Soul Saga - Update 5

Hello, friend! Today I have 2 Soul Saga related surprises for you: the redesign of Max and a vote for the redesign of Taro.

Max’s redesign captures his longing to be closer to nature. He has adopted a bird which houses itself on his head. Max has a very cute appearance normally, but when he’s ready to get serious the helmet slams down to sport his angry face.

For those that didn't know, Toki means rabbit in Korean. So it should come as no surprise that the original design of the Toki were suppose to look more like rabbits. Unfortunately, the feedback I got from the original design was that they ended up looking more like goats. So Aiko-san has come up with an adorable design for the Toki that I have given the thumbs up for. Now we just need your help in deciding which combination of common Toki features Taro will have! Below you will find variations for the tail, hair, horns, outfit, body, and color.

Teal and Purple popped out most to Aiko-san as colors that could possibly fit Taro. Which do you think is best with the current team line up?

We also have the option for the poof of fur at the top of the neck, or no poof. To poof or not to poof, isn't that always the question?

This one is probably the most important choice of them all. We all know a cute anime creature's pride and glory is it's adorable tail; but which one will Taro be wiggling around on his adventures?

As we all know, Taro suffers from an infliction that has rendered him with demon-like horns. Originally we went with 2 tiny little points, but now we are considering 2 large and curving horns, or a single pointy horn. What do you think?

And finally... the icing on the cake: Taro's outfit. We have the option of something similar to the original (left), or we can try something fresh and new (right). It's up to you!

Another Kickstarter To Check Out

The past month has been a bad dry spell for Kickstarter games.  In fact, this one is from a backer of ours that has put an incredible amount of polish into their presentation.  I'm actually amazed that it's not getting more attention.  I think that the recent launches of the big consoles are pulling some attention away from the indie games on here.

If you like cute puzzle platformers with great production value then I think you'll like "So Many Me", made by the guys who worked on some popular indie titles like A.R.E.S. (a really good super metroid inspired game).  They only have 2 days left!

I wanna say that if I have one problem with Max's new design is that he looks a lot like a Solider Heartless from Kingdom Hearts:

Another comparison would be Opposie Armor from the same game:

I'm not sure if that was intentional, but I prefer the old robotic design, which felt more distinct and original.

@Mana: Probably not the right place for this, but I'd also be interested in people who do modeling and art as well. It's so hard to find people and the people I've contacted to help haven't been the friendliest folks. Don't understand why so many artists are so flaky, but if you can direct to some good ones, I'd be interested as well.

      But maybe someone else does.

Contractors I could use at the moment are:
      Character 3D modelers
      Environment 3D Modelers
      Environment 2D Concept

If any of your friends are interested, have them e-mail me a link to their portfolio at

I do too~. I came across their tumblr (and that specific model) some time ago and felt that would be great. Even their low poly work is really nice.

When they first opened commissions, they sounded interested in commercial work too.

The problem is, plenty of freelancers are like some people that work for companies; some just aren't good at business, are unprofessional or lazy. It can be hard finding a good freelancer, but it's definitely worthwhile.

    11. Dustin on December 16, 2013

@Mana - I really like this particular model that "kouotsu" did: Would love to see what should could do for Mithos and Elise.

I don't understand why freelancers are so flaky. Do they not understand that if their work is good and is featured in a large-ish project, it will help further their careers???

I'm not sure if their general style is what you're looking for, but this person does some pretty good models : . I'm sure they could even recc you to someone else if need be.

And if you need help finding reliable, competent artists, plenty of us could link you to some people (I have giant lists of artists from all over with varying styles). If your artists are flaky, you can also call them out. Just like us, yes it is their time; but you're paying them. If they enter a contract with you, you deserve professionalism. If you need help telling them that they're not meeting expectations or requests, I'm sure some of us wouldn't mind lending a hand with that too. Plenty of the more professional (quality/level, but not "profession-wise") will you tell you that yeah some artists are flaky, but a good commission goes both ways.

    13. Disastercake Creator on December 16, 2013

@James - Good luck on your Kickstarter. And ya, Mithos' fingers are a bit blocky, though once things are in motion it will be quite forgivable. Such is the case with well down low poly models.

@VkBest - I agree that the game and story itself are much more important.

Yes, I will be sending out codes to the game before it is complete. I will probably actually be handing out all the unlockable codes for the digital versions at the same time as the beta. I was requested by Humble Bundle to do this right after the Kickstarter to get it out of the way, but I wanted to give you guys a little time. You won't be able to download them, but it will be there and unlocked in your Humble Bundle account. Even Humble Bundle will be holding a section for your Steam, WiiU, Vita, and PS4 keys.

