Hello! I'm Coni Yovaniniz, a comic artist from Santiago, Chile. We're running this Kickstarter to print my first long-running original webcomic—Postcards in Braille!
Postcards in Braille is a comic about a group of friends stepping into adulthood, in a world not too different from ours. Oh, and two of these friends are dating. And one of them is blind.
This comic originally ran as a webcomic from 2014 to 2017, and it is fully available to read online on its website or on the Tapas platform. Although the comic itself is not in Braille (I...get this question a lot), the website has a full text transcript of each page underneath!
Postcards in Braille is made of individual self-contained pages or “episodes”, but there’s also a longer narrative going in the back (think of a TV sitcom).
This comic has friendship, romance, self-discovery, the worst band you’ve ever heard, Braille literacy, and blindness awareness. It has no mature content so it’s suitable for all ages, but it’s aimed at teens and young adults. The general tone of the comic is very light-hearted and kind—like a good friend!
We’re printing Postcards in Braille as a full-color softcover book! At 6 x 8.5 inches, it will have around 180 pages which include all of Postcards in Braille, plus some bonus material like a short tutorial on making comics, sketches, and thumbnails!
The book will also feature some wonderful guest illustrations done by some really cool folks!!
Art by Joni Miller, Chris Riley, and Sole Gatica.
More guest illustrations will be featured throughout this campaign, so keep an eye on the Updates section!!
In addition to the book itself, you can also get some sweet extra rewards!
Backers pledging $5 and up will get a high-res digital wallpaper for mobile and desktop.
Backers pledging $10 and up will get a PDF of the book.
Backers pledging $20 and up will get a copy of the book!
Backers pledging $30 and up (except the Two books tier) will get a sticker set AND a set of postcards featuring the guest illustrations from the book.
Backers pledging $50 and up (except the Two (books + goodies) tier) will get an exclusive DOG & FRIES LINOPRINT! Each of these is hand-printed on 13 x 15 cm (about 5.9 x 7 inches) sheets of Bristol board with Schmincke water-based lino ink. Each copy is signed and numbered. It's a small run that I'm only printing for this Kickstarter, so this is your only chance to get one! (note that each print might have some small discoloration in some parts--no two prints are alike, but they all look great!)
Backers pledging $100 and up will get a digital commission! Get a custom drawing of yourself, a friend, your character, or whoever you want in the style of Postcards in Braille! (just keep it safe for work and we'll be fine)
Although Coni (the author) is from Chile, we're doing printing and fulfillment from the United States. Here's our cool little team!
And here's a breakdown of our budget:
I want to thank everyone who read the comic over the years for their encouragement and support—we wouldn't be here without you! We're really excited to bring this comic to print and I hope you're excited too!
Risks and challenges
This is our first time running a Kickstarter campaign, but we've done extensive research to make sure everything goes well. The comic is finished and ready to print, and we're only waiting on small details (like the names for the thank you page) to print the book right after the campaign is done and payments are processed. There might be delays if the campaign grows more than we expect, though—we're only a small human team, after all! In any case we'll be sure to keep you all updated through the project page.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
