Hello everyone, my name is Dan Kozakewycz (if you're wondering, that's pronounced Koz-a-ke-witz. I think.) and I am a CAD monkey with a passion for cars. My Kickstarter project is about combining my skills and intrests to create bespoke, technical themed gifts and keepsakes for petrolheads.

My 'Engineered Art' idea is bespoke blueprint artwork which incorporates all of the things that make your car personal to you, ranging from the registration mark and VIN numbers, to the detailed technical specification and visual appearance of a heavily tuned competition car.

Once completed from the information (and photographs if required) submitted by you, the designs are laser cut into black anodised aluminium display plaques, which can be wall hung without a frame using the included hanging kit, like this:

OK, I admit, your wife probably isn't going to let you hang this sort of artwork over the marital bed, or on the mantelpiece amongst the family photos, but to go in the man cave, on your desk or to give a fellow car nut as a birthday or Christmas gift? Perfect! (In my own, totally unbiased view, at least...)

Here's the quick facts about the project:

  • I need to raise £15,000 in pre-orders by May 5th, to purchase the equipment I need to make these myself instead of outsourcing at huge cost.
  • As a backer, you are not donating to the cause, or investing in the company. Your money is pledge towards this project. In return for your pledge,I will create of my blueprint designs for you, drawn for your car, with all it's personal touches, laser etched on an A3 size black anodised aluminium plate.
  • Your card details are taken when you back the project, but your card isn't charged until May 5th and even then, only if I hit the target.
  • If I don't meet the target, you won't pay a penny (and I will probably cry!).
  • All rewards will be created individually after the project completion date, and will be delivered as soon as practically possible.
  • Please note that owing to the bespoke nature of the product, and the fact that I will have at least 150 to work through to pay all you amazing people back for your support, there will be some wait for your finished article to arrive. Unless otherwise stated, at least.

Still got your attention?

Awesome! Allow me to explain the product a bit more!

The Idea..

This idea started at work, when my colleagues and I were brainstorming on what to get our managing director and company founder, as a retirement present. As we are a drafting firm, I came up with the idea of doing a technical drawing of his cherished Austin Healey sports car, in the fashion of one of our in house drawings, with the company name and logo, and some of his favourite quotes in the notations. Obviously, just printing this off wouldn't have been that impressive, so I suggested that we could get the design engraved into a metal plaque and framed.

The idea was well received, and a few weeks later this turned up at the office!

The Prototype! (Not the reward one though)
The Prototype! (Not the reward one though)

The finish on it was better than I had originally imagined, although I'd clearly selected the wrong material as I was expecting matte finish anodised metal, not this glossy enamelled finish!

Needless to say, it was well received by my boss and it was commented how these designs would make great gifts and keepsakes for petrol heads.

This got the old grey matter working, and before long I'd made up a batch of new designs on black anodised sheets as Christmas presents for a few friends. Finally, instead of browsing through the usual array of cheap trinket gifts, I was finally able to give my brother (a Supra nut) the quality gift that I was always searching for, but could never find!

Examples

The sexy Ducati 848 Evo Corse SE. I'm not a bike guy, but I'd have one of these bikes just to look at!

For a friend of mine into his historic rallying, I made this Group 4 Escort Mk2, complete with his team's logo.

Two other friends participate in circuit racing with 'Locost' kit cars. Here's a pair of designs for their race cars. Note the differences in the design of the wheels, exhaust, cage and riveting. Same basic car, but each one personalised!

The Ariel Atom.

I actually showed this to the Ariel guys at the Autosport show in January as I wanted to get permission to use their logo on it. Bit of improvement work needed on it, but I'd like to think that might be a possibility in future!

Some experimentation with etched acrylic and LED edge lighting:

(Edge lit stuff isn't available as a reward as I haven't figure out how much it really costs yet, but if there's enough interest I can add it to the rewards.)

Some comments from those that have seen my work in the metal...

"What a brilliant concept, amazing detail and accuracy, I spent 15 minutes just staring at the BDA. A fantastic product! "

"It's actually MY car, the cage, the wheels, exhaust, rivets and everything. I wasn't expecting all that to match!"

"The photo's really do not do these things justice, they are so much better in the metal."

"I'd just like to say thank you for the above blue print and to emphasise what a quality product this is. Any petrol head will absolutely love the finished article and with personalisation options it delivers a unique result."

Why do I need funding?

At present, I'm having to outsource the manufacture of my blueprints, and this bumps up the cost dramatically, crucially above the point that most people are willing to pay! In addition, to secure the best prices I need to have these made in batches of 6, which results in long lead times for some customers especially if they are the first on the list on a given batch.

What I really need is my own desktop laser engraving machine, which will allow me to create my designs individually and on demand, with finer detail and at a significantly reduced cost. Essentially, it allows a novel, but poorly resolved idea to become a properly viable product.

REWARDS!

My rewards for project backers are mainly my blueprint designs, customised specifically to your supplied details.

First I create a standard 3 or four angle projection view of your chosen car (either from reference blueprints or customer supplied photos), over which standard technical data is added in fly out notes.

Where available, the names of the people behind the vehicles creation, designers, engineers, builders etc, are added to the drawing borders, along with the date of manufacture and any other significant information.

The amount of data added to the drawing depends on what is available or submitted, for one Aston Martin design I done recently, this got as nerdy as listing the ECC certification numbers for the exhaust noise and emissions! Yes, geeky I know, but when engineering type detail like that is available, it really adds to the feel of the design and looks great!

