Irregular Webcomic!: Burning Down the Alehouse

23.935 AU$

509

I've been making Irregular Webcomic! since 2002. Finally, after 13 years, it's time for the first print collection! This book collects the first 500 strips of the Fantasy theme (up to the hiatus period beginning in 2013).

Join Lambert the merchant, Alvissa the elf, Mordekai the loveable rogue, Kyros the fire wizard, Draak the lizard man, and Dwalin the dwarf, as they travel across the land, destroying taverns, telling awful puns, and - eventually - completing their first epic quest.

Rewards

The book will be paperback, 140 pages, 8.5×11 inches, full colour. It includes:

  • The first 500 Fantasy comic strips from IWC #3 to #3191.
  • New expanded character biographies.
  • A new map of the Fantasy world by fantasy/gaming cartographer Michael J. Patrick.
  • All-new cover art by long-time IWC fan artist Andrew Bird (work in progress below - layout may change).

Every backer level which includes a physical copy of the book also includes a PDF digital copy. At stretch goal levels, the book may expand to include new bonus strips, expanded character backgrounds, copies of Andrew Bird's fan art, and other goodies.

The postcards are standard sized postcards with selected Fantasy comic strips printed on them. A set of five includes 5 different strips.

Original art is also available at higher backer levels. This includes the book cover art, additional IWC fan art by Andrew Bird, and artwork by me for my Star Trek webcomic Planet of Hats. See the backer levels for details.

"It's Quite Irregular" is an IWC fan song about the Fantasy gang written in 2013 by Eben Brooks (the twisted mind behind the YouTube hit "Hey There Cthulhu"). It appears on his new album "Doctor, Captain, Dovahkiin, Chief", which is available on CDBaby, iTunes, and Amazon. Every pledge level which includes the book (either PDF or hardcopy) will also include a DRM-free MP3 download of the song.

Note: The book does not include the text annotations originally published underneath the comic strips on the website. I know people like them, but they just won't fit into the book at a reasonable size and price. However, see the stretch goals for bonus pages to include selected annotations.

Backer levels

Note: Kickstarter requires me to set pledge levels in Australian dollars - the numbers may look SCARY HIGH if you're used to other money. Kickstarter will convert currencies for you when you pledge. For a rough estimate take the AUD amount and halve for GBP, take 2/3 for euro, or take 3/4 for USD (neat coincidence, huh?). As long as no countries go bankrupt in the next 30 days, it shouldn't vary by much.

AU$1: Good vibes

You support this project with no regard whatsoever for your personal material gain! You get sincere thanks and remote good vibes from me. You are such a wonderful person!

AU$6: PDF copy

You get a PDF digital copy of the book for reading on your phone, tablet, or computer, and a DRM-free MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular". (You're also a wonderful person.)

AU$13 (approx. US$10): Postcards

You get a PDF digital copy of the book, plus a set of 5 comic postcards. Use them to spread the word, inflict horrendous puns on your enemies, or remind people how wonderful you are! You also get an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular".

AU$33 (approx. US$25): The book

You get a printed copy of the book, to flip through with your very own hands. You also get a PDF digital copy and an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular". And yes, you're also wonderful!

AU$34 (approx. US$26): The book + postage goodwill (USA/Canada backers only)

The books are being distributed from the USA. Postage to other countries is almost three times the postage to USA/Canada (see Postage below for details). That ain't fair. So I'm charging less than cost for postage to other countries. If you're one of the lucky people in the US or Canada, please consider backing at this level, where the extra AU$1 you pay (about 75 US cents) will help offset the postage cost for an overseas backer. You get exactly the same physical rewards as the AU$33 level (the book + PDF digital copy), plus the feeling of doing a good deed. Thank you - you're doubly wonderful.

AU$40 (approx. US$30): Book + postcards

You get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of 5 comic postcards. Wowee! Combined wonderfulness rating = amazing.

AU$60 (approx. US$45): Trekker (animated) (Limited: 10 backers)

Have you ever wanted to own original comic artwork, but figured there was no way you could afford it or were cool enough? Good news! You're reading this, so of course you're cool enough! And with this reward level you get an original comic artwork by me, of one episode from my Star Trek webcomic Planet of Hats - specifically one of The Animated Series episodes. (Sample artwork scan shown below.) The artwork is drawn in ink on a single A4 sheet of card, and you can choose which episode you want - first in, first served. When you select this reward level, pick your episode from the available episodes A.1 through A.22 on this list and email me your choice to reserve it. This is a US$5 discount on the normal price. You also get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of postcards.

