Time: The 1930s...
Follow the adventurers of intrepid archaeologist Montana "Monty" Jones as he travels the globe looking for mysterious occult artefacts with his father, Professor North Dakota Jones, and grandfather, Schliemannian Chair of Archaeology Minnesota Jones.
I've been making Irregular Webcomic! since 2002. The first print collection was successfully Kickstarted in 2016. Now it's time for the second print collection! This book collects the first 530-odd strips of the Cliffhangers theme (up to the hiatus period beginning in 2013).
The book will be paperback, 150 or so pages, 8.5×11 inches, full colour. It includes:
- The first 530 Cliffhangers comic strips from IWC #24 to #3180.
- Character biographies.
- A detailed map showing all the travels of the Joneses by gaming cartographer Dirk Collins (sneak preview below) (the typos will be corrected before printing).
Every backer level which includes a physical copy of the book also includes a PDF digital copy. At stretch goal levels, the book may expand to include new bonus strips, expanded character backgrounds, and other goodies.
The postcards are 230×100 mm (9×4 inch) postcards with my favourite selected Cliffhangers comic strips printed on them. The set of five includes 5 different strips.
Original comic art is also available at higher backer levels. This includes original hand drawn artwork by me for my Star Trek webcomic Planet of Hats, and the original hand drawn art for IWC strip #1157 by Andrew Bird. See the backer levels for details.
Note: The book does not include the text annotations originally published underneath the comic strips on the website. I know people like them, but they just won't fit into the book at a reasonable size and price. However, see the stretch goals for bonus pages to include selected annotations.
Note: Kickstarter requires me to set pledge levels in Australian dollars - the numbers may look SCARY HIGH if you're used to other money. It's significantly lower in most other currencies. Kickstarter will convert currencies for you when you pledge.
AUD$1: Good vibes
You support this project with no regard whatsoever for your personal material gain! You get sincere thanks and remote good vibes from me. You are officially a Patron of The Arts!
AUD$6: PDF copy
You get a PDF digital copy of the book for reading on your phone, tablet, or computer. None of this old-fashioned flipping pages with your hands!
You get a PDF digital copy of the book, plus a set of 5 comic postcards. Use them to spread the word, say his to friends, or inflict horrendous puns on your enemies!
AUD$34 (about US$25): The book!
You get a printed copy of the book, to flip through with your very own hands. How retro! You also get a PDF digital copy.
AUD$40: Book + postcards
You get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, and a set of 5 comic postcards. Wowee!
AUD$60: Trekker (animated) (Limited: 12 backers)
Ever wanted to own original comic artwork, but figured there was no way you could afford it or were cool enough? Good news! You're reading this, so of course you're cool enough. And with this reward level you get an original comic artwork by me: one episode from my Star Trek webcomic Planet of Hats - specifically one of The Animated Series episodes. The artwork is drawn in ink on a single A4 sheet of card (297×210 mm; 8.3×11.7 inches), and you can choose which episode you want - first in, first served. When you select this reward level, pick your episode from the available episodes A.1 through A.22 on this list and email me your choice to reserve it. You also get a printed copy of the Cliffhangers book, and a PDF copy.
You get two copies of the book! One for you and one for a friend (or enemy!), and you can split the postage and save. And since you're paying for two books, I'll throw in a set of the 5 comic postcards for you to fight over! And you also get a PDF digital copy of the book (which you can make into two copies by copying it - amazing, I know!).
AUD$68: The Cliffhangers book + the Fantasy book
Missed the last Kickstarter? Never mind, you can get a copy of Prepare for the Wurst, plus a copy of the Fantasy book: Burning Down the Alehouse! And you also get a PDF digital copy of both books and a set of the Cliffhangers postcards (sorry, the Fantasy postcards are all gone).
AUD$85: Trekker (original) (Limited: 25 backers)
Animated Series not your cup of tea? Get one of The Original Series episodes from my Star Trek webcomic Planet of Hats - hand drawn by yours truly. The artwork is drawn in ink on two A4 sheets of card, and you can choose which episode you want - first in, first served. When you select this reward level, pick your episode from the available episodes 1.1 through 3.24 on this list and email me your choice to reserve it. Or alternatively you can choose the movie Star Trek Generations at this pledge level if you prefer. You also get a printed copy of the Cliffhangers book, and a PDF copy.
AUD$100: Strip #1157 original art (Limited: 1 backer)
You get Andrew Bird's original pencil drawing for Irregular Webcomic! strip #1157. This is a Fantasy strip which didn't get nabbed during the Fantasy book Kickstarter. This artwork measures 420x160 mm (16.5×6 inches). It has been folded in half and Lambert in the first panel is a bit smudged, but it still looks cool as (scan below). You also get a printed copy of the Cliffhangers book, and a PDF copy.