So soon would be the time to request the refund, but just remember you will get it after the game is complete, not immediately. It's only fair to backers that all the money on the Kickstarter be put towards the game.

omg, complaining about low poly models? lol, even future tales of from PS3 have low poly models!. Anyway, when this project began the characters didn't have textures, for me this is a serious upgrade, although I think the main character is a clone of Cloud (FF VII).

I´m more worried about the game and story at itself.

Creator, what do you mean when you said "you can only do this before I start sending out the digital codes, which will probably start in about 1-2 months"? Will you send codes before the game will be released?

    15. Missing avatar

James Garvin on December 16, 2013

@Disastercake: I understand your position. I'm working on my own project that will be up on Kickstarter sometime next month. I'm also a writer and programmer with very little skill in actually drawing things. Finding good artists is hard even on a good day, and one that will stay around for the long haul is even harder. My wife does a bit of art and helps when she can, but she has little desire to work on the type of game I'm working on and that makes it all the more frustrating. Best we can do is hang in there and try our best.

As for the models, I'm mainly looking at the hands. Looks real low poly at least compared to the other parts of the model. A little out of place in my opinion.

Anyway, I doubt anyone is telling you not state your mind about these sorts of things, but understanding where people are coming from is also important. The way female characters look these days is a hot button topic and should be treated as my opinion. Ultimately, it's your game and you get the final say, so all of this is really moot.

    16. Disastercake Creator on December 16, 2013

@James - I don't mind the comments (except the insultive ones), even if I am talking back to them. The people on Kickstarter have paid for their right to be heard, so I read every comment, and reply to every comment. But just like all of you have the right to say whatever you like, I also have the same right to say whatever I like. I'm not going to give anyone copy and paste soulless responses like you'll get from 99% of other companies. And I'm also not going to pretend to be happy about what people say when I'm not. I'm just going to be myself, because that's who you have invested in.

You backed a writer and a programmer, not an artist. It shouldn't be a surprise that the art style could have changed, considering I made it clear I was the only one actually sacrificing time and money on the project. Most other successful Kickstarters are ran by artists, so they have to deal with flaky individuals of other professions, while I have to deal with flaky artists. When dealing with flaky artists it becomes more visible to the consumer than programmers swapping in on back-end code.

Also, no backer is locked into this. If anyone feels we have strayed too far from what you were hoping, then just private message me with "I would like a refund." That's all it takes. No questions, no hassle, and please no lectures. Then I will mark you down for a refund to be delivered after the project is complete and rewards are sent out. Of course, you can only do this before I start sending out the digital codes, which will probably start in about 1-2 months. I think I've shown enough artwork to give you an idea if you'd like to bail now.

Also, these models are not that low poly. They're all around 4-5k triangles so far. The previous models were around that as well, and they're being made by the same guys. And the game is on Vita and WiiU. What could you have been possibly expecting? Lightning Returns? With this budget? Have you even seen Tales of Symphonia 2 models, one of the best looking AAA anime games in the industry? They look lower poly than these models.

If you know someone who can make better models than I've shown and at reasonable speeds within the budget we have, then please, PLEASE let me know who they are because I'd love to work with them since I spent months and could not find a reliable freelancer with the style we need other than these guys I'm working with now.

@Justin - Thank you. It means a lot to me to know that there are those out there who are happy with where it's going.

    17. Justin Robinson on December 15, 2013

Mike, I'm not gonna vote on anything. I want to play the game that YOU make for us. I backed it trusting you. I don't get where anyone thinks they have a better vision than you could for your game. Keep up the excellent work!

Can't find a way to edit, but I also wanted to say that the original designs for all of the characters were better than what they have now. They were distinctive and not so derivative. The new characters just give me some sort of Final Fantasy vibe.

@David Wright: I hope you're not suggesting that the guy who is working on this should quit and take our money. The guys at Disastercake accepted this level of criticism by trying to get crowdfunded in the first place. The people here put their money down based on a pitch he made and that included proposed art and the like. If they didn't want to do this, then they shouldn't have gone for crowdfunding at all. So they have a certain obligation to their investors and just because we are not a huge corporation, doesn't mean we don't have a voice in where this thing is going. It's the nature of the beast. Sure, some people have a "hands off" approach (kinda like myself), but others don't and they paid their money and want to be involved in the process.

Personally, I think the current design is too far off from what was proposed, and the models are real low poly which takes away from the art a bit. I can see why people don't like Elise's design, too. It doesn't bother me as much as it does others, but when so many female characters in the games industry have this kind of "sexy" design which isn't really practical in the business the character is supposed to be in, you can bet there is going to be some backlash. The developers can either own up to it, or change it, but they have to take responsibility either way.

