Whether you are killing time waiting for the bus, practicing for a regional contest, or just trying to get some creative juices flowing, yo-yos are a great hobby for all skill levels.
While the technology keeps getting better and better, yo-yos keep getting bigger and bigger. That's why we wanted to design a high performance ball bearing yo-yo that could easily fit into the pockets of your tightest skinny jeans. People still wear skinny jeans, right?
The Executive is a high quality, ball bearing yo-yo in a mini-size. It's approximately 2" by 1.5", which is almost half the size of most top selling yo-yos. For something so small, it's amazing how well these things play. They take advantage of modern design and non-response yo-yo play to really pack a punch. Note, the following specs are subject to change:
- Made in Oregon, USA
- Diameter: 44.45mm
- Width: 30.30mm
- Gap: 4.30mm
- Bearing: Large Size C Stainless Steel (10 ball)
- Stock Response: One Drop Flow Groove
- Weight: about 54 grams
- Material: Aluminum 6061
- Color: "Kickstarter Green"
- Includes a 3 pack of orange Candy Wire string
- Pyramatte finish
We are offering The Executive, a high performance miniature yo-yo, in this exclusive "Kickstarter green" finish. Once this campaign ends, we'll never offer this color green again.
For the first 24 hours of our launch, we'll be offering a special blue and yellow "swirl" anodized option that looks absolutely stunning. Once that day has passed, we'll never offer this color option again.
We also have an awesome Executive T-Shirt designed by Paul Escolar, a yo-yo legend, creator of the Green Triangle, and a recipient of the National Innovator of the Year award.
At our higher levels, we are offering some of our earliest prototypes. These versions are 3 grams lighter than the final run and have a boxier outer edge. These prototypes are all anodized in our Kickstarter green color.
At the very highest level, we have the first 3 prototypes that we made. This includes: a small bearing version of the Executive at 52.7 grams that is anodized in a blue and yellow swirl, an un-colored large bearing Executive at 52.7 grams (the very first of our prototypes), and an un-colored large bearing Executive with boxier edges and lighter than the other models at 51 grams. All three of these yo-yos have been played with during our testing phase and photos are available by request. Also included in this set is the first sketches by Doc and Ernest that were used by One Drop to design this wonderful yo-yo.
About the design
We started off with just one main goal: creating a yo-yo that played great, but could easily fit inside your pocket. We began drawing some shapes and ideas and collaborating with the folks at One Drop.
Many undersized yo-yos try to pack on the weight, but The Executive proves that small yo-yos don't have to feel really heavy to be fun.
Collectively, Doc and Ernest have been in the yo-yo business for over 30 years... but we don't own a machine shop of our own, so we need your help to place the minimum order and make this dream project a reality. We think this is the perfect pocket size yo-yo and we've found the perfect machine shop to work with. With your help, we can make this yo-yo a reality.
If we reach $7,000, every Executive will come with a ten pack of orange string made by Candy Wire. (REACHED)
If we reach $10,000, each Executive will come with an embossed black jewelry-style box. (REACHED)
If we reach $16,000, Doc and Ernest will run the world's first ever "World Mini-Yo Contest". (REACHED)
If we reach $23,000, we will add a second color option for backers to choose from. Once the campaign has ended, backers will have the option of the Kickstarter Green Executive OR a Blue Executive yo-yo. (almost there)
If we reach $31,000, we will donate $1,000 to Bay Area services for kids. $500 of this will be a cash donation to a local Toys For Tots program. We'll also donate $500 worth of great plastic yo-yos and free yo-yo lessons to an after school program in SF.
If we reach $56,000 we produce a 16 page, yo-yo trick booklet illustrated by Doctor Popular, Paul Escolar, Drew Tetz and other yo-yo artists.
Risks and challenges
There's always a risk of any project getting delayed, but we've taken many steps to keep the project as manageable as possible.
1. The prototypes are finished and we've created small runs of fully assembled and anodized yo-yos to our testers. They love the results.
2. All machining, anodizing, and assembly is done in the US. So there's no chance that US Customs will just lose our entire shipment and we have direct contact with our machinists.
3. We are working closely with One Drop Design, the most knowledgable, experienced, and well trusted yo-yo manufacturer in the US. As designers, we've heard too many stories of a prototype being approved, but the final run looking totally different... so knowing our machinists is very important to us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
