What is Steamfunk?
Steamfunk is a sepia comic which is a bit of steampunk (duh), a pinch of diesel punk, western, and fantasy. Obvious influences are Wizard of Oz and Firefly, but the "funk" serves dual purpose referring to the musical references throughout the story as well as the state of the world the characters exist in. The story will follow the adventures of a trader/delivery girl, Deaux, as she gets pulled into the biggest job she's ever taken on. Issue 0 will be ~25 pages and completely ad free. The series is planned to be 8 to 10 issues, but consider Issue 0 the pilot. If successful there is a possibility of continuing work on more issues.
Zilla has helped fund six Kickstarter programs with nothing but great things to say for the service. It is a wonderful way for artists to not only bring their ideas to fruition, but be able to directly interact with fans before the comic is in their hands. All money raised here will go to cover the cost of creating each page, the cover, the limited prints, physical copies for donators, and a limited run for taking to Pacific Northwest comic conventions. All donators will be publicly thanked in the back of Issue 0 as it would not be possible to complete this project without you.
All donators will have access to exclusive Kickstarter updates with sketches and peeks at the final product as we get closer to the completed comic.
This is the first writing project that I have ever made public and the first time that I have been lucky enough to work with Luke McKay. The idea of Steamfunk has been rolling around in my head for years now. As an avid comic reader (Fan of Atomic Robo, The Sixth Gun, Locke & Key, and anything by Brian Wood) I realized that comics held the perfect blend of visual art and storytelling to bring Steamfunk to life. Between his experience on the Rooster Teeth comic and his own web comic, Balls 2 That, Luke was the natural choice to help me show the world what lives in my brain. It's really fun listening to him plan out just how crazy he can make an action scene look. We are definitely pushing each other on our first collaboration and I hope you'll see that effort in the final product.
I've seen many comics looking for support here at Kickstarter. Most of which are long and autobiographical stories but with no promise of a visual experience. With this comic I'm looking for your support so that I can put in full time hours and more to make the best visuals I have ever made to date. I've been working on new styles and trained more with computer graphic capabilities for this comic. I need your support on this as I plan to put so much of my time into this that I won't have time for any other work. Zilla has a great story full of many wondrous imagery and I would love to put my best effort into drawing this to blow you away.
Kickstarter funding will end mid-February. Shortly after that Luke will get cracking full-time to finish up the art. We'll do some edits, finish the print, and then send everything off for printing. We expect to have it in your hands by May (hopefully sooner).
