About this project
Wally isn't yet another wallet case, but rather a handcrafted Italian-leather pocket that clings to the back of your iPhone to secretly and securely hold what you need to have close at hand. He's the handsome grab-and-go solution.
Now instead of a bulky case or a wallet with an iPhone pocket, Wally clings directly to the back of your iPhone with micro-suction. This high-tech material gives Wally a grip like a gentleman: strong and secure, without leaving behind any tackiness. Micro-suction is awesome for naked iPhones, but adheres to glossy or slick cases only -- which is why we'll also include Alternahesive not just for the backers who request it, but for EVERY BACKER! Thank you, backers, for getting us to our Stretch Goal and beyond!
Have you hacked together a way to carry cards with your iPhone? Or maybe you bought a wallet/case thingy but it limits your iPhone access? We hear you... So we literally went back to the drawing board and crafted a totally new way to carry the essentials:
- Slim Accommodates the 3 cards you carry most
- Smart Micro-suction securely attaches without being sticky
- Discreet Pull-tab action conceals your contents
- Handcrafted Made in the USA with premium Italian leather
iPhone, camera, cards and ID or cash – all combined and ready to go. Our leather craftsman in Florida, Tim Kennedy, has been a great collaborator in getting the construction as thin as possible, while comfortably accommodating up to 3 cards (PRO TIP: use apps like Lemon to handle the rest). Of course, you can still carry a Costanza wallet and let Wally hold what you use the most – business cards, cash, metro card – right where you want it, and out of sight until you need it.
Instead of holding a wallet up to your ear, just hold your iPhone. Crafted using premium, vegetable-tanned leather from Tuscany, Wally makes your iPhone more comfortable to hold. The vegetable-tanned leather wears beautifully over time, just like your favorite leather wallet. Luckily, Wally just looks like a handsome leather iPhone skin.
Instead of advertising the contents of your wallet, Wally keeps your cards and cash hidden. Access your stash simply by pulling on Wally’s integrated pull-tab; pushing your cards back in retracts the tab.
Wally is available in Ninja Black or Cowboy Brown, custom made either for iPhone 5 or iPhone 4/4S (photos of each Wally on our website). Simply select the Wally reward you want, and that's what you'll receive. We have everything we need to make Wally, but need your help to go into production. Wally will be:
- Made with premium Italian leather in the US
- Of the highest quality and craftsmanship
- The slimmest grab-and-go solution for iPhone
You can help by pledging or sharing Wally with friends. If Wally's not your type but you like what we're trying to do, we could use your help to get the word out! Funding is all or nothing: If you have a moment, please help us reach our goal by sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Reddit, on your blog, at the coffee shop, in line at the club (are you sure you couldn't use a Wally?)...
Risks and challenges
Wally is a relatively easy to manufacture product. We've done a pilot run with the actual materials so we can run tests to minimize surprises and work out the kinks. We are seeking the funding needed to cover the cost of the dies, leather, micro-suction material, and Made-in-the-USA manufacturing. Our goal amount is the break-even cost to manufacture our first production run (plus the Kickstarter and Amazon fees, as much as 10%). We've set a realistic goal to cover the costs to launch a product that we truly feel is great! We've loved using our Wallys and want to share 'em with you!
We have many years of experience in creating iPhone and iPod accessories for brands like DLO and Philips. We have many reliable contacts in the industry. Check out a small fraction of what we've done over on our website – http://www.distilunion.com/pages/pastfolio
As for Kickstarter experience, we learned a lot on our successful campaign for Snooze, the alarm dock with big snooze bar for iPhone.
The biggest lesson: Don't promise things that are beyond your control. The only thing not in our control with Wally (aside from the US Postal Service) is the manufacturing; though we're confident in Tim to deliver, we've limited our risk by lining up backup craftsmen. If we must switch gears and go with another leatherworker, Wally will be delayed – but not more than a month because our run is such a small number.
Thanks for reading all of this! Or skimming it. Or scrolling to the bottom to see what the last word is. We'd do the same thing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
It will take up to 15 days for funds to clear Kickstarter, and no more than 3 weeks to manufacture this first limited-edition run. We aim to be delivering the first pledges no later than early April (no foolin')... The second batch of Wallys should ship in May. PLEASE NOTE: International shipping is available and can take up to 7 weeks via USPS First Class.
Once the leather is diecut and stitched, it's formed into a subtle pocket. From our tests (view a shake-test here: http://t.co/lCYYqprd) we can recommend carrying no more than 3 credit cards or a similar sized load:
ID + debit card + business card 2 plastic cards + a folded bill
4 business cards
Subway card + folded bills
You get the idea :) While the leather can be stretched to accomodate a bit more, you’ll then find carrying a smaller load will be a loose fit. Just carry what you need; of course, you can still carry your Costanza wallet and let Wally hold whatever you require immediate at-hand access to.
While we intentionally ditched the case to make Wally the slimmest solution imaginable, he can also grab tightly to cases that have a slick or gloss-finish surface – however, you'll need to request Alternahesive™ in the Backer Survey to also use Wally with matte/rubberized/soft-touch cases.
So far, these top cases from the Apple Store pass the Wally micro-suction test: Incase Snap Case, Speck CandyShell, Adopted Lens Case, Tech21 Impact Mesh, Uncommon.
Sadly, Wally will never ever work with squishy silicone cases.
Yes! During the pledge process, Kickstarter will ask if you're in the US. If you're not, click to add $10 for the cost of international shipping. If you're in Canada, manually add just $5 to your pledge total.
PLEASE NOTE: International shipping via USPS First Class can take up to 7 weeks.
Yes -- but not until you want him to :) Micro-suction is like thousands of tiny octopus suckers that grab on tight to slick surfaces, and can be easily removed (and reapplied and removed, over and over) without leaving behind any stickiness. If he starts to lose his grip, simply take Wally off and use pieces of clear Scotch tape to “clean” the micro-suction by covering the surface with tape and then removing it. That’s it.
Hm, that's not really a question, but we have an answer: Just use Apple's https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-iphone/id376101648… to find 'em both. Then punch the thief in the throat. Then run.
Nervous because you lose stuff all the time? Same answer -- Wally's great for losers! He's also great for globetrotters, for when you need to keep your ID and passport in separate places.
The three of us did the entire thing on our iPhones: Adam did the editing in Premiere. Lindsay did the voiceover. Nate did the voice of the gorilla. Our goal was just to show Wally in action and let him speak for himself, nothing fancy or too time-consuming or costly to make... We're constantly inspired by Casey Neistat's work http://caseyneistat.com
By "limited edition" we don't mean to imply that Wally won't ever be made again. The aim of Wally's Kickstarter isn't to sell and sell and sell as many as people order. What if we didn't limit the number, sold tens of thousands -- but weren't prepared to actually produce that many? Project timelines could be pushed back, quality could suffer, backers could be let down. That's what we're trying to avoid. Instead, our initial quantities are limited because that's what we're confident we can deliver.
We want to make more Wallys in the future, especially since he's been so well received – Kickstarter is how you can be among the first to have a Wally.
