I have just accepted a position as Visiting Artist for the Winter Banff Musicians in Residence Program from January 7th to February 8th, 2019. Banff’s Centre for Arts and Creativity is located in Alberta, Canada. Banff exists to provide artists with a setting that allows them to make their own unique contributions to society. This Winter, I will be at Banff working to bring my project proposal, disemBody, to life. I have been awarded $2,214.30 in financial aid.
disemBody is a concert series featuring a collection of new pieces based on the negative impact the cosmetic industry has placed on society and perception of beauty. I will be showcasing disemBody at different venues paired with an informative video featuring interviews that further explain the importance of the issue.
All proceeds of performances will go to “The Body Positive”, a national organization that works towards its ultimate goal of ending the harmful consequences of negative body image: eating disorders, depression, anxiety, cutting, suicide, substance abuse, and relationship violence.
There are many efforts and fees behind the scenes that go into having a successful outcome of projects like this. The art and performance industry can be competitive and unforgiving. A musician needs to have professional recordings displaying the highest level of excellence in order to stand out and be taken seriously by possible venues, future employers, and potential collaborators.
Because this is a project with an important cause, I believe disemBody should be performed all over the world with the intention of promoting change. In order to convince different venues to feature disemBody, the recordings must be made with adequate equipment.
