Soul Saga - Updates 6 and 7

Merry Christmas!

I hope you are having some great holidays. Santa Cake stayed up all night programming in the new Soul Saga character and rendering out some video for your enjoyment.

This has been a huge month in the unveiling of Soul Saga's art assets, and things aren't even close to slowing down yet.  There have been 2 updates at disastercake.com since our last Kickstarter update.  One reveals the new Garen design, the other our new, mysterious ally of Mithos.  This update will combine both updates for your convenience.

Garen Redesign

I am trying my best to squeeze the “Garen’s Saga” stretch goal into Soul Saga’s budget. So far it’s looking pretty hopeful that it can happen. Through Garen’s Saga you will be able to experience first hand that Garen is a very dynamic antagonist. To help portray this, I feel that Garen’s design needed to be a bit more down to earth and personable so that it was easier to relate to him. Our character artist, Aiko-san, has stripped him of his old heavy armor, and removed the helmet so you can see his face and emotions. He’s also got a neat arm!

Ai

Ai is the newest member of Mithos’ team whose visual design was imagined by Aiko-san. I could describe her with words… but instead we've created a video for you.

The video contains a segment of a song created by Steven Velema (Surasshu). He is our second composer on Soul Saga at the moment.

Switched Forum Software

Launching the forum was probably the best idea Soul Saga fans had. At first I was skeptical, but with some experimenting I have found a way to avoid the spam bots and minimize the need for moderating. I love connecting with everyone on the forum. However, the forum software I chose, Vanilla Forums, had some possible issues in the foreseeable future.

After looking more into Vanilla, it became quickly apparent that it would be a bad idea in the long run to stick with them. There is almost no support for the product unless you pay for their over priced hosting which is a whopping $50 a month for a limited amount of page views! Considering the fact that they switched from being a free opensource program to paid support only bodes ill for the future of their open source version. So I researched what the most powerful opensource and inexpensive forum software out there is, and I found phpBB. It does everything we need and everything we want straight out of the box. The new forum has only been up for a day and I’m already amazed at how much more power I have in controlling them. There’s also a HUGE community with help scattered across the internet that almost always results in some reasonable way to get the desired effects we need.

So long story short: you’ll have to register again at the new forums at forums.disastercake.com. I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but I promise this one is our permanent home!

$15 Playstation Tier Needs To Retake Survey

I would say one of the hardest things about working with Kickstarter’s backend is that I don’t have the ability to edit or send out second surveys. You get 1 survey per tier, and only 1 survey. So you can imagine how quickly my jaw dropped to the floor when I realized I left a very important question out of the $15 Playstation tier: “Vita or PS4?” I tried to remedy it by sending out messages to everyone, but in over 2 months less than 50% of people have replied to the message. I think most people on Kickstarter don’t even realize there’s a messaging system. And even if everyone did reply to the message, it would have taken FOREVER to deal with browser loading windows to compile nearly 1,400 individual responses by hand.

So I contacted Kickstarter and they are going to reset the responses everyone in the $15 Playstation tier gave already. This will allow me to resend out the survey correctly this time. If you are in this tier and have already filled out the survey, please do it again once you get the message to do so. All data that has already been collected from that tier will be wiped. This survey should be sent out again next week sometime.

If you are in the $15 Playstation tier and see my message in your inbox, you can ignore that and just take the new survey instead.

No other tiers will be affected by this. However, There are still hundreds of people who haven’t responded to their surveys. Please take the survey if you haven’t already. You’ll know if you haven’t by the banner at the top of your Kickstarter page that says that a project requires your response. I know this banner is there on the desktop version of the site at least.

Kickstarter Fan Art Applicants Get Beta Keys

If you submitted Fan Art during the Kickstarter, you are entitled to a beta key as per my promise! If you would like this beta key, please send me a private message on Kickstarter with  a link to the art piece that you did for the Fan Art event.

What Do You Think?

As always, I love to hear your thoughts.  What do you think of Garen?  Who, or what, do you think Ai is?

