UPDATE 4/18/14: It's the last day of our campaign, and we hit our $8,000 stretch goal!! We'll now be able to increase the page rate we're giving our artists, AND we'll be able to produce more books at a higher quality! We're so grateful to everyone who's backed our project and shown their support for the amazingly talented comic creators in this book.
UPDATE 4/14/14: Last Thursday, we finally hit our goal!!! :) An infinite number of THANK YOUS to everyone who has continued to support our project and our artists.
We have our eyes set on our stretch goal of $8,000 in order to increase the page rate that we're paying each artists in the book, and to increase our print run - more comics in more hands! All additional funds raised up to that goal will go directly into the production of the book.
Have a pat on the back for being such wonderful proponents of women in comics!
UPDATE 4/8/14: Check out some more gorgeous artwork previews from the book!
UPDATE 4/7/14: There's 11 days left, and we're almost at 90%! We're hoping to keep this momentum going and roll full-steam ahead towards our goal, and possibly beyond to our stretch goals to pay the artists in this issue a higher page rate!
We're so appreciative of the support so far, and we're hoping for a strong week. Let's kick it off with more bloopers :)
UPDATE 3/26/14: We're one week into the campaign, and we're already over 50% funded with over 100 backers! We are blown away by the generosity and support so far. We still have a long way to go, so please help continue to spread the word about DIRTY DIAMONDS!
Due to popular demand, we've adjusted our rewards:
- We have increased the number of available rewards in the $75 tier
- We have added a new ALL DIGITAL reward tier at $15 - get the new issue as a PDF along with the entire digital backlog! A very shipping-friendly option.
To help celebrate our one-weekiversary, please enjoy a blooper reel from our video shoot :)
We would also like to share some preview images from the comics in the book. Check it out! It's all gorgeous!
Each issue of DIRTY DIAMONDS features comics around a central theme, and our milestone fifth issue showcases stories about COMICS. Everyone found comics in a different way, and this issue contains over 100 pages of comics from artists in SIX different countries about the memorable moments in their comics experiences.
We've collected all of the stories, so now we need your help to make this book a reality! The final product will be a perfect-bound, letter-sized book featuring a gorgeous special guest cover by Carey Pietsch.
Note: Mock-up of the finished book
Featuring 32 artists, this will be our biggest issue to date! The baseline Kickstarter goal will fund the printing of the book, the production of our rewards, all of the related shipping costs, and - most importantly - compensation for our incredible contributors.
Along with the book itself, back issues, books from the editors, and a THANK YOU to everyone who contributes to this campaign, we're pumped to offer DIRTY DIAMONDS swag as rewards! Postcards, adorable pins, screen-printed totes - stylish ways to show off your support of women comic creators!
Note: Mock-ups of the finalized rewards. Designs subject to change.
Our baseline Kickstarter goal is enough for us to complete a print run of 500 books, provide compensation for our artists (along with some free copies of the book), and produce the rewards for our campaign contributors.
With our stretch goals, we're hoping to primarily offer a higher page rate to the artists in this issue. They're the ones that make the book as great as it is, and we want to show them as much love as possible!
- If we meet our first stretch goal of $8,000, we will be able to increase the compensation for our artists AND increase the print run of the book (750 copies).
- If we meet our second stretch goal of $10,000, we will be able to increase the compensation for our artists again AND increase the print run of the book (1,000 copies).
- More stretch goals will be revealed if we meet the first goal - including a lovely increase in our print quality!

DIRTY DIAMONDS is co-edited by Kelly Phillips and Claire Folkman, drawing buds since the 7th grade. Holding down the fort on opposite ends of Philadelphia, they have been the loving parents of the all-girl comic anthology since 2011.
The goal of DIRTY DIAMONDS has been to give the women of comics a dedicated outlet for telling their stories, and artists from around the world have contributed their (semi-)autobiographical works over the years. Gathering these personal stories has allowed us to highlight both the talents and experiences of women in comics today.
Each of our first four issues were donated in 2013 to the permanent comics collection at the Library of Congress, with an open invitation for future issues (including this one!) to also be included.

Risks and challenges
Over the past few months, Kelly & Claire have done extensive research and created many daunting spreadsheets to plan every aspect of the production of this book. Going into this project with four issues' worth of publication experience, we're confident that this book can be produced with the plan we've set in place.
The largest risk we face is that, if the Kickstarter campaign is not successful, our contributors will not receive payment. The production and number of books we would be able to produce would also take a sharp hit as it would need to come out of our (shallow) pockets, and we would no longer be able to keep the cost of each individual book as low and accessible as we would like to.
With this Kickstarter, we are hoping to make the book as easily accessible as possible to as many people as possible, while rewarding the amazing women who have donated their talent to our book.
For the book's publication, we've worked with our selected printer on another book as a test run to ensure that they would make a good fit for DIRTY DIAMONDS, and so we have a realistic idea of the production timeline.
For our contributor rewards, we have lined up sources for our raw materials and vendors to produce the rewards themselves. Each of the costs involved were carefully calculated, and the cost of shipping each reward has been factored into the price of each reward tier (with the exception of international shipping).
For a specific note on shipping: We have buffered each reward tier with the estimated cost of shipping based on flat-rate USPS shipping. International contributors should take note that the shipping rates are very high for some countries, which is why we needed to include a realistic shipping cost for each reward tier. (We don't want to end up like the dreaded campaigns that don't factor in enough shipping costs and can't provide your rewards!)
No part of this Kickstarter's funds will go directly to the editors as profit. All funds have been budgeted into our business expenses and artist payments, and any extra funds that are raised will go directly into the production and distribution of DIRTY DIAMONDS.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
