Chasm is Coming to Switch, PAX West 2018, Instruction Booklet

We’re coming up on the 1-month anniversary of Chasm’s launch on PS4, Vita, and Steam, and we’ve all been thrilled with the response. We’ve gotten personal notes from people telling us how Chasm brought back memories from their childhood and others letting us know their pride at defeating the final boss of the game. Probably my favorite was this bit of fan art:

We also heard from a lot of people that they really want to play Chasm on their Nintendo Switch. Tom Spilman was the obvious person to discuss this with. Not only was he responsible for the pixel perfect port of Chasm on Vita, but he also ported several other games to Nintendo Switch including Axiom Verge. Since he was so familiar with our code base and the hardware, he was able to get things up and running super quickly, and I’m excited to announce that it will be coming to Switch this year! (We’re looking into special Kickstarter backer pricing for the Switch version like we did with PS4, but it’s not looking like it’ll be possible.) If you’re going to PAX, you’ll be able to play it on the show floor in booth 6917!

In addition to all of the feedback about childhood memories and Nintendo Switch, we also got a lot of suggestions of ways to improve the game. Probably the biggest issues people had was with the backdash speed and cooldowns after using the sword. We addressed these in version 1.03 along with a host of other tweaks and improvements. You can find the full list of fixes to the Steam version here.

You may notice at the top of this list is a beta version of new Class modes, including Thief, Mage, and Warrior. This is really only a beginning in terms of ideas we have for adding replayability and new game modes. We hope to be able to announce some of those new game modes in the coming months.

Instruction Booklet

One other thing to mention is that the official Chasm Instruction Booklet is now available for backers! It contains everything from control diagrams, to stat descriptions, to tips and tricks. Backers can grab a PDF copy now on their Humble downloads page (please see this post for more information on how to access your Humble downloads). Please note we are still working on the (much larger) Chasm Compendium for our $50+ backers, and expect to have more news on that coming up soon.

Thanks for your continued support, and we'll be in touch again soon!

@BSL Thanks for the feedback! We are still tweaking and refining based off player feedback, so we really appreciate you taking the time to let us know.

@Chris Lord - Switch was never offered, not sure what the issue is here with the discounted keys, that's on Nintendo being cheap *******s not Bit Kid. (Nintendo controls how keys are sold and at what pricing)

Who else would bother to obtain a then offer $3 PSN codes (at cost no less with no markup for financial gain), I thought that was awesome of them. (remember this game was PC ONLY when it was announced, you knew that going in and they have fulfilled all promises, and have gone beyond expectations, to major kudos to Bit Kid for doing that)

And **** Playtonic. They ignored many issues on their KS campaign and did NOT make right many of the things myself and many of the backers had issues with, I'll NEVER support one of their projects ever again.

Hi guys, thanks for fixing the issues that have cropped up.

Only one gripe. Making the dagger use 2 MP instead of 1. (I know, I know, it was over powered, but I mean come on, I'd rather have it do a little less damage, rather then have it take more MP)

That thing got me through a ton a places I wouldn't have survived through otherwise and ended up with 5-10 MP when I had less then 20 HP left, adding that new MP usage to the knife makes it less of a utility weapon and forces you to focus in on backtracking now or grinding for MP (assuming you can get it without dying first).

So please either make the knife usage 1MP again or add MP regeneration at the save points (or slow regeneration to your character, heck Alucard could do it)

When I finished the game off (coming from 1.02 -> 1.03) and noticed that I was less than happy to see one of my essential damage dealers had been gimped because of it's ability to nerf certain sections of the game (and bosses) which I found to be unfair. (and honestly how many people were good enough to kill bosses with hand weapons w/o spamming the dagger for no-hit kills....seriously???)

Enjoyed it, even with it's faults, (and why no way to get back to the beginning of the final level w/o a scroll?!? Especially when there's still things to be done in-game...) recommended to people, just wished there was a reason to replay it. (and less of a reason now that the dagger is gimped in the latest patch)

      Thanks

@Caleb Bott I'm really sorry for the inconvenience, it seems some of the Humble keys have been hacked over the past few years. I just submitted a support request on your behalf to have the stolen key revoked and a new one issued. They should respond within 24 hrs, but please let me know if you have any further trouble.

    5. Caleb Bott on

Thsnks, but unfortunately I can't use my key! Humble Bundle claims it has already been used by another user, which could mean it was stolen or something. Any ideas?

@Caleb Bott Humble is fulfilling the PC/Steam version for us so I just had an email sent to you with a link to your downloads page. Please let me know if you have any issues!

I still didn't get my steam key for this game! Is it still possible for me to get one?

Throwing in my vote for some sort of physical release of any sort also, all the cool kids are doing it.

      nevermind my last question.

So can we switch our ps4 key for a switch key?

    11. Discord Games LLC Creator on

Thanks for the feedback on the physical release! Our biz guy is investigating a few possible avenues for those, so we'll let you know what we figure out.

@Chris I'm very sorry for the frustration, we're looking into what we can do to help.

Will happily double dip for Switch. :) As Will says below, a physical release, even just a limited edition via Limited Run, Indiebox, etc. would also be awesome.

I imagine I'm not the only one who would be very interested in a Limited Run Games physical release for Switch if you guys have no plans for a normal retail release. I'm generally okay with Steam games because they're large enough that they would have to do something astronomically risky to end up closing down, but I'm far more wary about consoles. Nintendo in particular just proved this year that they are willing to completely close an eShop on an older console that tied downloads to a single physical console (with the closing of the Wii shop), so I still aim to buy physical whenever possible for console versions. LRG's model for Switch games with a timed pre-order period is a great one in my opinion, because it lets all those interested get their physical copy without the seemingly massive investment that a full retail print run requires of a developer.

I'm sure there are great reasons behind it, but no Switch keys for backers, nor even backer pricing I think marks this as the last time I contribute to a game on Kickstarter/IndieGoGo. It just isn't worth it, stuff like this keeps happening over and over again - multi-year delays, which of course then makes the original pledges less relevant, then if a release comes, it's more than likely not on the platform you want anymore. So few developers make good in this situation (Playtonic is the only one I can think of). Meanwhile everyone that didn't back gets the benefit of your contribution and you lose out. I'm sure you guys don't want it to be like that, but it is, so I think I'm out (I mean, this doesn't matter to you guys, but maybe the sentiment will be heard elsewhere, or affect some future action). Maybe one day I'll make the time to play this game on PC, but it's really unlikely to be honest :(

      Thanks all!

@Daryl Putnam You should have DRM-Free Win/Mac/Linux downloads for version 1.03 on there. We've had some reports of needing to log in and out of Humble before things will show up. Please let us know if you still can't find it and we can contact Humble support.

@Richard Courtenay I'll speak to our biz guy about it soon, I don't even know all the details myself yet! We'll do whatever we possibly can :)

How do I get my DRM-free copy? I logged into Humble and all it shows is a link to get a Steam DRM key.

Would love this! Would also love a physical release! :D

Fantastic news. I'll be triple-dipping on this game now. Have it on PC/PS and will definitely be picking it up again on Switch. You guys are going to make a ton of sales.

    19. Richard Courtenay on

Definitely keen on backer Switch pricing. Would be keen to know why its not possible as projects have been able to do Switch keys in the past. Might not be super cheap, but surely there can be some saving.

Alternatively maybe do a pre-order discount. Obviously that'd be available to non backers, but better than nothing.

      This is amazing news!
Finally I'll be able to play it on my main console!