If the guys who are working on this game bail out without producing anything, I would never support anything else they try in the future. It's really as simple as that for me. This kind of thinking shouldn't even be brought up as it's destructive and unnecessary. This situation simply boils down to the developers made a choice and some backers don't like it. Now the goal should be to find some middle ground so we can move the conversation on to something else. Disastercake should be happy that people actually care enough to even post, because it would be way worse to find out after the game is out that people really hated the style.

    20. David Wright on December 15, 2013

@Disastercake if you and the artist don't want to change it then don't!, even if you made 5 different designs the leading vote percentage would be minimal, I am willing to bet you'll make 2 new designs and people will pick the design everyone is complaining about. And at that point you would have gone and spent money and time on new designs for no reason, either way it's up to you dude! Stay strong and try to letting people get to you :P

You know what? Good for you guys that you like the design. And for anyone else that does. That's fine and fair. And yes, there will always be people that like or dislike anything/something. But, you need to be paying better attention to what you're doing and how it effects the majority of the contributors.

When you brought this project, you should have realized there'd be a lot of responsibility and plenty of trouble. All kinds of projects big and small go through revisions and hassle, and developers or indie, professional and any level in-between or otherwise go through a lot of trouble and deal with complaints and criticism. Frankly? I feel like you're being increasingly immature and a bit of a jerk yourself.

No, you don't deserve to be harassed; no one does! But it happens. And guess what? AGAIN. It. Does. Not. Matter. What some girl thinks about Elise's outfit. It's not just that it's a hoochie mama outfit either (and that's borderline close to the slut shaming crap people pull). Just like PoCs can be racist, girls can be sexist and buy into sexist notions. Who the hell cares how many girls approve the outfit!? If it's problematic, it just is! Own up to it! Guess what? I identify as a feminist, but I enjoy plenty of problematic things. And I love my fanservice and sexuality! But do I like it cheap? No! Do I want it to be the same typical crap that plagues the industries I enjoy? Hell no. And I also expected better of the project quality-wise and of you attitude-wise.

Maybe you need to hire some PR person or something to help you handle the critique and complaints and get through this, because if it's too much for you, you don't need to be hearing the complaints yourself or communicating directly with everyone.

Again, it is your game. Only redesign Elise because you feel like it and like it'll be worthwhile, but no matter what you do, be prepared to own up to it. It's not that hard. Yes, you have a hard job. All devs do. People not working on games do; that shouldn't be new to you. Maybe you need to look around and see how other devs deal with this stuff and the kind of things they go through, because this is starting to sound ridiculous.

And to you, David : yes, Mike could cancel the game. But that would be the lazy thing to do and I think Mike is better than that. And Soul Saga means something to him too, so I don't think he'd be doing himself justice either; there's also the fact that other people have started work on this project and what they have done would go to waste and that'd be a petty and mean thing to do to them.

Also, you didn't respond last time I said it, so I'll request again; I'd like my backing to go to the OST and when the game is complete and on the Wii U's E-shop, I'll buy a copy. If that can't be done, fair enough. If so, great and thank you!

I'm (kind of) sorry to be such a jerkass, but you're being awfully defensive without being entirely logical and reasonable, and I feel like you're implying you thought this would be a cakewalk. You're going to have grow a few new skins to get through this project, I hope you realize that. Good luck again.

    23. Disastercake Creator on December 15, 2013

@David - I agree completely. I'm getting burned out and pissed listening to the same broken record about it, and I really don't want to go back and change her. Even Nozomi is like "I liek this Elise the best!". Yes, a girl is saying that this is not some sort of hoochie mama outfit. The artist doesn't think it is either.

However, it's possible to minimize any damages by just reusing this character design elsewhere if people really want a different design. I will offer up 3 design choices next month: 2 new Elises and this current design. I will let the users vote on it. This way, if anyone complains, I can tell them to shove it because they had their chance at the vote.

Also, this Taro poll really shows how hard my job is. According to the poll, no matter what I would have picked, at least 50% of people would have disagreed with me.

    24. David Wright on December 15, 2013

And a comment for everyone else, just remember mike can cancel this at anytime, if he felt it got too much and he didn't want to carry on because he had to keep doing the redesigns and people was not happy, He could just call it quits and that is that, you would get no product or money back, so try to remember that

    25. David Wright on December 15, 2013

Waaaaah I really don't feel like redesigning Elise AGAIN is a good use of money or time for that matter, and I think deep down you don't either, this may be a Kickstarter but you shouldn't let people push you around, it is your game, your design choices matter, personally I prefer the new version, I think even the hair color choice is better.