Customised

The main attraction is the personalisation options. Customisations such as the cars VIN numbers as the drawing and part numbers, registration marks added on the number plates, after-market modifications such as exhausts, wheels, altered ride heights altered on the drawings and custom parts and performance specifications for tuned vehicles.

If you think the vehicle you have created is what the manufacturer should have built in the first place, then this is the perfect expression!

Usually, visual upgrades will command a higher premium depending on the amount of time they take to create on top of the basic vehicle outlines. To Kickstarter backers I am offering these at the same basic price of £100!

NEW REWARDS!

For £50 you'll receive an A4 laser etched layout of your favourite racing circuit, complete with all the corner names and any other relevant data.

Here's a basic version of the legendary Nurburgring as an example!

Admittedly, missing some umlauts on a couple of the names!
Admittedly, missing some umlauts on a couple of the names!

I've added a second reward tier at £140, for which you'll receive on of the bespoke A3 size pieces for your car and one of these  track layouts for your favourite track!

If you so wish, I could include the side profile of your vehicle from the main blueprint along with your best laptime if known!

Upgrades!

In addition to the basic blueprints, which will come in a basic plain black packaging (custom packaging is so expensive!) I will be offering this upgraded 'gift pack' solution to a limited number of backers, with the blueprint coming packaged in a protective neoprene rubber sleeve, custom printed front and back with matching artwork.

Once it's job of protecting the metal is done, it then becomes it's own functional product in the form of a 15-16" laptop sleeve! Although the standard option will be matching blueprint graphics, the sleeve can be printed with a customer supplied image (photoshoot/action shots on track etc) at no additional charge.

Copyright issues?

I have spoken with a couple of manufacturers and IP lawyers about my idea. There is no copyright involved with the drawings themselves, for there to be copyright infringement I would actually have to build a car and attempt to pass it off as an original! The only thing I can't do is use the manufacturer logos, which is a shame. I looked into it and there might have been some defence as 'transformative art' etc but I think it's best just to avoid this minefield all together!

What cars can you do?

I can do a massive range, not only road cars but also a large range of current and past racing vehicles too, but it does depend on the right reference material being available to start from.

If there isn't any reference material, then I can use photos to create the whole drawing, however these need to be taken according to specific guidelines listed here, to avoid perspective issues.

Too close to the car = Lots of perspective = Bad!
Too close to the car = Lots of perspective = Bad!

Here's the same shot taken to the guidelines:

Long way back, using lots of zoom = Little perspective = Good!
Long way back, using lots of zoom = Little perspective = Good!

Obviously, given the requirement for photos to be taken from quite a distance, taking a top view photograph will be difficult so if there's no reference drawing for me to use, you'll probably have to make do without that view!

Three views still looks great!
Three views still looks great!

I have a list available of common models that I can do without photographs here, if you don't see your specific model listed please get in touch and ask as I may still be able to do it!

If, having backed my project, I can't fulfil your reward due to insufficient reference material, I WILL ISSUE A FULL REFUND. I would however ask that backers either check the listed models, or ask me first about more niche vehicles, to avoid disappointment!

Just cars?

No! I've mostly listed cars as I am a petrol head, they are what I know and love. I can however do blueprint style artwork for a wider range of vehicles, motorbikes, aircraft, marine, military or construction equipment. I can even do some fictional creations. Tumbler Batmobile anyone? (Available as a reward with the sleeve pictured above, nudge nudge, wink wink.)

Information for potential backers.

After the project completion date, I will send a survey out to all backers requesting the details of the blueprints they want drawn.

All rewards will need to be individually created after the project is successful, and this will obviously take some time depending on how many different designs are needed to meet the rewards. Obviously, for commonly requested models I can get the drawings done faster as I don't need to draw each one completely from scratch!

My rough projected timeline following completion.

  • Week 1 - Purchase the laser machine from Trotec UK.
  • Week 1 - Commence design work for 'Prototype' level rewards
  • Week 4 - Take delivery of laser machine.
  • Week 5 - Ruin lots of metal test pieces learning all the settings.
  • Week 7  - Start production of 'Prototype' level blueprints.
  • Week 8 - Delivery of 'Prototype' level blueprints.
  • Week 10 - 20 Delivery of remaining designs.

I will aim to deliver all rewards by the beginning of November 2014. I have allowed that much time assuming there are a wide variety of models to be done, however if the number of different models isn't that high, then I should be able to complete all the rewards a lot sooner. Given the expected amount of work involved, I will not commit to any work outside of Kickstarter until all backer rewards are delivered, this may mean I do nothing else during 2014. For that reason, if you think you might like one of these to give someone as a present at any point this year, I'd advise getting on board now and I will do my absolute best to make sure that you get it in time.

Thank you so much for looking at my project, you're amazing even  for reading this far. Hopefully you like my work and can help in bringing it to life!

Risks and challenges

I am already an experienced CAD draughtsman, so creating these drawings using my existing skills and available software is not a problem. Working from scratch purely on photographs I can usually create the basic four projection views in an evening.

Although obviously for each particular model I only have to draw the base template once, the potential number of different models I may have to do upon project completion may cause delays. I have allowed myself until the beginning of November to complete all rewards, although I will be working hard to have everything competed by September.

If I get overloaded, I have another guy I can call on for drawing work and if the funding target is greatly exceeded, I will be prepared to take some time off work to ensure all rewards are delivered as soon as possible.

Another issue is learning how to use a new piece of equipment. I have been assured by the manufacturer that it is very simple and if I'm able to do the design work, the hardest part is done. Apparently it's no more complicated than hitting 'print'!
