DING provides you with a Safer Ride on your bike with its Patented Two Beam Technology. The DING Bike Light has Twin Forward Beam optics plus an Additional Downward Beam that lights up the terrain below you and your ride, all within the One Smart Light.
DING! The Idea
The DING bike light concept came about after a very near miss one dark night as Des, an Engineer and the creator of the DING, was riding his bike to the pub to meet up with some friends. A motorist nearly cleaned him up from the side.
'I had lights on my bike front and back and although the driver was apologetic, he stated, “I just did not see you”. The words of the driver kept running around in my head. It got me thinking; there must be a better way!'
Official reports show that 2/3 of of bike accidents are caused by cars turning into Cyclist, which means lights shining only forwards and backwards are missing the mark in a big way.
The revolutionary DING Bike Light addresses this increasing problem. That night Des sketched the DING Bike Light idea onto a beer mat. The original design concept doodled has been finessed and engineered to the highest standards. The beer mat still has pride of place in Design Brains headquarters (Garage)
From the onset, our aim was to create a high performing light that is great value for money. With DING’s level of high performance and unique two-beam innovation, it is suited to a wide range of riding styles. From training to commuting or down hilling in the dark, DING has you lit up.
The DING offers innovative light patterns with its patented system of two separate dedicated light sources within the one light. Having two independent light beams provide an extra level of riding safety for the rider.
The Forward Beam is wide and clear with a high colour rendering index, and a kelvin temperature of 5600K. Output of up to 400 lumens to enhance the viewing conditions ahead. The Downward Beam with 150 lumens output shines a perfect rectangle profile of light to the ground around you and your ride, making it easier for you to see where you are heading and letting other road users see where you from all angles. DING offers a commanding shield of light around your ride and once experienced, you will not want to ride at night with any other light
Road cyclists and commuters will love the commanding road illuminating light, as well as the added safety it brings. Mountain Bike Riders will appreciate the DING difference too, with the downward beam lighting up more of the trail, making it much easier to miss those potholes and not drift of your track.
During prototyping, and road trials we had one test Mountain bike rider who used two DING’s on his handlebar. He loves all the extra light for the trails, and we are pleased to report that we had no issues with the prototypes in off-road environments.

We have designed the DING to mount up easily, under your handlebar or even to your central stem. Our research of over 30 different bike lights provided us good knowledge of what worked well in a mount and what did not. We believe the DING has a robust and easy to use mount offering.
We made sure that you could mount and dismount the DING in complete darkness with ease and not get frustrated with fiddly clips or restraints. Our composite silicon strap is 4 mm thick and made from the best elastomer material. The design of our strap has evolved over time and we have continually improved its design intent.
** For peace of mind, as some riders have had bad experience with rubber straps all DING lights will also come with a Spare Silicon Strap to make sure you get years and years of use.
We believe the bike light functions best below your handlebar. In this position, it is out of the way and you can direct your light better, creating a better-lit path ahead. We have worked closely with local Bike Shops, fitting our various DING designs to many different rides. One of the biggest issues we learnt with Bike Lights is actually fitting them. The DING will fit most bars and bike styles. Road bikes with aero profile bars are no problem with the DING mounting system.

Rider Safety solely influences the DING Bike Light design. We wanted to ensure we had the right amount of light positioned in the right areas; this initial criterion shaped the overall look and size of the light. It works differently to other lights so we also wanted DING to look different as well
We knew from our initial research we needed two forward LED optics to create the best forward beam pattern, as just one forward light was not giving us the performance we wanted We also knew we needed to have a separate second light zone within the design that was underside to the front two LED optics to provide the space for the special Downward Beam Optical Module.
The next key challenge was packaging up the Largest Battery possible we could fit within the compact DING to provide the Highest Lumen output possible while maintaining good run times. We also wanted this battery to be easy to recharge and easy to swap out in years to come.
The overall aesthetic we have created for the DING is clean and contemporary. We wanted the light to look as good on your desk has you recharged it as it does on your bike.
Our design aim is to create a premium product that stands out and is instantly recognizable from the many Bike Lights on the current market.
The prototypes we made are good enough to demonstrate with, but the real production off tooling parts will be quality and not look cheap, due to material selection and final applied finishes.
We will use our experience of designing for premium automotive brands to make sure this happens, it is case of knowing what is achievable with you tooling, using the right materials and having the right supplier partners.
The Overall design satisfies are initial belief in creating a product that offered a better lighting solution than other bike light products on the market. We are happy with the result and in it’s capability, after 500 hours of testing over a 6-month period we are happy with its performance.
The product verification tests we carried out ranged from photometric ray tracing, thermal hot and cold cycling right through to mechanical fatigue and vibration analysis. We were only using prototypes, but we did actually machined a range of expensive prototypes from solid plastic to represent moulded parts so we could stress our design to the maximum.
The electronics development within the DING was a complex phase, we made up a number of production quality PCB's and hand loaded all the components onto them ourselves, so we could make up fully working samples of the DING Bike Light. We then went on to completed a whole range of validations on the DING electronics, testing our PCB boards and lithium batteries over many hours, making sure we were happy chappies.
The Ding Mount has changed design a few times over our development period. We reviewed important feedback at different stages from the Cycling industry and test riders. Thanks to all involved whom helped us finally design the best mount possible.
We believe to date we have completed sufficient amount of R&D to understand our product fully, and all its functions. Our design thinking has been verified with our beta testing program, much more testing will be completed as we hopefully go into the pre-production phases.
As automotive engineers we have utilized our design experience fully, and this tells us to test, retest and test some more... But we can only do so much in our workshop, so if we get funded we will spend some of the funds ensuring our product design is the best quality when it goes into final production.
The DING is simple to use with only one button to interact with. The "GO DING" button controls all Light Functions. The DING has five lighting modes on offer. To initially wake up the DING Light from its sleep, simply press and hold the "GO DING" button for one second.

