We’re making a simple, beautiful, smart doorbell that’s perfect for your modern home and makes your life easier.

With our smart doorbell, whether you're out of earshot in the garden or busy at work but expecting a delivery, you’ll never miss any visitors at your front door again!

Our smart doorbell is made up of three parts, a subtle doorbell button that sits near your door, an elegant doorbell chime that sits in the home and a free app for your smartphone.

When a visitor presses the button, the chime rings in your home and also connects to the Ding app on your smartphone, allowing you to talk with the person at your front door from wherever you are in the world.

At the moment there are either “dumb doorbells” that come with your house or are bought in a rush from a hardware store or “smart doorbells” that are driven by technology, offering you more features than you could ever use.
At Ding we want to give your doorbell some love and also think about what more it can do for you. We believe that you need a doorbell to be:
- simple, that doesn’t need a lengthy user manual to setup or use.
- beautiful, because you’ve already spent a month picking out paint colours.
-
smart, because the rest of your life is already on your phone.

We think that smart doorbells should look small, beautiful and contemporary to suit your modern home, so we made our Button and Chime as elegant as possible.

The Button is as small and simple with a choice of colours and it's slender enough to fit on your doorframe. The Chime is a fabric covered speaker with a choice of textiles, that can either sit on a shelf or be mounted on the wall.

We are making Ding in a CHARCOAL colour scheme which is subtle enough to suit most doors and interiors, but we'll also be voting for an additional LIMITED EDITION colour during the campaign. This will be either TEAL, COBALT or SALMON, so vote for your favourite throughout the campaign. We would love your feedback!

Use the Ding App to receive calls straight from your front door, keep track of all your visitors and also silence the interior chime when you need some quiet time in your home.

Rather than trying to make it an all-in-one security cam, smart lock and motion sensor we want to provide simple, effective communication.
The Button connects to the Chime using DECT, the same technology found in cordless telephones. This provides an HD audio connection from the outside of your house to the inside. It has a great range indoors of 40m and is excellent at getting through the walls of your home.
The Chime talks to your home router using WiFi, the quickest and easiest way to connect your doorbell to the internet.
The Button can be battery powered or hard wired to suit your home it has 3600 minutes of call time from one charge. This should last the average household 6 months with one caller each day from one charge. We recommend that you hardwire the button, but Ding will remind you when your Button needs charging if you choose battery power.

- Attach the Ding button to you door.
- Place the chime anywhere inside your home.
- Pair the chime to your WiFi...then you're ready to go!

Smart on the inside. Ding is a two part system meaning that unlike other smart doorbells, if someone steals your button they won't have access to your network.
It's good to talk. Ding gives you anonymity allowing you to choose how you answer the door, if you want to at all.
Stay in control. Ding doesn't control the locks in your house, so there's no fear of opening up your home to strangers.

John Nussey is a technologist, a proud early adopter of the Arduino prototyping platform and author of ‘Arduino For Dummies’.
Avril O'Neil is a designer and has taught design at a variety of universities, including Goldsmiths and Central Saint Martins.
We've been together for over 10 years working on many design and research projects, from prototyping secret products for entrepreneurs to building interactive installations for artists and museums.
To turn our idea into a product we've grown the team bringing together talented designers, engineers, technologists, developers, marketers and business advisors.

Ding was an idea that we had in the back of our minds for a long time – to design a doorbell that suited contemporary homes.
We were working as design consultants so rarely had time to develop our own concepts into something real. Until an opportunity came along that was perfect, the Design Council Spark!

Over the following 4 months we set about defining exactly what Ding was and how we were going to make it. We went through dozens of prototypes to see what worked, found out what people liked and tested the user experience in the real world.

The Design Council saw promise in our idea, awarding us with funding and named us their most innovative product. We used this funding to further develop Ding with award winning product designers at Map Project Office.
With Map we focused on making Ding simple and beautiful, considering what would make a good button, where the chime would live in the home and how to make it suit modern homes. There were lots of prototypes!

We got married and fresh off our honeymoon we entered another accelerator called JLAB. This gave us the opportunity to work with leading UK retailer John Lewis. Here we've received amazing insight into the retail world and are still working with their buying team to launch Ding after Kickstarter.

To make sure we're getting it right we've been constantly getting feedback. Talking to early adopters at The Gadget Show Live, Kickstarter super backers at London Design Festival and meeting with interior design bloggers.

We've now reached a point where we're really proud to show you Ding. We've assigned our manufacturing partner and are eager to take Ding into production. We’re huge fans of Kickstarter and are so excited to have you join us on our journey.

We started Ding with the simple idea of re-thinking the doorbell. Once we have our smart doorbell in people's homes we have plans to apply the same thinking to other forgotten products.
At Ding we believe that anything is possible with technology, but our real challenge is to figure out what people really want from their smart products so that they integrate seamlessly into our lives.

Risks and challenges
Making a physical product is a difficult task and there can be many challenges to bring it to market successfully from design and manufacturing to shipping and support. We want to see Ding in peoples homes and by backing us you're showing that you do too. We will do everything within our power to get Ding to you and keep you up to date with the whole process.
We're a small company but have assembled a team and partners that have experience in manufacturing, software and bringing products to market, specifically for Internet of Things products like ours.
As a backer you're incredibly special to us and we look forward to keeping you updated on our progress as we bring Ding to you!