Just remember no matter what happens SOMEONE is going to hate it, cry, send you ha trashing messages.

    26. Disastercake Creator on December 14, 2013

Thank you for clarifying, I can see that it makes sense. I'll try to be more aware of that in the future. However, I will start just flipping out on people that start to push their views on new characters designs before they even know or see the characters. A game can't work that way. But since everyone already loved Elise and she became their favorites, I will go back to redesign her based on all the feedback I've been harassed with. In the future, though, prepare to see characters that may be dressed like this even if it doesn't make sense to you.

Mana Cook on December 14, 2013

      I suppose for better reference. . .

Lets use Chrono Trigger still. Right now, Elise looks like a generic Lucca to me, and not as cute. Now, is Lucca cute? Hell yeah! Can she be sexy? If someone draws her that way, then yeah! But is that a basis or implied in her design? Not in the least. Maybe her design also does not outright read that she's a mechanic/engineer, but it has a strong feel of technology and is more futuristic looking than everyone else while maintaining the same aesthetic everyone carries (not just because of the art style, either). She, Chrono and Marle all create a great balance - and she does with everyone else in the party too. She's well covered, has a simple but practical design that matches her personality and her character.

Now lets look at a character that wears very little. Ayla is a cavewoman and *none* of the cave people wear much of anything. She can get away with wearing little because of the time she comes from, it's in line with her society and character (she gets the utmost movement and dexterity from her outfit too and matches the animalistic way she moves and fights). However, her design isn't something that draws attention to her sex appeal; yeah, she's kind of sexy by default of skimpier clothing, but it's not handled in a way that reduces her to that or isn't fitting.

To me, it's just as silly that characters like Tifa are dressed the way they are. Tifa is cute and I like her design - and it's perfect for when she's a bartender - but since she knows she's going to be heading out for some serious activity, she shouldn't have left her breats and midriff so exposed (and her skirt doesn't look that great to move in for a martial artist, don't care what they want me to believe).

It's really about being practical and doing the character justice. Right now, a lot of us feel like Elise isn't being done justice and her design isn't very practical. That's what it comes down to.

    28. Missing avatar

Mana Cook on December 14, 2013

It's probably a mix of things, I think. People don't mind fanservice, but it needs to match the character and their role. Elise is a mechanic, but she's not really dressed like one anymore. Her sexuality also doesn't seem to be a huge piece of her character (nor does it really need to be). However, this current one has nothing to do with her character, says nothing about it and doesn't match everyone else.

Her previous designs at least matched Mithos and aesthetically were aligned with the game; she doesn't look like she'd fit with the party. Also, don't forget that a girl can still make a sexist design and/or enjoy one; that's irrelevant. But the ultimate problem here isn't necessarily how problematic the design is, but how poor overall. It's not terrible on its own, but it's not as unique as the first and is such a far look from everything else so far.

If you have a dancer in the guild, I fully expect her to be cute and sexy and showing skin! But a mechanic needs a more pragmatic design than this. The design also isn't very s/punky, aand it's only tomboyish by default of her being kind of messy looking.

It's fine to redo things and do what you want, but it's also important to be open to critique/criticism and prepared for complaints (especially since everyone is paying before the product is completed).

Maybe next time hold a poll for the designs for everyone?

    29. Disastercake Creator on December 14, 2013

I hope that the disdain for Elise's outfit is only because she's Elise, and not because people are not expecting to see that sort of stuff. The design was made by a girl, approved by another girl, then sent to me. You'll be seeing the design in the game as is, whether as Elise or another character.

And there could quite possibly be other designs with just as much skin. I just hope you are prepared to accept that the people working on this project don't mind that type of thing, and we're going to make what we like without worrying about trying to please everyone and their personal beliefs.

If I redo Elise one last time, it will only be because I feel that she may benefit from being a bit more similar. However, I still want her to be tomboyish and a little "punky". She's going to be kicking ass with her robot leg, after all.

I also want to try to implement my punching glove messenger bag.

    30. TheChosenOne on December 14, 2013

      1 1 2 2 2 for me. :)

And Elise looks like shess confidently dressed... for hooters. Not a combat worthy engineer. Its a very typical look solely inspired to be sexy and commercial basicly. And I'm certainly no feminest but I like strong original characters. Not a run of the mill sexy look.

I'm wondering, would it possible to having my backing go to a copy of the soundtrack and when I get a Wii U, I could simply buy a copy (instead of having a key/whatever sit for who knows how long).