AU$66 (approx. US$50): Two books + postcards

You get two copies of the book! And since you're paying twice as much and are twice as wonderful, I'll throw in a set of the 5 comic postcards. And you also get a PDF digital copy of the book and an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", (which you can make into two copies by copying it - amazing, I know!).

AU$85 (approx. US$65): Trekker (original) (Limited: 10 backers)

Animated Series not your cup of tea? Get one of The Original Series episodes from my Star Trek webcomic Planet of Hats - hand drawn by yours truly. (Sample artwork scan shown below.) The artwork is drawn in ink on two A4 sheets of card, and you can choose which episode you want - first in, first served. When you select this reward level, pick your episode from the available episodes 1.1 through 3.24 on this list (except Plato's Stepchildren) and email me your choice to reserve it. This is a US$10 discount on the normal price. You also get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of postcards.

AU$99 (approx. US$75): Three books + postcards

New reward level by popular demand! You get three copies of the book! And besides saving on postage with two friends you get a set of the 5 comic postcards. And you also get a PDF digital copy of the book and an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", (which you're welcome to make into three copies by copying them).

AU$100 (approx. US$75): Spellslinger (Limited: 3 backers)

Kyros will need to learn more spells in the future. Rather than call one "Humungous Conflagration" or something boring like that, imagine if it was called "O'Ryan's Humungous Conflagration"... and you are O'Ryan! Whoa! At this backer level, Kyros will learn a spell named after you, and use it in the comic. You will be immortalised by name as a powerful wizard in the Fantasy world (or as some powerful wizard's victim, if you prefer). You also get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of postcards. Oh yeah... you know how wonderful you are.

AU$120 (approx. US$90): Comic script notebooks (Limited: 1 backer)

I used to write my comic scripts in notebooks while commuting to work on the bus or train. I still have two of these notebooks, and with this reward level you can have them! They are A5-sized spiral bound 200-page notebooks. One is completely full of my handwritten original scripts for Irregular Webcomic! The first Fantasy strip in it is #2152, and the last is #3014. The second notebook continues from there, as far as #3174, which is only about 20 pages in - the rest of the book is blank, and can be used for your own notes if you like! The books also contain strips from every other theme, so that's over 1000 of my original scripts. These scripts often changed during production and differ from the final published comics, so you can see what they were like in their original rough form. And there are some cryptic marginal notes for Darths & Droids, Square Root of Minus Garfield, poll ideas, and perhaps other surprises! You also get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of postcards. Plus: I'll also send you the last pen I used to write in the notebooks, which is still sitting inside the spiral binding!

AU$130 (approx. US$100): "Teamwork" original fan art (Limited: 1 backer)

You get Andrew Bird's original inked drawing for the artwork "Teamwork", depicting the Fantasy gang in action. This artwork has unfortunately been slightly smudged by storage, but that just adds character! The art of me behind the GM's book is included on a separate sheet of paper. (Unretouched scans shown below.) You also get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of postcards.

AU$130: Strip #1157 original art (Limited: 1 backer)

You get Andrew Bird's original inked drawing for the IWC comic strip #1157. This artwork has been folded in half and the first panel is a bit smudged, but it still looks cool as. (Unretouched scan shown below.) You also get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of postcards.

AU$150 (approx. US$115): "Kyros" original fan art (Limited: 1 backer)

You get Andrew Bird's original inked drawing for the artwork "Kyros", depicting our favourite fire wizard in serious mode. This artwork is in good condition - not even a fireball scorch mark! (Unretouched scan shown below.) You also get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of postcards.

AU$150: Strip #1346 original art (Limited: 1 backer)

You get Andrew Bird's original inked drawing for the IWC comic strip #1346. This artwork has been folded in half but is otherwise in good condition. (Unretouched scan shown below.) Imagine this framed on your wall! You also get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of postcards.

AU$150: "Samaritans" original fan art (Limited: 1 backer)

You get Andrew Bird's original inked drawing for the artwork "Samaritans", depicting the gang coming to the rescue of Dwalin at their first encounter. This artwork is in great condition, and will complement any decor! (Unretouched scan shown below.) The mountains in the background of the final image are drawn on a separate sheet of paper, which you also get. You also get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of postcards.

