Do they HONK! in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil?
Why yes, yes they do! (notice how deftly I avoided using any references to bears or woods)
We were thrilled and delighted when the band Os Siderais got in touch with us to say they were an activist street band in Rio [that] "has a work very and totally based in street ocupation, social, ecological and (the good) political activities" and wanted know if there was any way they could come to Somerville to pay with their fellow bands.
When we saw videos like this:
(which was at a show to help protest the Indians of Aldeia Maracanã being expelled from their homes because of the World Cup competition in the Maracanã stadium) and this:
(which they describe as "a Siderais's composition "Praça da liberdade" with a poor neighborhood / favela in Cariri, with childs dancing rock n' roll").
we knew we had to do everything we could to raise money to bring them to HONK!. This is the sort of band travel your contribution is helping to fund.
Thank you to everyone who has pushed us over the the $7,000 mark, we have only $5,000 left to raise. Thank you for your contribution and thank you for your efforts on Facebook, Twitter, email, and carrier pigeon to get the word out about this Kickstarter campaign.
P.S. Oh, and the video of them "give up the funk" (playing a Parliament song), that was pretty convincing too....