I don't know why anyone would be offended by the new Elise. If anything, she looks like a more confident and strong willed character, as opposed to the air headed worry wort blonde I thought she was going to be. On another note, I think the new Mithos redesign looks awesome! Keep up the good work.

    33. Disastercake Creator on December 13, 2013

Sorry Brash, I didn't mean to come off like I was pointing fingers. The Mighty Number 9 debacle has got me concerned that those types of things may try to affect Soul Saga with the reasoning behind people's opinion with Elise. But like I said, I may go back to completely redesign her to be more like the original (like we did with Mithos). I like this character design as it is and will definitely be using it in the game, so I'm glad that wouldn't offend you.

    34. Brash Smith on December 13, 2013

Lastly I hate to ask but what is wrong with people who are feminists anyway?

    35. Brash Smith on December 13, 2013

I am not a feminist. I am unsure of the others who posted. Though I do have to say increasing her bust size 3 times and having her have a ridiculously skinny hourglass shape that couldn't support her body and then saying that's part of soul saga's vision baffles me.

Many of the people who dislike the new design of elise just want her to be wearing something a little more realistic or for her to have a more realistic body type. (Busty with the proper waist/stomach/support so there's no immediate back problems.)

Moving a slider to make her body seem more correct doesn't seem like a major design sacrifice. So like do whatever you want.

I never meant to make a dig at you. But to just go it's feminism that's the only reason why someone would want a design of a character to be changed, Jrpgs especially alot of the classic ones had character designs of all types in the way of females.

Lets use Jeane as a example she is busty and full figured. Never would I say there's anything wrong. Shes a flirty mysterious character who dresses how she wants to. But in all of her official art she has the body to support her top.

But back on Elise you seem to have gone closer to Quiet from Metal Gear who STILL has the stomach/waist to support her chest size.

To just lump any criticism as (FEMINISM, WHITE KNIGHTING, IGNORE THEM) lets move on doesn't help anyone.

Try your best. Make the game you want to make. I want to play your game.

It's always good to see people listening to fans but please don't let them ruin what you what this game to be. You will never win trying to please everyone man, especially a group of picky, whiny gamers (I'm not talking about everyone or every gamer of course).

I'd like to note I said "may". I will not sacrifice the project's progress to redesign her. Getting the game done is more important.

@ Jorge - I think a later 2014 might be a better guess. I promise I won't run out of money, but if people continue to be flaky then some stretch goals may need to be cut out for the game. But you guys know the vision I have, so even if the first game has bumpy issues, the second one should go a lot smoother since we already have assets around and anything I can't fit in now I will make sure to fit in then.

Regarding Elise - I have absolutely no problem with the cleavage. None. I will never give in to feminist requests to change Soul Saga's vision. However, I do think that out of all the characters I have revealed, Elise took the sharpest change in design. There is a negative psychology factor involved with change, even if it's for the better. I may figure out a way to use the current design in the game somewhere else so that we don't take a step backwards, and also take 1 more stab at Elise, and will make sure she is closer to the original outfit design while still lining up with the vision I have for her.

@Mihir-Pirate King of the Obsidian Order:

      Short answer: No ;)

Mike has already made the decision to keep the current design.

These look great. Altough I wish we could have a similar poll for Ellie's new look, considering how many different variations it has gone through. I too liked her 2nd look better, and while this one is ok, I think it could be better :P

Is there any chance this could happen?

You're on a huge roll here with the updates! Awesome!
For Taro, I would go with purple, poof, two horns, and the squirrel tail. It seems the most mascot-like to me. Also the first outfit.

A bit off topic, but what are the chances the game won't make it to a mid 2014 release? I ask since the search for an artist took longer and was more expensive than expected. And redesigns are still going on. I'm not familiar with game development obviously but I don't see how the game won't run into money problems considering all the extra content and delays. I'd love to be proven wrong, but if at the end of the day you need more time please don't hesitate to say so. Better than leaving it till the last minute to the massive outcry of backers (Double Fine Adventure)

I really like Max's new design and it is great that the game is going well.

I am fine with the designs and still very excited to play this on my PS4, hopefully sooner than later.

Great to see the forums up and running so soon, wasn't expecting that :D Will be posting my thoughts on Taro's design soon :D

@Brash - thanks for looking at my "mock up" of Elise (, I don't mean it in anyway to be a dig at Mike, I just feel that as a mechanic, she needs to be wearing more. I can handle busty, but her outfit needs to be a bit more realistic, even if it's just a full shirt.

Like I'm not bashing the game or anything along those lines. But just make her body type a little more realistic.
