Soul Saga Update 2

Has it been a month already?

Hey everyone, I'm back! About a month ago I announced that I would be going into silent mode so I could focus on getting Soul Saga's development jump started. I'm happy to say that I was very successful in getting the ball rolling, and I get to share some of that with you today!

I've been in Japan

Yup, that’s right. I went to Japan last month and scoured for artists with my Japanese Branch HR Manager, Nozomi, to acquire some fresh talent to work on Soul Saga. It was a fun time, but it was 100% work, so I didn’t get to experience a whole lot of extra stuff. I would say my favorite part was the $1 sushi plates, $1 ramen refills (REAL ramen), and all you can drink booze for $15. Oh, and this adorable bear named Kumamon. I also acquired art books to get a lot of examples to create a training document for new artists.

New Mithos Design

We found a completely amazing character artist named Ina. Ina keeps it simple while still adding a lot of creativity and charm to the characters. We decided to go a slightly steam punk route with the characters designs, and I’m loving this new Mithos design (seen above). We’re looking at tweaking him a little bit, like making him look a little older.

And A New Environmental Artist

We found another awesome artist named Yushiro who will be doing our environmental work. The above image is one of the mysterious islands you will be exploring with Mithos. The island is currently named Dragon Tree Island.

Who also does Monster Art

Yushiro also does ridiculously great monster art. Every monster design drips of character and originality. You can see an example of the Goblin Tribe that lives on the Dragon Tree Island here.

Battle Theme

Aivi has completed the battle theme, and it sounds freaking AMAZING.

Story Progress

I've made a lot of progress on the story, though not as much as I wanted to. It took a lot of work to find these great artists and get them started. I'm going to finish some stuff up over this next month while I manage the artists, but I will stay in more frequent contact. Official updates will most likely remain a month apart during the pre-alpha phase.

Website Revamp

Since I am completely revamping the art style and most everything about the game, it's only appropriate that I also revamp the website. You may notice I removed all of the old posts on the site since they are really no longer relevant to the project. It's interesting to see my struggles with a low budget before Kickstarter, but now that we don't have to worry about that as much I think it's a good idea to start fresh so any new fans aren't confused. I'll start to change everything else over the next couple months.

Soul Saga is Greenlit!

I woke up one morning not too long ago and was surprised to see Soul Saga had been greenlit for Steam! This is crazy exciting news and totally unexpected. We were just about to enter the top 100 on Greenlight, and historically you needed to be around the top 25 to get a chance to be picked. Thank you to everyone who helped advertise the Greenlight page to make this possible!

Let's Play Xenoblade!

When someone talks to me about Xenoblade they usually fall over and start convulsing in an uncontrollable fit of passion for this game. I've only ever heard it touted as the best JRPG in years. I'm curious as to how true this claim is, so I got a hold of a copy and want to play through it a little with all of you! I hear the game is ridiculously long, so I may end up playing it by myself after the first Let's Play, but we'll see how everyone feels about it. I'm going to do the let's play this Friday (the 6th) at 3 p.m. pacific time. This will be at the usual places of:

The Twitch site is the one I actually read for chats since it's chat and streaming features are more responsive, but the Youtube channel streaming is also implemented at the same time for anyone who can't load twitch.

Mithos is guest starring in another game on Kickstarter!

The art team I utilized before Soul Saga’s Kickstarter has been inspired by Soul Saga’s success and launched their own project called Crystal Arena. Crystal Arena is a MOBA-like strategy game inspired by DotA, LoL, and Warcraft III for iOS, Android, PC and Mac. I normally don’t advertise like this, but Mithos will actually be a playable character in Crystal Arena! Since they helped create the original Mithos design, they’ll be using a variation of the original design of Mithos.

Make sure you check out their Kickstarter page! They are one of the few Kickstarters I've seen who have already made a lot of progress on gameplay videos, and it’s obvious they put a lot of hard work into their project.

what are u all talking about THIS NEW DESIGN IS PERFECT!!!!!!

    2. William Allen on September 22, 2013

Can't say I like the new Mithos, he looks too much like a sub character or an NPC. The first design was a lot more unique and had that JRPG flair. Guess I'll have to wait and see if the design gets tweaked any.

