Once upon a time, I was the moderately successful teenage webmaster of a "Weird Al" Yankovic fan site.
From minor notoriety, to jet-setting for concerts, to earning a stalker, Weird Me showcases the awkward (and true) intricacies of an adolescence spent carving out a corner of the internet frontier in dedication to the king of parody.
This is my whole story... now transformed into one complete collection for the first time, along with updated pages and BRAND NEW content!
When I was 13 years old back in the year 2000, I launched wayuhf.com with the noble goal of running an online petition to solicit MGM Studios for the re-release of the then out-of-print film UHF. I also needed to prove to the sprawling world wide web that I too was one of the most true Weird Al fans. The website ran for many years as my fandom waxed and waned, and catalogued all facets of my astounding passion for all things Al.
Between 2014 and 2015, I completed 4 volumes of Weird Me (over 120 pages of comics), detailing the many trials and triumphs I faced both online and out in the world in pursuit of great weirdness... among them: my discovery of Weird Al and the genesis of my fandom, the results of my UHF petition, so very many concerts and the verbatim reviews from my website, the friends (and stalker) I met on the internet, and my run-ins with Al and his band.
Now, I'm gathering the whole comic series into one collection! With over 60 fixed-up pages and 30 brand new pages of content, this collection features the entire original comic, new untold stories from my years as a webmaster, and shows how this comic has helped me return to my roots, connect with fellow fans, and dare to be stupid!
4/29/17: Well dang, ask and ye shall receive! We hit Stretch Goal #2!!! Get ready for full color pages within the book featuring all four of the original mini-comic covers, along with some photos from my days as a webmaster. THANK YOU for the unbelievable support!!
With the last few hours of the campaign ahead of us, Stretch Goal #3 is simple: Anything else that's raised will go towards MORE FREEBIES for all of you! (More temporary tattoos, anyone?!) These funds will also be a super helpful buffer for my very tight budgeting. :)

4/17/17: My most selfish Kickstarter challenge yet... My 30th birthday is this Saturday (4/22), and the best gift ever would be a fully funded campaign!!! You've all been absolutely slaying the challenges so far, and I'm so, so thrilled with how far we've come! If we get this campaign fully funded by 4/22, that'll give us a full week to keep raising funds to allow me to add all sorts of awesome, fancy features to the book!
4/15/17: This project is 75% funded in its first two weeks with over 100 backers! That's awesome! So awesome, that I've added FREE TEMPORARY TATTOOS for all backers as my thank you. Let's keep it up!!!
This Kickstarter aims to fund the production of Weird Me: The Complete Collection, which will be fully designed and published by the creator, Kelly! Since this will be a direct small press effort, costs are very streamlined. They will mainly cover printing costs, shipping costs to get the books to you (the backers), and reward costs.
If we make it past the initial goal, I have lots of plans for stretch goals to further reward my fantastic backers, and to make this book the best it can be! See below for more details.
The reward tiers have been kept simple so that there are three main categories for backers:
1) Get the book!
2) Get the book, plus a bunch of rewards!
3), Get the book, a bunch of rewards, and a personalized drawing!
Tentative designs for the enamel pin and sticker sheet!
Comic shops and other distributors also have the option to get Distro Packages - either 5 copies of Weird Me or 10 copies of Weird Me!
If the initial goal is exceeded, I'll unlock additional rewards AND enhancements to the book (like embossing the cover, full color interior bonus pages, and cover flaps) that will benefit all existing backers! The more you support this project and spread the word, the more you'll get out of it. :)
So what's with all these fixed-up pages and new content in the book?!
There were lots of stories that I didn't get the chance to tell in the original issues of Weird Me in the interest of focusing on the main narrative of the series. But now, through short vignettes added throughout the book, you'll also get comics about...
- Tracking down old CDs in the era before online shopping!
- My old fan art!
- More concert reviews!
- My struggles through accordion lessons!
- More embarrassing teenage feelings!
As the main comic was also created over a few years, I'm hoping to show some added care as this story finally comes together into a single book. By fixing up a number of the original pages, the comic will be more cohesive overall, some glaring errors will finally get taken care of (whoops!), and people that enjoyed the original books will get something new to enjoy!
Backers will be the first to see the updated pages and new content. Check back here throughout the campaign for sneak peeks!
We hit the initial Kickstarter goal, so now we get to shoot for STRETCH GOALS!!! The first goal has been unlocked:
STRETCH GOAL #3: MORE FREEBIES! I'm blown away with all of the support I've received, so any additional funds raised will go towards adding more fun stuff to every backer's rewards (more temporary tattoos, anyone?!). The extra money will also be a super helpful buffer for my very tight budgeting. :)
*** UNLOCKED*** STRETCH GOAL #2: I'm hoping to add a section of full color pages to the book in order to reproduce the original covers and include some (embarrassing) photos from my webmaster days!
*** UNLOCKED*** STRETCH GOAL #1: French fold covers would be a gorgeous addition to the book, and it'll make the cover more durable overall! With this goal, I'm also hoping to add free postcards to every backer's rewards!
Additional enhancements/rewards already unlocked:
- Spot gloss cover
- French fold covers
- Full-color pages within the book for photos and reproductions of the original mini-comic covers
- Temporary tattoos for ALL backers
- Postcards for ALL backers
Check back here as the campaign continues for more stretch goals!!
Check out some pages from Weird Me!
Some of these pages will be getting fixed up for the complete collection, and project backers will get to see them first!
Kelly Phillips is a cartoonist living in West Philly. She's been making comics since she was a little kid, went to art school to learn about "real art," realized she hated it, and went back to making comics. Her comics are frequently based on her own life and experiences, with titles such as the Dr. Seuss parody Oh, The Things You Won't Know! and the ongoing series The Catalogue about growing up in a crazy cat lady household. Her work has been featured in various anthologies, publications, and newspapers.
She is also the co-editor and publisher of the award-winning all-girl comic anthology Dirty Diamonds. The goal of Dirty Diamonds has been to give the women of comics a dedicated outlet for telling their stories, and artists from around the world have contributed their semi-autobiographical works, highlighting both the talents and experiences of women in comics today. Each book features a unique theme around which all of the comics focus. In 2015, we won the Philly Geek Award for Comic Creators of the Year, and copies of all seven of our previous issues have been donated to the permanent comics collection at the Library of Congress.
She and fellow editor Claire Folkman have been publishing Dirty Diamonds since 2011, with the eighth volume coming out this Fall around the theme of Sex (and will be funded by a Kickstarter campaign launching June 1st!).
Risks and challenges
I have run three successful Kickstarter campaigns over the past 3 years to fund Dirty Diamonds #5: Comics, Dirty Diamonds #6: Beauty, and Dirty Diamonds #7: Imagination (exceeding our initial goals each time!). So, I have quite a bit of experience making the book happen and getting it out to backers!
Initial quotes have been received from the book publisher and producers of rewards, all of which are vendors that I've utilized in the past and can guarantee their quality and timeliness.
There is a good amount of the book that needs to be completed, as well as ensuring that the layouts from the original mini comics are converted into the new book's format, but I've built in a long enough lead time for producing the final book that there should be no trouble meeting the expected timelines.