I still support the game and look forward to playing it, but the Garen redesign was a big step back for me. He looked imposing before, now just sort of generic. Honestly a bit saddened that every redesign has not been an improvement for my tastes. Again, you seem nice and want the game to do well, but I was really excited by initial look and feel it had. I just do not feel that enthusiastic after all these changes.

    2. Creator william robertmcglone on February 9, 2014

abbott that is your opinion its not an ugly style i like it,,,,,,,,but i respect that opinion

    3. Creator Grant (WZX) on January 30, 2014

Reminds me of Zelda Skyward Sword, not realistic like Twilight Princess but also not cartoony like Windwaker was. Sorry it's an ugly style and prefer games to either be one or the other. Still hope the game turns out good. Just the problems with kickstarter :/

    4. Creator TheChosenOne on January 10, 2014

I think his hair colour needs to change. He is so boring looking now. So typical.

    5. Creator love bump on January 9, 2014

can't say i like the Garen Redesign

    6. Creator BenSwitzer on December 29, 2013

AI's concept is pretty cool FYi, I did put this in my survey, I added 10$ for a PS4 code.

    7. Creator J. C. SweetZ on December 29, 2013

Garen reminds me of Gatsu (Guts) from Berserk now. He has all the characteristics; weird/fake arm, obnoxiously long sword, cape, tall, armor. If his arm can shoot beams or something, Garen could pass for his son. I'm not complaining, I personally love both. Just pointing out what I observe.

Ai reminds me of a mix of nina and ryu from Breath of Fire 5. I do like her design a lot tho. curious to know her story.

Looking good so far. I personally liked Garen with the armor on. But please, for heaven's sake, don't do the whole 'knock off helmet and see my true intentions' thing... It's beneath you. If anything, I would rather see him how he was before the armor, what made him decide to don the armor and have him stay in it.

    8. Creator Dan on December 29, 2013

      Ai looks amazing.
It seems like every update I read gets me a little more pumped for this game.

    9. Creator Ron Au on December 26, 2013

Ahh, so Ai is like Vincent from FFVII :)

    10. Creator Vincent on December 26, 2013

@Disastercake: love how you're keeping us informed as to the progress on the game. I like Ai and her transformation. Very curious as to what role she'll be playing in the game.
In regards to Garen's redesign: I don't think that this should be his final design. It just isn't imposing enough. Though his previous design was a bit over the top evil, especially for somebody that would have been a guild leader, you did immediately realize that this guy was a badass and that you'd have to give everything you had to beat him. Exdeath 2.0. On the other hand, you could use this design for a generic bandit luitenant and it would fit. I do like the arm and his clothes but I feel that he needs to be either more muscular/taller or wear some heavier armor.

    11. Creator Zak Anthony Kalles on December 26, 2013

Ahhhhh! I'm loving all the redesigns! When I first backed the game I was doing so because of how much fun it sounded like it will be to play, but I didn't exactly like all the character designs (some were pretty good). I'm loving the changes though and I'm really looking forward to playing it.

    12. Creator Leon Schönberg on December 26, 2013

@Disastercake: I really love the way you're handling the whole Soul Saga thing. I was really excited about all the changes you did to the characters so far because, I'm thinking about a story right now on my own and it's incredible to see that you are determined to change so much if it helps developing the story and the characters, ESPECIALLY under these circumstances, considering the big community you have to satisfy. I love the new character designs so far and I am excited to see what the future of Soul Saga brings us! Keep up the good work!

    13. Creator Duncan A. Doherty on December 26, 2013

@Naser: Those two ideas (overlord and drifter) are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Something to keep in mind.

    14. Creator Naser on December 26, 2013

Not liking the Garen redesign. Doesn't look like the leader of a legion of evil monsters. Looks more like a drifter!
Still excited for the game though.

    15. Creator Brett Morehouse on December 25, 2013

      O_o

More and more, I can't wait to play this on my Wii U. Ai looks fantastic, and I do believe she will be an instafave for me. Plus, she's on Mithos' team, so she's a goodguy!

Garen looks interesting. Oddly, he looks a tad, er, clumsy in the third image.