AU$200 (approx. US$150): Meet me in New York City (Limited: 2 backers)

I will be in New York City on Saturday 18 June this year. With this reward you and one partner/friend can meet me over lunch, talk comics or whatever, and get some spur-of-the-moment hand scribbled comic art by me! I'll also bring along some random physical goodies related to my comics to give to you! This reward is an approximately 2-hour lunch meeting, and you also get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of postcards.

Two backers plus two friends plus me makes 5 for lunch, and also joining us will be webcomic blogger Gary Tyrell of Fleen.com. You must provide your own travel to New York City (midtown Manhattan) and split the lunch bill. My time in NYC is limited, I can only do lunch on 18 June. Contingency: If I cannot make it for any reason, or you cannot make it for any reason, I will arrange a refund of your pledge, down to the book+postcards level.

AU$200 (approx. US$150): Meet me in London (Limited: 2 backers)

I will be in London, England from 26-30 October this year. This is just like the New York City reward (above), except in London. The exact date and time of the meal is to be decided by mutual agreement - it may be lunch or dinner.

Two backers plus two friends plus me makes a group of 5. You must provide your own travel to London (most likely Chiswick area, not central London) and split the dinner bill. Contingency: If I cannot make it for any reason, or you cannot make it for any reason, I will arrange a refund of your pledge, down to the book+postcards level.

AU$200 (approx. US$150): Meet me in Sydney (Limited: 2 backers)

This is just like the New York City reward (above), except in Sydney, Australia. The exact date and time of the meal is to be decided by mutual agreement - it may be lunch or dinner. Since I live in Sydney, the date is also very flexible.

Two backers plus two friends plus me makes a group of 5. It is possible that some of my co-writers of Darths & Droids may join us. You must provide your own travel to Sydney and split the dinner bill. Contingency: If I cannot make it for any reason, or you cannot make it for any reason, I will arrange a refund of your pledge, down to the book+postcards level.

AU$200 (approx. US$150): Book cover art (Limited: 1 backer)

You get Andrew Bird's original inked drawings for the cover art of this book! Wowee! When someone attractive admires your copy of the book (as they will!), you can smile seductively and say, "By the way, I own the original cover art." This work was specially commissioned for the book and the artwork is in brand new condition. It's not even finished yet! But a scan of the working pencil sketch of Draak is shown below, and the sketch for Dwalin, Lambert, and Kyros is near the top of this page (the whole cover art is drawn on multiple sheets of paper). You also get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of postcards.

AU$250 (approx. US$190): Fame + fortune (Limited: 1 backer)

You get to be in Irregular Webcomic! Holy cow! I'll make a LEGO® minifigure version of you, which will appear in a future comic in a theme of your choice, with your name (or nom de plume). You'll be (very mildly) famous, for much less than it would cost to rig a major global awards ceremony! You also get a printed copy of the book, a PDF copy, an MP3 of "It's Quite Irregular", and a set of postcards. And I'll send you the LEGO® version of yourself when I'm done photographing it!

Fulfilment

I'm using Make That Thing for fulfilment. They are a small company set up almost exclusively to help comic artists print and sell books. They can source competitive printers, take delivery of pallets of books, warehouse them, and ship them out to individual backers. They're based in the USA, where most of my readers are located - so most of you will benefit from lower postage costs than me doing it all here in Australia. (This does mean, alas, that Australian backers will need to pay for postage from the USA. I owe you all a beer, okay?)

Make That Thing have successfully handled dozens of projects just like this one, and I'm sure they'll do a great job.

Postage

Make That Thing quoted me the following costs for postage and handling of a book (remember, shipping is from the USA):

  • USA: US$7.90 (approx. AU$10.50)
  • Canada: US$8.06 (approx. AU$10.70)
  • Rest of the world: US$23.38 (approx, AU$31)

Living in Australia, I know how awful international postage costs are. Furthermore:

  • Kickstarter requires me to set postage in whole number Australian dollars. I can't set it to AU$10.50 (I tried).
  • Most of my readers are in the USA or Canada.
  • Currency exchange rates fluctuate.

If I set the US/Canada postage cost to AU$10, I would take a loss of hundreds of dollars - a loss that gets bigger with more backers. And also bigger if the AU$ falls. So I set it at AU$11.