Get one of the first 6 Star Trek movies from my webcomic Planet of Hats. The artwork is drawn in ink on four A4 sheets of card, and you can choose which movie you want - first in, first served. When you select this reward level, pick your movie from the available ones The Motion PIcture to The Undiscovered Country on this list and email me your choice to reserve it. You also get a printed copy of the Cliffhangers book, and a PDF copy.
AUD$250: Fame + fortune (Limited: 1 backer)
You get to be in Irregular Webcomic! Holy cow! I'll make a LEGO® minifigure version of you, which will appear in a future comic in a theme of your choice, with your name. You'll be (very mildly) famous, for much less than it would cost to rig a major global awards ceremony! You also get a printed copy of the Cliffhangers book, and a PDF copy. And I'll send you the LEGO® version of yourself when I'm done photographing it!
I'm using Make That Thing (MTT) for fulfilment. MTT is a small company set up almost exclusively to help comic artists print and sell books. MTT can source competitive printers, take delivery of pallets of books, warehouse them, and ship them out to individual backers. MTT is based in the USA, where most of my readers are located - so most of you will benefit from lower postage costs than me doing it all here in Australia.
MTT have successfully handled dozens of projects just like this one, including my first Kickstarter book, so I know they'll do a great job.
Postage sucks, I know. I live in Australia - believe me, I know.
Postage to USA and Canada is a few cents above the cost quoted to me by MTT, because Kickstarter only allows me to set postage in whole AU$ amounts.
Postage to Australia is being done by shipping a big box of books to me, and I will personally repack and mail them locally to Aussie backers. This reduces the total postage for you. (If you backed the previous book, use the savings this time to buy that beer I promised you.)
Postage to the rest of the world is quoted by MTT at about AU$31, but I'm charging AU$27 (for one book*), because over $30 on postage just sucks. That's a dollar less than the postage on the previous book. If you're in the USA or Canada and agree that international backers shouldn't have to pay $31 just for postage, you can elect to choose one of the "postage goodwill" backer levels. The extra dollar you pay will help offset my loss in subsidising international postage. If you'd like to help even more, you can voluntarily pledge higher than the backer level you choose. Thank you.
* Postage for 2 books costs a little bit more, alas.
Funding goal and expenses
I set the first book's goal to AU$22,000. We barely scraped across the line. This time I've set it at a more modest $5000, to make sure we reach the target and you get your books. Look, honestly, at $5000 (about 125 backers), I'm gonna make a loss, but it's not a disaster because I can print spare copies and sell them after the campaign. But last time we got 509 backers, so we should get close to a stretch goal of about $22,000.
Where's the money going?
Assuming 500 backers (last time we got 509), we'll raise about AU$22,000. Here's the expense breakdown:
- AU$1,980: Kickstarter Australia fees (9% of funding total).
- AU$6,270: Book printing and delivery to MTT's warehouse.
- AU$6,600: MTT's project management fees.
- AU$670: MTT's per backer fees.
- AU$5,300: Postage and handling to send books to backers.
- AU$330: Map commission, book layout.
- Total expenses: AU$21,150
So, this is my best estimate of how things will go: I get a profit of $850. (And pay about $300 of that in tax to the Australian Government!)
Let's see now... we should make the $10,000 level; let's really pull out the stops and try for the next one too!
AU$10,000: I'll make some new exclusive bonus strips to include in the book. These will fill in some story gaps caused by the universe being destroyed (long story...).
AU$11,000: New extended character background biographies for the Joneses, Kolonel Haken, Erwin, Sallah, and various others.
AU$20,000: Mystery bonus content. Fan art, photos or sketches by me, extra maps, who knows!
And if we exceed expectations:
AU$25,000: Annotations! I'll include some of the more erudite and informative Cliffhangers strip annotations, updated and expanded for your reading pleasure.
Phew... thanks for reading this far!
Risiken und Herausforderungen
This is my second comic print collection Kickstarter, and the first one went well. Printing and shipping took a bit longer than expected, but everyone got their books and I know what to expect this time. We had a few hiccups with book covers delaminating, but the few backers who experienced this (less than a dozen out of 500+ backers) got replacement copies.
The comics are all made - the only things that need to be done are book layout, printing, and posting. Once again I'm using Make That Thing (http://makethatthing.com/) for fulfilment, and fulfilling webcomic book projects is pretty much their raison d'être. They are handling the layout, printing, and shipping of all rewards, and have a very successful track record, including my first book.Näheres zur Rechenschaftspflicht auf Kickstarter
