About this project
TELL ME MORE ABOUT THESE BOOKS!
I began Bite Me! when I was a high school senior in late 2000. I didn't know at the time that the screwball vampire French Revolution comedy I was putting online for fun would be my gateway into a career as a professional comic book creator. The comic has been an enduring (and endearing) success long after the story's conclusion in 2004, and swiftly sold out two print editions.
I let it drop out of print for over a year so that I could plan a higher-quality anniversary release - offset-printed instead of digital, on heavier paper and in dimensions more likely to fit snugly into the average bookcase, with more professional layouts and added material! Everything has changed but the art and the story.
Who are the characters and what is the story? Read the comic now and find out! The whole book is online for your enjoyment - but pledge today and you'll get a copy you won't have to share with the whole internet.
And, if we surpass the initial campaign goal and reach $17,890 in funding...I'll include a brand new 11-page story. Keep reading below to learn more!
Outfoxed was created in 2011. I wrote a dark, 24-page little fable about a laundress and a fox and the pitfalls of ambition and prejudice, then I illustrated it and released it online. It took the internet by storm, with readers all over the world engaging in lively debates over the moral of the story.
Requests for a print edition have been incessant, and only increased after the story was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic. It's lucky that I planned to print one all along! Supporting this project guarantees that Outfoxed will exist in the edition it deserves - offset printed with a Pantone spot color, on heavy natural stock. This will be no ordinary floppy comic, printed cheaply for disposable reading - it's an art object that you'll want to keep on your shelf for years.
In 2010 I stumbled across the 1488 book Heidelberger Totentanz and fell in love with its gleeful weirdness. No dreary religious imagery here - just a bunch of cartoony medieval folks jigging with Death. Well, there are plenty of people we wouldn't mind seeing dead nowadays, and the idea of packing off some hatable modern stereotypes to a medieval demise was irresistible. I made a series of thirteen images, ending with a self-portrait (because fair's fair).
The original art sold like gangbusters, and I knew I wanted to produce a wee boutique art book of the images - accompanied by some appropriately chipper/ghoulish verse. Instead of producing a print-on-demand pamphlet to sell at a loss, this project will allow me to create a hardcover, 5x5" volume printed at top quality, and cover the licensing costs to include some of the most wonderful images from the medieval original.
As a contributor to this campaign, you'll be getting a 10% discount off cover price on all of the books you order. That's my thanks to you! After the campaign ends, the remaining copies will only be available at full price.
What else can I get by pledging?
Check out some of the super-sweet rewards packages listed to the right! Additional rewards include DRM-free, high-resolution PDFs of the books that you can read on any PDF-compatible device, at a considerable discount from what I'll be selling them for after the project closes.
I'm also creating a suite of three miniature art prints at 4x6", each commemorating one of the three books from the project. They'll be full-color, offset-printed, and framing ready. Or go nuts and use one as a very fancy postcard.
There will also be an exclusive, limited edition bookplate for Bite Me on which I'll do a little original drawing - stay tuned to project updates to see the final design.
Other rewards include book signings and sketches, which after the campaign will only be available if you buy directly from me at a show or pay an additional amount.
And there are a few high-level rewards for which you'll actually get original art of a subject of your choice. I rarely take on personal commissions, so this is an excellent opportunity to get a drawing from me for far less than you'd pay by contacting me directly. Keep it all to yourself or commission a gift for somebody you love (who has a morbid sensibility).
Where does all the money go?
Approximately 33% of the funding goal (just over $5000) goes to pay the state and federal taxes that will be levied against the money raised. American tax law doesn't count up-front production costs as an immediately deductible business expense, so at first I'll have to pay taxes on nearly all of it as if it were pure income. (As a freelancer, I file quarterly; that means taxes will be due just two months after the project is funded, before I even receive the printed books.)
Another 8-10% (between $1200 - $1500) will be deducted for Kickstarter and credit card processing fees. (Processing fees vary by credit card provider.)
What's left is approximately 60%, or $9000. All of that money (in fact, a little bit more; I'm low-balling so this campaign has a nice round number for its goal!) goes to cover book printing and shipping costs.
"Shipping" includes the cost of shipping from the printer to me, and then from me to you. I'll also be taking a slight loss on shipping, because you're so pretty.
Hey, we've surpassed the original funding goal! Now what?
Oh, my friends. This is the best.
WE ALREADY HIT $17,890...so the Bite Me! anniversary book will be expanded to include a brand new 11-page short story.
WE ALREADY HIT $20,000...so everybody who orders a copy of Danse Macabre gets an offset-printed version of my popular print set Skullhouettes.
IF WE HIT $25,000...everybody who orders a copy of Outfoxed gets a sweet fox-face embroidered patch!
More add-ons will be announced if we pass this amount!
So when will I receive all this fabulousness?
I've already quoted and selected a printer, and as of launch date am well into the pre-press process (and I've had some amazing help to guarantee a smooth and professional end result). Final print files will be sent to the printer as soon as funds are transferred into my business account. I've scheduled the print run to deliver books to my studio in mid-October, and shipped to you in time for an October 31st delivery (at least for those of you in North America). Happy Halloween!
Do I look good in this outfit?
Yes. You are the very image of taste and refinement.