Figuring 80% US/Canada backers, the extra few cents each means I can afford to set the postage cost for the rest of the world AU$2 lower than cost. I figure none of you US/Canada folks will mind paying a few cents extra to let a buyer elsewhere in the world pay only AU$29 in postage instead of AU$31.

But you know, AU$29 postage still sucks. So I'm actually setting postage for the book to the rest of world at AU$28 - three dollars below cost. This is a risk, but I've added a special pledge level for USA/Canada residents, which adds a dollar on top of the basic book price. If you think the international postage is unfair, and want to help offset it for someone, you can do so by taking the AU$34 pledge level. One pledge at the AU$34 level will pay for the AU$1 postage discount on someone's international pledge.

If you want to help more, or you're an international backer and don't mind paying the full cost of your postage, you can always add additional funds to your total when you make your pledge.

Funding goal and expenses

I've set the funding goal for this project to AU$22,000 (approx. US$16,500). This corresponds to about 500 backers (Kickstarter includes postage in the funding total). I want this to succeed, so I set that number as low as I dare.

Where is the money going?

Assuming 500 backers who buy a book each, here's the expense breakdown:

  • AU$3,300: Legal fees for consulting intellectual property lawyers about selling a book containing photos of branded toys.
  • AU$1,980: Kickstarter Australia fees (9% of funding total).
  • AU$6,270: Book printing and delivery to Make That Thing's warehouse.
  • AU$8,100: Make That Thing's setup and project management fees.
  • AU$670: Make That Thing's per backer fees.
  • AU$5,300: Postage and handling to send books to backers.
  • AU$170: Map commission, Kickstarter video music licensing, book layout.
  • Total expenses: AU$25,790

That's right. If this project just falls across the line, I'll be making a loss of over AU$3000. But that's okay, because (a) next time won't have that legal fee up front, (b) I want to set a reasonable price per book, not jack the price up, (c) I want to get this thing printed and into your hands, not make a fortune doing so, and (d) I am hoping you folks will pull out the stops, spread the word, and find more than 500 backers!

MTT's setup/management fee is fixed, and as more books are ordered, the printing cost per book goes down. If we get to approximately 680 backers, then I'll break even. More than that, and I can start to think about how much tax I'll have to pay on the profit. Won't that be fun!

Stretch goals

AU$25,000: Bonus strips

I will make a few brand new bonus strips exclusively for the book, to fill in some small story gaps.

AU$29,000: Break even point

At this level, my expenses will be approximately offset by the funding total, and I will no longer be making a loss on this project. Yay!

AU$31,000: Foldout map

The map of the Fantasy world will be printed as a fold-out back page, rather than split across an internal double page spread. It'll look much nicer this way! This adds to the printing cost, so requires this funding total to be feasible.

AU$33,000: Extended character backgrounds

I'll add a few more pages to the book to allow telling a bit more of the story of each character before they began their adventuring life. Why did Lambert leave his comfortable home village? Let's find out!

AU$35,000: Annotations

Extra pages for including some of my selected favourite text annotations which originally accompanied the website publication of Fantasy strips.

"Please sir, can I have some more?"

I have some tantalising ideas for more stretch goals, but let's see how we go with these. If we bust through the above stretch goals, I'll add more! The only way to see what else I can dream up is to get this Kickstarter happening!

Thanks!

Thanks for reading all this way! I hope you're as excited about this project as I am!

Risiken und Herausforderungen

The comics are all made - the only things that need to be done are book layout, printing, and posting, which is what this Kickstarter is for. I'm using Make That Thing (http://makethatthing.com/) for fulfilment, and fulfilling webcomic book projects is pretty much their raison d'être. They are handling the layout, printing, and shipping of all rewards, and have a very successful track record.

I have hired intellectual property lawyers to ensure that my use of gaming figures and branded building block toys in my comics will not trigger copyright or trademark lawsuits over this book from any manufacturers. With this expert legal advice, I am very confident that there is no danger in this regard.

Make That Thing is helping me spreadsheet all the expenses and making sure I don't miss anything. If expenses DO turn out unexpectedly high for some reason (such as a sudden disturbance in the Australian dollar), I will wear the loss. I'm not going to let you folks be in the hole and not deliver the book.

Of course there's always Unforeseen Circumstances - volcanic eruption, asteroid strike, zombie outbreak, etc. If some disaster happens, I'll take every step within my power to ensure you get your rewards.