    3. Frank Napolitano on September 17, 2013

Dragon Tree resembles Skyloft from Skyward Sword.....which isn't a bad thing, at all.

The thing that makes me think of Skyloft the most is the river running through the small village area.

Though I have to say, the new design of Mithos and Dragon Tree are beautiful. I'm so happy that I backed Soul Saga, I'm looking forward to it more than almost any other game.

Keep up the awesome work, it's easy to tell that a lot of love is going into the development=)

Can't wait to see the next update.

P.S, good call on going to Japan to find artists for this. It's the art work that really sets JRPGs apart..........and awesome turn based battle systems. Man I'm so hyped for this. While the rest of the world is going crazy for a $250 million dollar GTA5, I'm going crazy for a $200k indie game, and with good reason.

ok, my long winded post is finished, lol.....keep it up ;)

    4. sixiack on September 12, 2013

so how will the boss theme be like the normal battle theme is awsome so i hope that the boss theme get's far more exilireting

    5. Aaron Jolliffe on September 9, 2013

The original Mithos design should totally be an alternate costume.

    6. Ricardo Fernandez on September 9, 2013

I liked the old Mithos design way better. The vibrant colors reminded me of Toriyama's designs in games like Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest. It was the first thing that catched my eye about this project.

I gess I'll have to learn to live with the new look...

+1 for the new Mithos, but yes, do age him a little... At the moment, the front view Mithos puts me in mind of a puppy - look at that expression! :)

Everything's awesome here :) Quiet for a month is NOTHING if it means huge, meaty, interesting updates with lots of great art and cool music, if you ask me;) Also, Bear GIFs. Amazing update, Mike!

    10. DeafTard on September 6, 2013

WE LOVE YOU MIKE! See how many people have commented on you? It is because we MISS YOU! But I am super glad that you took an entire month off and you stand your ground because I have noticed that other kickstarter projects start to get sh*t on because the project leader doesn't provide an update every freaking week. I mean come on! Give the project leader time! Hell, even if you were gone for 2 months I would of been ok with it since I know how truly dedicated you are to making Soul Saga. I am also sure that you never expected this amount of support and raising all that money as well! Anyways, keep doing what your doing Mikey and TAKE YOUR TIME! Don't forget about what I have said to you in the past about the release date! Just because it says Estimated Delivery is July 2014 does not mean you have to deliver on that exact month because so many things can change and you could always use some more time to polish things, add more stuff, test for bugs, do a focus test, work on the story a bit more, promoting the game at cons like PAX/E3/etc, and so much more! Don't rush Mikey! Keep doing what your doing and do whatever it is that makes you COMFORTABLE in making Soul Saga at your own pace! See you tomorrow Mikey, SO EXCITED!!!

I love love love the new Mithos design. It seems a bit more relaxed than the old design, far less military-like.
I'm looking forward to this even more now!

    12. Connor A. Hopkins on September 5, 2013

Thank you for the update. I personally really like the current design of Mithos and I hope we get to see more environments and characters as development gains momentum. Also, I think that "The Alchemist's Trials" battle theme is excellent! I can detect a little bit of Final Fantasy XIII within the composition and that is just fine with me. Also, please let Aivi Tran know that she is doing a great job.

    13. Dustin on September 5, 2013

Anyone else back the project because of the chibi-like art style? I don't mind the new art direction, but I really liked the original art, especially as a fan of FF3 and Bravely Default. Hoping to see more art soon for other characters and environments...

@Zackasaur @Lemyngue agree with your thoughts Crystal Arena's character designs. Unnecessary. That's why I really appreciate what Mike has done with Elise in this game. She's smart (an engineer!), independent, not overly sexed up - no giant chest, pointless revealing armor, or high heeled boots - and she's tough. My wife approves :)

    15. Cameron Youngs
      on September 5, 2013

To add to Zackasaur and Lemyngue: One of the comments on the game has makes the female character more modest. Very true.

