Note on the $25 Reward Level: I've added a new reward to the $25 level. A Setting Guide to the Voodoo Western. Information regarding the civil war, the Black Codes, voodoo objects, rituals and culture, firearms, economy and more. Not only is this a comprehensive look at my research it's in invaluable tool for anyone wanting to write or run a game in the setting, including several pages of bibliography.
I have been calling myself a writer for almost two years now. While my life had been consumed by the written word I felt there was as a certain confidence I needed to garner in order to really put my work out there. This November I completed the National Novel Writing Month challenge - 50,000 words in a month. While word count was paramount to the challenge it was important to me to develop solid story and believable characters. In achieving my goals I proved to myself that I could complete the part of the process that most challenged me - putting words to paper.
This and another project* sparked me to write a novel a month. Ambitious but doable. I have the support and the talent I need (aside from my own mad storytelling skills). I have the first novel completed and through the first revision. Editors are working on it now. On to book two.
For my first novel I am going with a grassroots approach, Kickstarter. I want to put my book in the hands of people I really believe will appreciate my writing, both form and function.
Not only do I want to see my writing in someone else's eager hands, I also want to bring back a genre that gets so little attention in the print media today - the Western. I want people to be inspired by my books to go back to the classics of Elmore Leonard, Zane Gray and Louis L'Amore. There is something enduring and endearing about the characters and landscapes of these writers that I have always wanted to capture. Add a heap of speculation and wonder to those classic authors and you've hit upon the types of stories I want to share.
So how is this going to work? As you see we have a ton of rewards for backers, from PDFs to artistic renderings of voodoo dolls.
Achievement: Second novel in the trilogy
Wherever the rewards mention the available materials it will always include A Road Paved In Iron. When, however, this project reaches $6000 the second novel will be unlocked and delivered in February. This novel is set in the same time period as the first but along with the ongoing tale of the Louisianna bayou some of the characters find themselves embroiled in the happenings of Haiti and we look into the past of character's families and heritage.
Achievement: Third novel unlocked
When the project reaches pledges exceeding $12,000 the third book in the series is unlocked and added to all rewards. The third book in the series continues Louisiana's haunting tale in light of the end of slavery as the Antebellum South knows it.
Any pledge of $25 or more will include all unlocked materials.
Achievement: Initiates of the Ridden
One more added bonus! Hidden within the pages of the Voodoo Western series a secret formula is revealed. It conveys the roots and practices of dark secret societies among the practitioners. The first one hundred to pledge and send in a request for admittance gain a certificate officially initiating them into the shadowy annuls of it's history (initiation may require a video of you dancing to a tribal beat).
There will be a number of benefits revealed throughout the project but the first perk of membership is an opportunity to get more for your pledge: Every ten unique people that pledge $25 or more and mention you in the comments page will bump your pledge rewards up one level. So if you pledged $50 and get ten people to mention you in the comments after they pledge you get the awards listed on the $75 pledge level. You also get listed in the books among the members of the secret society (it will be more cloak and dagger than just saying "Hey, this dude's a member of the Sons of Ogun!" I mean what fun's a secret society if it's not secret?).
So let the magic begin. There are so many exciting things happening this season and I really can't wait to see what we can all accomplish together. Keep an eye on the project. This isn't just a fire-and-forget phenomena. We'll not only have a pledge party (secret society meetups), and some fun awards and accolades to early pledges but there will be regular updates including no less than three videos of readings from the novels.
Thanks for your support,