    16. Creator Tcrew on December 25, 2013

ai is cute also for the ps version im wondering if you guys had any trouble getting it classified? its a whole process of bureaucratic BS for australia

    17. Creator Edward T. on December 25, 2013

Ai is absolutely adorable. As for Garen, hmm… let's insert the Incredibles' "No Cape" joke here *LOL*

Jokes aside, I think as of right now, I think Garen looks like a crook on the run or at most, a bandit leader. I feel as a major antagonist, he should look more charismatic. I personally think swept back hair with a neater and more vibrant looking cape would look better.

That aside, seeing Garen swinging his sword kinda remind of Caim in that one scene from Drakengard 2.

    18. Creator Disastercake on December 25, 2013

All of the old designs will make an appearance in the game somewhere in some way. ;)

    19. Creator Jon Carter on December 25, 2013

I too really like the Garen redesign, but I already miss the armor. Is there anyway he can end up in that armor later? Perhaps when/if he is driven to being "pure" evil? Or like Michael Connell suggested, use the armor for a boss design? That armor just looks too epic the disappear. :)

    20. Creator Michael Connell on December 25, 2013

Garen's new design looks good, though I kind of miss the armor as I thought it was a good boss design. Any chance that could be used for a boss monster like a dullahan or death knight?
Like both of Ai's designs, the first one kind of gives me Kaworu Nagisa vibe and the second form kinda reminds me of the Blue Beetle.

Looking forward to hearing more about this game from you guys. A Merry Merry Christmas to you all!!

    21. Creator Disastercake on December 25, 2013

      @Tenouchi - I'm glad you like her! =D P.S. Love your name. ;)

    22. Creator Tenouchi on December 25, 2013

Ai looks lovely in both forms. My new favourite character for sure!

    23. Creator Disastercake on December 25, 2013

@Orsen - Thank you for all of the insight! I'm really glad you like Ai and Garen! I think you're getting the idea I'm trying to go for perfectly.

@VKBest - I believe I did ask for the different regions in your survey tier. The only one getting reset is the $15 Playstation tier.

    24. Creator Orson Cream on December 25, 2013

      @edzieba -- I think the pose/stance makes her creepier and suits her well~ :3

@Nikko -- Ooo, interesting idea! Though having read the Disastercake idea, I have to say I like theirs better 'x3

      Speaking of..

@Disastercake -- Noo, the wings don't *have* to look like they're responsible for her flight, I love it the way it is! n__n As I said to edzieba, I feel it makes it creepier. It suits her well and makes her more mysterious seeming.

I like the idea of streaks but maybe something more 'blue-grey' to indicate advanced age but not yet so old as to be greying?

... Or whatever you want :P

@NG14916 -- ;____; Nuuuu, don't change his hair colour it suits him so well!

I have no problem with more detailed hair, though :P

I agree with @Duncan, he doesn't feel like a hobo to me, he looks distinguished but weary, like a knight or warrior whose seen too much and now bears a heavy, mental/emotional burden.

@Franggio -- Waah, as soon as I saw her I wondered if she was just adorable or also insane/unbalanced, then she started shaking/holding her head and I felt excited to have possibly been right, then she transformed and now she's amazing and I love her~ :D

Not sure if I like her or Garen more... She's incredibly awesome, but Garen has an appealing design and backstory. Disastercake succeeded quite well in making him personable, already I find myself viewing him in the light of the man-of-good-intentions swept along into his own form of madness as he tries to better himself and the world.

    25. Creator VkBest on December 25, 2013

Oh! forget my last message, I just saw I filled a survey months ago! will you reset too?

    26. Creator Franggio C. Hogland on December 25, 2013

Nice nice, so only I that think Ai is dressed in a straightjacket? You can't trick us!

    27. Creator VkBest on December 25, 2013

I pledged 25$, but i have a doubt, don´t you need to ask for psn region all tiers? I think psn codes are different from several regions (USA, EU, etc).

    28. Creator Disastercake on December 25, 2013

Thanks Deaftard and Jamie! =D I'm glad you like your present. ;)

    29. Creator Jamie Dutton on December 25, 2013

Wow, that was the best Christmas update/present I've gotten yet! Ai looks amazing! So cute and innocent then BAM! Oh great I feel more fan art coming on ><; Love the music, btw!