Crystal Arena looks interesting but I dislike having to pay a high additional costs to get one time characters and the game needs a lot more polish. Currently it sits at 63 with 9,315$. You would think an epic product but I see people are paying 2 grand to give your ideas and create a character (with everything else included but seems like a bit much). Or pay a bit less and make a level. The tiers could be a bit more reasonable for me. But I'd also have to see a better design. Looks like a very sub Generation of Chaos.

      Vincent on September 5, 2013

This update is made of awesome with a sprinkling of amazing. LOVE the battle theme. Mithos's new design is, IMHO, an improvement. Suits his backstory better.

    17. Zackasaur on September 5, 2013

I agree with Lemyngue about Crystal Arena. The objectification is quite disgusting.

I'm very excited to keep supporting Soul Saga, but I feel quite the opposite regarding Crystal Arena.

    18. Juan Carlos Gonzalez on September 5, 2013

I love the new Mithos design, It feels more realistic to the one where he looks like has already become Guild Master. I don't see why people have a problem with his look or his youth. It is a Saga and 3 games long it's not like Mithos is going to stop Garen in a day or a month. I hope he matures into the Crystal Arenas Mithos which I don't disagree with everyone, looks like a fraking bEAST.

    19. Missing avatar

      Lemyngue on September 5, 2013

While Crystal Arena seems like an interesting game, I don' like Crystal Arena design, too much objetification and useless piece of armor for female characters ONLY. In other words, it's really disrespectifull with women's players :/

    20. Elizabeth Crystal Lloyd on September 5, 2013

I love Aivi's music! It's almost too cool for ordinary battle music, since eventually we'll be high enough levels we won't be able to listen to it each battle! Which means the boss music will be even better... if that's even possible. Aivi sounds so good, it's hard to imagine outdoing this song!

I like the new Mithos OK, though I agree he could use a bit more color, and he feels younger than his old design to me, but maybe that's just me. The Dragon Tree and goblins are amazing! I'm so glad I'm getting the art book. I may have to pull some images from the digital one to make my own poster or something when I get it. It looks fantastic. all in all, the trip to Japan was a huge success. =D Also, congrats on the Greenlight. Now let me alert all my friends that use Steam and let them know to prepare for awesomeness... =)

great new design's mithos looks much better older and without the giant hair peacock imo. cant wait to see what else is on the way

    22. Yuoaman on September 5, 2013

I like the new Mithos design, but I'd really like to see something like an armband or amulet to bring some additional color into the design - just my feelings on the matter.

    23. TheChosenOne on September 5, 2013

Massively turned off by the new artstyle of Mythos. Very boring and he looks way to young. Hope he looks more like the original art one.
(frontpage) Elise looks playfull but cool and Mithos here now looks like a schoolboy who gets picked on for being to skinny. More like a kid brother of elise. The other art looks amazing.

    24. AttentionDeficitGuy on September 5, 2013

I'd already heard the battle theme on YouTube before seeing this (several times, actually), and I LOVE IT! It sounds a little mellow, but that might just be me playing too much Ys lately, and in any case mellow-ish battle themes can often work very well indeed!

The Mithos redesign is REALLY cool. It seems to have fit a nice middle-ground, still having that anime-esque look without looking overly cartoony, and design-wise I think that's a great place to be. I cannot wait to see the other characters' redesigns!

    25. Wes on September 5, 2013

I'm liking the new designs, my only thing is as soon as I saw Mithos, I thought he looks a little too much like Dante from DMC

    26. Missing avatar

      halcyontron on September 5, 2013

Damn lack of an edit button. Sorry, "Mithos", not Mythos. Also i will join the chorus who thinks the character redesign looks fun, but do agree too with @Nikko Gomez that Mithos now loses a lot of color that made him pop against those brown and green backgrounds. Maybe a slight recoloring of the pants (dark denim? dunno) or additional blue, silver, or red accessory would help him flourish a bit more? Can't wait to see the artists take on Elise and Max! Oh and congrats on Steam's Greenlight!

    28. Blackstaff on September 5, 2013

I like the new artstyle of Mythos, but he looks a little bland for my taste right now. Maybe make him a little older, or change the hairstyle... I don't know. He's got the wrong kiddo look for me at the moment.

