Have a question?
Our 5th anniversary of being scammed. Dosnt it feel great that Kickstarter allows things like this with zero accountability.
Any new news here?
I just received a letter back from the Ohio Attorney General's office. they have forwarded it to the Ohio Department of Commerce. Maybe something will happen. I you also live in a state where you can file online, I would encourage you do to so.
I know its probably a long shot, but I just reported this to the Ohio Attorney General's Office. Maybe he didnt pay taxes on this scam. That would be a good way to get him.
Can anyone in the US do something?
There should be a consequences to them
The worst part for myself on this scammed Kickstarter project? I backed for 2 decks originally in the beginning before it closed. After it closed, I emailed asking to back for 12 decks instead of the 2 I originally sought and he was perfectly happy taking more money from me. Why wouldn't he? There was no intention of fulfilling from the get-go which has become more apparent with time...
That's awesome about the Asylum playing cards. Take notice, Department of Design. Make good, or it might come back to bite you. Seriously, at the *very least*, give everyone PDFs of the cards. Based on the images seen in the campaign, you have that much already done. The radio silence is an embarrassment and shows utter lack of integrity on your part. I've backed over 74 projects on Kickstarter and every. single. one. delivered. Every one. And they were far more complex than this project. The logistics and process of printing a deck of cards is pretty simple. SMH. This is embarrassing.
(If someone wants to go through my posts in this epic thread, you'll see I started out pretty patient and balanced and giving the creators of this project the benefit of the doubt.)
Apparently backers managed to get a court to deal with this card set on kickstarter....
A reminder of the money you stole from people.
Fuck this maricon.
Good job on stealing.
No updates, no one really cares, it seems that no one can do a thing (not certainly myself from Italy..) ... that's all folks.
This project is the worst ever.
Any updates? Have been waiting for the past 4 years
I hope you two were thankful for all of the money you stole from the backers. I am sure your family is proud of you.
Any updates on the $37,092 stolen?
This was my first pledge and I still feel the sting when I think back to this campaign. Maybe when Obama is no longer in office, we will see some justice. This guy is nothing but a thief and I'd like to see him pay but not just what I've pledged. I've always been in favor of refund plus interest on my money! However, I would forgo any claim to the money if he wound up serving some jail time.
Why doesn't he at least give a downloadable copy to the backers?
Does anyone start sue him already?
Also, wanted to put this here, just for reference, since I was a part of this KS. Guy tried to disappear.
I have the cards, which came out of no where after the law got involved enough to make him fulfill.
I think the most irk-ing part of this is that this d-bag is duping us by using the founding fathers. I really thing they'd have punched him in the nuts till he died of swelling a long time ago. Sadly we are just living in a neutered nation.
This article made me think of this KS.
The fact that he walked away with $37k and isn't being held accountable is ridiculous.
I don't have the time, but figured I'd throw this link out there, in case someone wants to pursue.
Here I had assumed all along that these got sent to an old address and I never bothered to follow up. What a rude surprise I found instead...
I periodically check this project. My first scam, the one that hurts the most.
Bump for scam awareness.
Sorry @Jeff. It appears this is all but dead, and John Slabyk has scammed 1,138 backers out of $37,092. His connection to Obama and other politicians in D.C. will make him immune anyway... and he knows it. I would for sure join anything that would go after this scam artist despite that, and hoping he gets what he deserves one day.
Any updates from those keeping track?
It is rather amazing that a person like John Slabyk can get away with bold and open thievery in this day and age. He has, and seemingly nothing will be done about it.
Somehow, I'm connected to him in degrees through LinkedIn. I guess the Chicago design community is smaller than I thought... https://www.linkedin.com/in/humanot
How's it like living life on money you stole? I hope the guilt eats at you daily.
@David - news?
@ David S - Any news?? At least tell me this guy was caught!
Glad to see the ruling in WA, this is the first I've read about it.
Just checking in. I hope this is resolved soon.
@David S --- Any news of the FTC filing? Thanks for getting it started!
@David S — I hope something happens with the FTC investigation. At a minimum, John Slabyk could provide the PDFs for the cards to all backers so we can PnP.
Hello everyone - I thought of this earlier today and have since been on the warpath about it. I filed a complaint with the FTC (who recently were successful against another Kickstarter fraud) and the DC Attorney General, since I live there (as it turns out, it appears our friend John Slabyk lives in DC too). I'll let you all know if I get some traction.
His most recent tweet dated three days ago:
"Be acceptive of the deceptive. Never to conceal, only to reveal."
@Kasey Frerichs - unfortunately I am not anymore. :(
Still checking in from time to time. At least John Slabyk's name comes up as a Kickstarter fraud on the first page of google searches.
it's truly incredible how a man could just disappear like this
How many of us are in Washington? Not sure where to start but willing to help.
i'm glad this has not been forgotten. i bet he never thought the fallout would last this long.
Not surprising to see that many backers are still checking in (because the design really was great and something worth supporting) and that many are posting on the recent legal decision against a Kickstarter campaign that failed to materialize (http://www.polygon.com/2015/9/11/9310945/kickstarter-court-victory-attorney-general-washington-asylum-playing-cards). Maybe someday all of us who supported you will be remunerated, if not get what we pledged to receive which I think is what would truly make us happy — and at that time, you may not be feeling so good about pocketing nearly $40 grand years ago. Hope you put it to very good use.
I wish I got these, they were one of my favorite card designs on KS. I don't think he understood the potential, watta waste.
First successful lawsuit against a scam Kickstarter. Maybe there is hope for us.