    30. Creator DeafTard on December 25, 2013

best christmas present ever!!!! Keep up the great work Mikey and whomever else is working with the Disastercake Soul Saga crew!

    31. Creator Disastercake on December 25, 2013

@Boris - You'll see more about the arm in the story. These are the highest poly these models are going to get considering the platforms we are porting to. We're trying to stay optimized without wasting money on LOD (level of detail) versions. I'd say the Kickstarter models are lower poly than these are, though. Once everything is in the game and running around I think you will be more forgiving of the small imperfections. Seeing them against a gray background causes the eye to notice a lot more.

@Jonatan - I will resend out that survey next week probably. Kickstarter wanted me to make the announcement first before they delete the old survey and allow me to resend it.

    32. Creator Jonatan on December 25, 2013

I am in that $15 tier, I do not however see any survey?

    33. Creator Boris on December 25, 2013

Ai looks pretty awesome. Love the transformation.
Garen looks good. Why is his left arm looking brown? Is he partially corrupted by Ink or something?
What I do hope is that the final graphics will have higher polygon counts.

    34. Creator Disastercake on December 25, 2013

@Team Weaver and Duncan - Aivi has quite a lot on her plate. She's working a full time job as a music teacher, and does contract work for Cartoon Network and a couple other games. I have to bring on at least 2 composers (if not more) to help her finish the sound track. If we're lucky she'll have enough time to do about 50% of the OST. I like Surasshu's work. He brings a much needed variety to the table with a very professional sound. He also works closely with Aivi on many of her projects.

@Duncan - I was thinking of giving some gray or light brown streaks through the hair. I may play with the texture later on.

@NG14916 - I... have no idea what you are talking about. I'm kind of speechless at that comment.

@Nikko - The thing with the helmet coming off is that it's been done in sooooo many stories. The "unveiling that the antagonist has a personality" trope. I plan on having Garen develop alongside the rest of the story, like Fou-Lu from Breath of Fire 4.

@Colin - No. I announced about 3 months ago that it wouldn't be economically feasible for the project. Sony has me under tight NDA, so I can't say much. But I assure you I'm not happy about having to cancel that feature.

@edzieba - Do the wings have to look that way? I think it's cool that she looks like she floats with power, and the wings are more aesthetic.

@Brett - Thank you! =D I'm glad you like it.

    35. Creator TeamWeaver on December 25, 2013

@Duncan: No, Mike most likely used a free track to help set the mood for the character.

    36. Creator Duncan A. Doherty on December 25, 2013

I love the new Garen design, but his hair is a bit hard to distinguish from the cape (black on black). That's an easy fix, if you feel the need to do so. I don't think he looks like a hobo at all, and unless I'm mistaken, his hair is not done up in dreads, so no idea what NG s talking about.

As for Ai, I'm not sure what I just saw, but whatever it was it was cool :). I was under the impression Aivi was going to be the sole composer on this project; is that no longer the case? Just curious.

    37. Creator TeamWeaver on December 25, 2013

Dang, Mike. Ai looks so freaking BA! Are you using the glow asset from the Unity store? I freaking love that thing!

    38. Creator Colin Elliott on December 25, 2013

is the game going to be cross-buy on PS4/Vita? for some reason I was thinking it was

    39. Creator Brett Schwartz on December 25, 2013

Ai looks awesome and that transformation was fantastic.

    40. Creator NG14916 on December 25, 2013

Garen looks a bit too much like a hobo right now with his dreadlocks and tattered cape. I suggest making his hair a bit more detailed and changing the color so that you can see it. Right now his hair is hard to see against his cape. I think red would work well.

    41. Creator Nikko Gomez on December 25, 2013

Then again, if that just going to be his model for the Garen saga and not the main saga, then it looks pretty good.

    42. Creator Nikko Gomez on December 25, 2013

IMHO, I think Garen would be much better with the helmet on then the helmet gets knocked off at some point. I just think it would have built more suspense and tension if you kept the villain's true emotions hidden and then reveal them at the right time.

    43. Creator edzieba on December 25, 2013

A suggestion for Ai: rotate her to be leaning slightly more forward. At the moment, her wings seem completely disconnected from her ability to float.
