep going! This year we need to extend our reach, share our story and mission with more people, the environment needs us! Your contribution will support Paperhand's mission to use diverse styles of puppetry and artistic expression to create works that inspire, promote social change, and make structural upgrades that are long overdue in order to keep this work going. Simply put, we can’t do it without your help!

In 1998 Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s directors Donovan Zimmerman and Jan Burger met and began a collaboration of epic proportions. Since then, 20 years ago, they have been using papier-mâché, cardboard, bamboo, your old house paints, cloth, and other assorted junk (treasure to us!) to create incredible giant puppets, masks, shadow plays and spectacle performances for all ages.
Paperhand Puppet Intervention's mission is to use this puppetry, performance and creativity to undermine and eradicate greed, hate, fear to promote justice, equality and peace. We are comprised of artists and volunteers who share their energy, creativity, sweat, smarts, strength, support and hold a belief in our vision and further our mission.
Community is the lifeblood of Paperhand. It makes our creations, our performances and Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s existence possible. We appreciate your donations small or large and thank you greatly for your support! Please also support our project by helping us spread the word about the campaign and our upcoming performances!

Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge with past campaigns has been ensuring that all our supporters get their rewards. We have offered the option of receiving rewards in the mail or picking them up at the door which has caused some confusion and miscommunication in the past that has resulted in some donors falling through the cracks. The past two years we've found increased success by mailing out ALL of the rewards and hope to continue improving the system until we get rewards to 100% of donors. You can help us reach this goal! In July we will send out your reward survey asking for your delivery information. Please take the time to fill that out so we can make sure every supporter gets their rewards!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