The rest is gorgeous though. :)

Hope Mythos can eat $1 sushi plates and $1 ramen refills in a town tavern to regain HP/ MP. As they say, all great stories share a level of truth with the writer's life. ;p

    31. Ryan
      on September 5, 2013

I like the new design. Honestly I always though the original was way to flashy for his character. Before he looked like he was an imperial solider in so grand army. Now he really looks like a down to earth rouge who lives by his own rules. When you first described mithos story i never assumed he was rich and powerful but his design said different. Now I feel his design fits PERFECTLY with his backstory and persona. After going through the comments I see that a majority of the people like it as well so don't let the few negative ones like the one below me change your mind.

Sure the old one was colorful and vibrant but it didn't fit his character at all. What Ina did, thats what you should keep.

    32. Ian on September 5, 2013

Nice Mithos design, though I think it makes him look younger. His Crystal Arena design is my favorite.

    33. Rosa B Iglesias on September 5, 2013

I love the new Mithos design, the little goblin is awesome too.. i can wait to play this game!

    34. Missing avatar

Nikko Gomez on September 5, 2013

I do not like being negative, but I honestly do not like the redesign of Mithos. His old design had a lot more color and it made him stand out more. The current design looks too generic (I am thinking that this would be fixed if changing his armor in-game changed his look as well).

    35. JusticeBolt on September 5, 2013

Awesome new design! Make him look a little older is a great idea.

    36. Aaron Jolliffe on September 5, 2013

I'm a HUGE fan of Mithos' new design! It fits a lot better with Elise's design, and just looks better overall! So many cool things coming together!

Welcome back from Japan and thanks for such a great update!

The artists are amazing Dragon Tree Island and its inhabitents are beautiful and i Love Mithos' new design! Making him older is definitely a great idea, i play a LOT of JRPGS and a break from 15-17yo kids is always well recieved!

The tie-in with Crystal Arena says he discovered the portal there while exploring and decided to stay and help the fight... Is this going to be incorporated into Soul Saga?

Such as having him at least slightly older than he appears in Crystal Arena - Returned after serving as he pledged to!

Or starting the game as a child/teen and shortly into the game playing out the discovery and ageing up.

If it's at all possible, maybe you could even create some interaction between the two, some bonus items/exp/something unlocked(perhaps even bringing a character from CA to Soul Saga - I'd love to bring the bunny boxer along!) when you confirm in Crystal Arena that you've 'cleared' the discovery of the portal chapter(or a different chapter) or just that you own both games?

    43. Sean Birchfield on September 5, 2013

Awesome update. The battle theme just sounds amazing, nice job Aivi! The new picture of the world looks great too, and can't wait the leave the airship bay!

      Now to wait until Friday...

    44. Thild42 on September 5, 2013

      thanks for the update Mike.
The battle theme is just awesome, it is what we could expect for a JRPG and yet it does not sound like any battle theme I can recall.
I am really looking forward to the boss battle theme, and I am sure it is already in the pipe...
      Good job Aivi.

As already said, Aivi did a fantastic job on the battle theme, so freaking good.

Awesome to see an update! I love the new character designs, I wasn't feeling the previous ones to be honest, really prefer the new design.

I agree with Orson. I'm glad that you're going to age the characters a bit more, I'm sick and tired of seeing children to early teen looking characters with either an incredibly immature personality, or a personality too mature for their age.

=D Woah! Love the new design! And that Dragon Tree Island? Gorgeous! n_n And you're right about the little goblin guys, they look unique and suit perfectly~

I have to say, there's plenty of 'Badass Anime Teen!' characters around, I wouldn't mind seeing an older one every once in a while.
Okay, you're like 12(to 18) and you did this amazing quest thingy. Uh- huh, that's great. Join the line of 20kajillion others your age. I like the idea of the crew being in that middle-ground, not practically(or actually) a kid but not a super-seasoned veteran either(who are usually just a side character anyway).

It seems that 'middle-aged' group tend to get relegated to the status of 'level headed lesson provider' or 'hot shot badass who takes a backseat in the quest because it's all about YOU!' in many JRPGs.

      So, just how old were you thinking of going? n_n;
