About this project
Paperhand Puppet Intervention returns for their seventeenth annual enormous pageant of the extraordinary and everyday complete with giant puppets, masks, shadow puppets, stilt dancing, animated cardboard, and dynamic live music. This year’s show, The Beautiful Beast, will take a look at the monsters and beasts that inhabit our dreams and folktales, it will peer through different lenses to explore the beauty, monstrousness and magic of these creatures. Paperhand’s annual spectacle tells stories of the human heart, illuminates myths from around the world, inspires young and old alike through their unique brand of creative expression, and helps create a community that shares not only their picnic blankets, but also their ideas and experiences.
Crowdfunding has become an invaluable resource that brings our shows to life. Your donation helps us cover the cost of renting the performance space, paying a stipend to our hard working interns, and supplying the basic materials needed to build the puppets for the show. Our past successful Kickstarter campaigns have allowed us to continue to grow the work that we do in ways we didn’t know were possible. Last year we had record audiences with over 16,000 people coming to see the show! This year we are adding a weekend of performances in Greensboro and exploring new ways to grow in our art. In the past five years this is what your donations have helped us create:
A Drop in the Bucket (2015)- 176 donors helped us raise $12,806
The Painted Bird (2014)- 172 backers pledged $11,298
Invisible Earth (2013)- 161 backers pledged $8,373
City of Frogs (2012)- 127 backers pledged $7,455
The Serpent’s Egg (2011)- 91 backers pledged $7,703
Simply put, we can’t do it without your help!

Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s mission is to use diverse styles of puppetry and artistic expression to create works that inspire, promote social change and are deeply rewarding for all involved. These styles include: giant puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppetry, masks, stilt dancing and anything under the sky that strikes our fancy. We will also synthesize many art forms including, but never limited to, sculpting, painting, dance, music, improvisation, costume design, set design and theater. We will use this puppetry, performance and creativity to undermine and eradicate greed, hate and fear and promote justice, equality and peace. We are comprised of artists and volunteers who share their energy, creativity, sweat, smarts, strength, support and hold a belief in our vision and promote our mission. Community is the lifeblood of Paperhand. It makes our creations, our performances and Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s existence possible. We appreciate your donations small or large and thank you greatly for your support! Please also support our project by helping us spread the word about the campaign and our upcoming performances!

Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge with past campaigns has been ensuring that all our supporters get their rewards. We have offered the option of receiving rewards in the mail or picking them up at the door which has caused some confusion and miscommunication in the past that has resulted in some donors falling through the cracks. Last year we found increased success by mailing out ALL of the rewards and hope to continue improving the system until we get rewards to 100% of donors. You can help us reach this goal! In July we will send out your reward survey asking for your delivery information. Please take the time to fill that out so we can make sure every supporter gets their rewards!
Pulling together any artistic endeavor often feels like a thing of magic - we find ourselves pushed against production deadlines, spacial limitations, and acts of nature. Somehow everything comes together in the right moment to produce a creation we are ultimately proud of and grateful to be able to share with our community.
Due the beautiful outdoor setting of our performance space, we've experienced rained-out performances and loss of power. But we're lucky that our audience understands that element of the unknown, and we are happy to accommodate their needs with tickets to a later show, or to make it up to them in another way.
Part of what makes our crowd-funding campaigns an essential element to our production means is that it fosters less reliance upon ticket revenue to keep our company going. Not only does that mean we can weather a thunderstorm, but we can ensure that audiences of all socioeconomic backgrounds have access to our performances.
You'll notice that all shows at the Forest Theatre are pay-what-you-can with a suggested donation for entry. No one is turned away because they cannot pay. This reflects a core value of Paperhand: to inspire people and promote social change to eradicate institutions of greed, hate, and fear. Making art accessible to those who are restricted by financial burdens, is a direct action toward subverting systems of oppression. By supporting us upfront, you are participants in that activism!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
