Native WebView AIR Native Extension
With the ever growing need for a stable WebView in AIR we are going to extend our NativeWebView ANE to Windows and macOS (OSX)
The NativeWebView extension has been available for 2 years now and is used in a large number of mobile applications. The ANE is designed to be a replacement version of the StageWebView provided as part of the AIR SDK, but much more useful. The simple API has allowed many mobile developers to quickly bring rich web content to their mobile AIR applications.
- HTML5 Video;
- Browser View Controller;
- Touch events;
- Capture BitmapData screenshot;
- Transparent background;
- Additional page controls: auto play, background colour;
Lately we have had many requests to extend the functionality of this extension to the desktop, including Windows and macOS. While we are aware there are solutions available, our customers have requested we look into extending our extension to keep a consistent cross-platform API and keep the extension in our support program.
So we are now looking to bring this same API to the desktop, macOS and Windows, and with it the reliability, stability and support that is expected from an ANE built by distriqt.
We have started development but it is a massive undertaking to bring a stable ANE to the desktop environment so we need your help to be able to dedicate the many hours required to be able to provide a quality extension.
The goals for the development will be to tackle one operating system platform at a time. The first platform will be selected by the backers and is the initial aim of the project. If we then reach our further goal we'll be able to bring the ANE to both Windows and macOS.
We would like as much input on the requirements of this ANE from the community so we plan to be very open to our backers and use your requirements for this ANE as the development schedule.
We are a development studio based in Australia, and have been developing mobile applications for several years both natively and using AIR. We have now developed a large collection of native extensions and have become very experienced in extending the AIR runtime.
You can see the extensions we have developed on our site: https://airnativeextensions.com
We believe this makes us very capable of developing this extension and producing a high quality library.
Risks and challenges
Obviously our major challenge is being able to spend enough time developing and testing the extension, along with being able to gather enough test hardware and operating systems (Windows in particular) to be able to test the extension.
This project will allow us to purchase test hardware and software and to be able to dedicate all important time to creating a quality product, with well written documentation.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
