Soul Saga Update 2
Has it been a month already?
Hey everyone, I'm back! About a month ago I announced that I would be going into silent mode so I could focus on getting Soul Saga's development jump started. I'm happy to say that I was very successful in getting the ball rolling, and I get to share some of that with you today!
I've been in Japan
Yup, that’s right. I went to Japan last month and scoured for artists with my Japanese Branch HR Manager, Nozomi, to acquire some fresh talent to work on Soul Saga. It was a fun time, but it was 100% work, so I didn’t get to experience a whole lot of extra stuff. I would say my favorite part was the $1 sushi plates, $1 ramen refills (REAL ramen), and all you can drink booze for $15. Oh, and this adorable bear named Kumamon. I also acquired art books to get a lot of examples to create a training document for new artists.
New Mithos Design
We found a completely amazing character artist named Ina. Ina keeps it simple while still adding a lot of creativity and charm to the characters. We decided to go a slightly steam punk route with the characters designs, and I’m loving this new Mithos design (seen above). We’re looking at tweaking him a little bit, like making him look a little older.
And A New Environmental Artist
We found another awesome artist named Yushiro who will be doing our environmental work. The above image is one of the mysterious islands you will be exploring with Mithos. The island is currently named Dragon Tree Island.
Who also does Monster Art
Yushiro also does ridiculously great monster art. Every monster design drips of character and originality. You can see an example of the Goblin Tribe that lives on the Dragon Tree Island here.
Aivi has completed the battle theme, and it sounds freaking AMAZING.
I've made a lot of progress on the story, though not as much as I wanted to. It took a lot of work to find these great artists and get them started. I'm going to finish some stuff up over this next month while I manage the artists, but I will stay in more frequent contact. Official updates will most likely remain a month apart during the pre-alpha phase.
Since I am completely revamping the art style and most everything about the game, it's only appropriate that I also revamp the website. You may notice I removed all of the old posts on the site since they are really no longer relevant to the project. It's interesting to see my struggles with a low budget before Kickstarter, but now that we don't have to worry about that as much I think it's a good idea to start fresh so any new fans aren't confused. I'll start to change everything else over the next couple months.
Soul Saga is Greenlit!
I woke up one morning not too long ago and was surprised to see Soul Saga had been greenlit for Steam! This is crazy exciting news and totally unexpected. We were just about to enter the top 100 on Greenlight, and historically you needed to be around the top 25 to get a chance to be picked. Thank you to everyone who helped advertise the Greenlight page to make this possible!
Let's Play Xenoblade!
When someone talks to me about Xenoblade they usually fall over and start convulsing in an uncontrollable fit of passion for this game. I've only ever heard it touted as the best JRPG in years. I'm curious as to how true this claim is, so I got a hold of a copy and want to play through it a little with all of you! I hear the game is ridiculously long, so I may end up playing it by myself after the first Let's Play, but we'll see how everyone feels about it. I'm going to do the let's play this Friday (the 6th) at 3 p.m. pacific time. This will be at the usual places of:
The Twitch site is the one I actually read for chats since it's chat and streaming features are more responsive, but the Youtube channel streaming is also implemented at the same time for anyone who can't load twitch.
Mithos is guest starring in another game on Kickstarter!
The art team I utilized before Soul Saga’s Kickstarter has been inspired by Soul Saga’s success and launched their own project called Crystal Arena. Crystal Arena is a MOBA-like strategy game inspired by DotA, LoL, and Warcraft III for iOS, Android, PC and Mac. I normally don’t advertise like this, but Mithos will actually be a playable character in Crystal Arena! Since they helped create the original Mithos design, they’ll be using a variation of the original design of Mithos.
Make sure you check out their Kickstarter page! They are one of the few Kickstarters I've seen who have already made a lot of progress on gameplay videos, and it’s obvious they put a lot of hard work into their project.
