We are Dinolion.
Jeromy Barber, James Templeton, and Traci Lavois Thiebaud. Together we are raising money to fund the production of a new immersive theater experience with Merel & Tony.
All funds received will go toward the cost of production and payment for contributing artists. By supporting this campaign, you can reserve a ticket to the show and help fund cool stuff like:
- Production Costs
- Artist travel (Merel lives in Rome!)
- Collaborator & artist payment
- Marketing efforts
In 2017 we produced an immersive theater, dance, and concert experience called Red House. The show brought the music of Black Kite into a physical space inside a historic home in the museum district. We collaborated with some of the most innovative multi-media artists, musicians, and performers in the city to bring this piece to life.
“Dinolion’s projects consistently use technology and immersion to challenge the notion of traditional entertainment." -Houston Chronicle
We are developing a new immersive experience for early 2019. This piece will be a unique voyage through the music of Merel & Tony-- Merel van Dijk, Dutch songwriter, singer, musician and performance artist, and Houston’s Anthony Barilla, composer, musician, and writer. Drawing from our past productions, we will marry theater, music, performance, design, and technical elements to create a unique and intimate story tangled through unconventional spaces.
“...true art, without genre or placement where the music is eclectic and different. (Merel & Tony) make music that sounds like no one else while still having plenty of hooks to catch a hold of your ears and stick with you for days.” -Houston Press
Merel & Tony perform and record with Houston music powerhouses Chris Bakos, Cathy Power, and Joe Wozny. Musically the work of Merel & Tony is sophisticated, diverse from song to song, playful and charismatic. Their work is ambiguous and theatrical, speaking to the importance of human connectivity and humility. It explores the epic and the mundane, spanning global concerns and interpersonal issues. Their songs depict surreal, archetypal characters-- flawed and funny, daring and cowardly, complacent and wanting. We believe their music lends itself to an unusual theatrical experience.
We like Merel & Tony and we work with them a lot. Here’s some of the work we’ve done together:
While Dinolion is mainly a video production and animation entity, as individuals and as a collective we spend our time outside of that work creating unorthodox performance experiences. Experiences that combine our skills as directors, producers, writers, musicians, animators, installation artists, storytellers, and performers.
Here are links to some of those experiences:
This is the work we want to be doing. And we want to be making it in Houston.
Dinolion received the 2018 Let Creativity Happen! Express Grant from the Houston Art Alliance for the Merel & Tony immersive production. This grant does not cover all of the funding requirements for a production of this magnitude, and that’s why we are creating this Kickstarter campaign.
Immersive theater is ambitious work with many moving parts. It takes incredibly careful planning, meticulous attention to detail, a committed team, and ample resources. We hope to create an unforgettable, intimate, experience that stands shoulder to shoulder with the best immersive work around the globe. We are also committed to contributing to a community that pays artists for their time and creativity.
Risks and challenges
We are keeping the details of the show a secret, but due to the nature of the piece, we can only accommodate a limited number of patrons per show. This means we will be hard pressed to fund the production and personnel costs through ticket sales alone. Which is why this campaign is so important.
We understand the risk of pursuing such an ambitious creative endeavor while also juggling paid client work and the stresses of life. Drawing from the successes and shortcomings of our past endeavors, we are prioritizing scaling the piece in a way that is responsible to the work, to our collaborators, and to our audience.
Setting audience ground rules and expectations are crucial to immersive theater. We are inspired to develop unique solutions to establish a clear and safe environment for both our patrons and talent to explore within.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
