About this project

Mix homebrewing with dwarves, ancient god-like aliens, and modern science fiction and you have Satyr Stein. Centuries of brewers have perfected the art of the fermented beverage and I am eager to share it with you in a special way – a way that puts all of our passions in one pot and adds a bit of magic. Homebrewing feeds both the creative and intellectual needs like a good hobby should. By crossing beer with tales from both the future and the past, Satyr Stein allows us to explore worlds, both real and imaginary, through our taste buds. Pledge now to make it so.

Goals & Stretch Goals

Free Downloads

Dwarven Stout Recipes: Sample Pages - see our layout as it currently stands and sample three awesome recipes.

Dwarven Maple Stout Beer Labels - download and print on beer label paper

Random Recipe Generator - grab your polyhedral dice and prepare to encounter about chaos.  There are over 100 million brewing possibilities on these charts.

Where is the money going?

What you do not see in our budget is my time writing or brewing. That is just my part of the project and I am having a blast doing it. We already have the camera equipment and of course, all of the brewing supplies. Therefore, this is all that is left:

I am really hoping we raise enough money to print the book and ship it to you. This is where the stretch goal comes in. Once we hit that mark, we’ll add options that will allow you to get the print copy. If we don’t and you want a print copy, I’ll make the POD available and you can get a copy with only an up-charge for the difference.

You also do not see a line item for T-Shirts. I didn't want to inflate our monetary requirements with these kind of fringe items, but we obviously have the design ready to go. If it is the T-shirt you really want, make a minimum pledge and you will be the first to be able to order it.

The Host and Author

I was born and raised in Iowa and heavily involved with 4-H. I graduated from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee with degrees in Computer Science and Environmental Geography. I have worked as a software engineer, a restaurant manager, and a naturalist. Now I run a media outfit called Pulp Gamer Media where I work on transmedia projects such as The Bob & Angus Show and produce audio and video media for companies like Mayfair Games, Looney Labs, GAMA, and MasterPieces Puzzle Company. In my spare time I make beer and play in the SCA as Lord Donndubán Ó Domhnaill (Donovan O’Donnell) of house Del la Roc, the barony of Tir Ysgithr, and Kingdom of Atenveldt. I am driven by passion, vision, and community.

The Rest of the Team

Mentors, advisers, and fellow brewers so far include Steve Wortman(Sir Justin Du Roc), and Zach Lister. My fabulous director is Eric Schumacher (Picture Arizona, Zhon: The Alien Interviews). My video editing and production team include Erin Lee Newburn, Scott Forster, Victoria Rendon, Vicky Wortman, Drew Kallen, and Ginger Ferguson. The music is by Peter Gorritz. Others shown in the demo video include Steve Wortman and Shane Nault(Sir Rudiger Seraphin). Ron Blessing (The Game’s the Thing, Smiling Jack’s Bar & Grill) is editing. Book layout will be by Hal Mangold (Green Ronin Publishing). Graphic Art is by Arterial Red. Other heroes that have inspired me but have no involvement in the project include Alton Brown, Ray Daniels, Charlie Papazian, and Batman.

- Rewards -

The Recipe Book - As I research each theme, I jot down notes and look for inspirations to pull from when crafting the recipes. I take as many things into account as possible, pulling from history, geography, and general aesthetics to put together the right mixture of malt, yeast, and hops. I will share all of these details with you in the book so you will not only know how to make the beers, but why they were made the way they were made. Along the way you will learn a bit of history, science, and perhaps even pop culture. Themes are taken from science fiction, fantasy, games, mythology, and history; especially medieval history.

Examples include: the Arkham Pale Ale, the Brownie Braggot, King Henry, the Wizard’s Wit, Dwarven Stout, Elven Blonde, Brown Dragon Ale, Brew42, and an ever-expanding list. The book will be available in electronic format or print format if the appropriate stretch goal is met.

The DVD - To accompany the book, we are also developing a series of short videos to iteratively guide a new brewer down the first steps on the road to mastery. Each video will use one of the recipes and go into more and more detail as the series progresses. The first will just be an overview of the process. The second will talk more about sanitation. By the time we get to the episode on bottling, you’ll be able to make your own beer following precise instructions. Each episode after that will expand and improve your process, giving you a better understanding of hops, yeast, and malt. These are all wrapped up with colorful introductions like the samples shown in the video above.

The initial series is planned to have six videos in it. If the appropriate stretch goal is met, we’ll add 2 more to further your brewing skills to a more advanced level that will already be described in the book.

The Celebration - We have teamed up with Lonesome Valley Brewing in Prescott Arizona to celebrate the launching of the project. Meet some other homebrewers and talk beer over the taps. You are responsible for your own travel, lodging, food, and beer consumption. Lonesome Valley Brewing is right by some prime vacationing destinations. We advise you to stay a while.

The Monthly Program - If you signed up to receive the book, electronic or print, we’ll send you a recipe every month until you have the book in your hands.

Digital Beer Labels - Download and print right onto beer label paper to give your bottles of homebrew that extra level of class.

The T-Shirt - At any pledge level, you will have the opportunity to be the first to order our “Brew or Brew Not” T-shirt. There is no try. By the time we collect pledges, there may even be other merchandise. What else would you want?

Brew with Me - Do you want even more? Come brew with me. You have my attention all day, so ask me as many questions as you would like. You must be at least 21. You are also responsible for travel and lodging.

Custom Recipe - If you were to have an ale made just for you, what would it taste like? Where would the inspiration come from? At this pledge level, I will help you to answer those questions, then we are going to make it happen. We can name it after you, a loved one, or your favorite mythological creature.

 What Do I Do Now?

Pledge, of course. Aside from that, tell all of your friends. Keep up with us on Facebook and Twitter. I’ll be putting frequent updates there as well as some gems and other #FunFacts.

Risks and challenges

Believe it or not, one of the challenges will also be what to do with the extra beer. I suspect that with the help of the community, we might come up with some ideas.

Kidding aside, we have a lot of beer to make and test over the next few months – so much that if I were to do it all myself, I would be pushing the legal limits of homebrewing. Fortunately, I have a lot of talented friends that can pick up some of the load. It was important to me that before we got the project started, we lined up as many of the right people as possible to make it work. I already have almost 20 recipes ready to go, so we have a good proof of concept.

Time is always a factor. We have had a couple of new clients come in the door recently, which has been good but it has also been a test of my time management skills. This is likely to happen throughout the course of the project as well. We are moving into a new building in the middle of the summer, and that will also make it challenging. There might be a little gap in our productivity for a couple of weeks there. Fortunately, I have a couple of excellent employee candidates waiting to climb aboard to help, should the need arise. I have also learned that I do better when I set aside some time to enjoy the beer making process. It relaxes me. The writing lets me feed my creative need and that just makes the rest of the work I do go by very pleasantly. This project just has to be done.