The run time figures are based on testing the light at room temperature. For those riding in freezing cold parts of the world, during temperature testing there was a drop down in run time of 15% at temperatures below -2 Celsius (28F).
Not all LED's are equal
It was important that we collaborated with one of the leading LED manufacturers, we are pleased to have on-board for our project Lumileds. From the beginning, of LED advancement Lumileds have set the standard in automotive lighting technology. We appreciate their input and technical help on the DING product design.
To complement the DING innovation and the design we have had added a splash of colour to the DING Range. You can choose to go all Dark Grey (Pantone 425c); if you like or add a coloured front bezel, it is your choice. You do not need to choose your colour now, that can be decided closure to the shipping date.

The small team of Ding and Design Brains have worked hard over the last 12 months on the DING project. We thought we were going to launch DING four months ago, but like all Kickstarter’s we were super keen to get our product out, only to find we needed more time and effort to make sure we had a product we were happy to share with the world. Moreover, we wanted to make sure our patent applications were just right and that our product had protection.
Des Burns the creator of the DING light has his own design consultancy Design Brains, his engineering background of 20 years plus, is in Product Design and Automotive Design. Over the years, Des has picked up awards for all different kinds of products. His last two Design Awards were for automotive LED lighting products.
We prefer to under promise and over deliver a bit corny I know but its true, We know from backing other Kickstarter projects that the best intentions of On-time delivery date is sometimes dream world, it can cause frustration when it is too far out, you can lose faith.
We have completed a lot of groundwork, so we know we are in a position to go to tooling and from there onto the manufacturing phases.
We have also put in some fat in our time plan, as our experience tells us to expect the unexpected. We have used the majority of our suppliers before so we know we can rely on them going forward. We will provide weekly updates on DING’ progress, it is important to keep backers in the loop and let them know all the important news.
Risks and challenges
We are hoping we can get the DING bike light funded through crowd funding on Kickstarter. It has taken us 12 months of hard work to get to where we are today, but we still have a long way to go. Our core team experience is around designing and manufacturing products.
We understand fully all the process of commercialization and the quality gates you need to go through in bringing a premium product to market.
We have true passion for the DING bike light, as designers and users. We know from our extensive prototype program we can push the design even further into a premium product space. If you are the type of person that appreciates good design and quality gear then DING is for you.
We have reduced our risks by only using quality components and suppliers, are tooling budget is large and reflects the level of tooling partner and part quality we need to make our DING moulded parts just right. Our optics moldings need to be perfect to ensure our beam patterns are to our design intent, delivering performance.
During the assembly of the DING’s we are aiming to use the process of ultrasonic welding, to join some of our key moulded parts together. If we only just get by with our funding, we may have to use a third party to weld the parts for us, if we get great funding we will invest in our own ultrasonic welder and control the process in house.
We will know more about which way we will go depending on the costings at the time of production build and how much we get funded.
Our team knows how to think on their feet, we have the engineering experience to do so and have faced many complex issues before in the commercialization of products, you need to act fast and you need to know whom you can turn to for help get things back on track.
The DING bike light will be submitted for CE Marking for European importing. The European Union’s CE Marking requirements help to ensure that all safety requirements are met. We have allowed enough time in our timing plan for the process to be undertaking properly. We also have experience in this area and believe that our DING Bike Light will pass all the required tests.
The lithium battery supplier we have chosen has a good reputation for quality and safety and currently supplies some of the major electronic OEM’s in the world.
To ensure we can deliver on time, we will have to monitor the critical path of the DING program carefully, making sure we foresee any problems that could arise during the various phases of commercialization. We will keep all backers up to date with information during the roll out of the DING bike light.
We want build the DING Brand and make it a success, to do so we need to make sure we deliver a product to the market that is well received and respected by all its customers.
