Welcome to DimmiDeck! We're Anthony and Alessandra, and we've created the DimmiDeck together to help make it easier for you to teach communicatively and in a fun, engaging way.
The longer video above gives a taste of what we're doing, and how we've created a deck of cards so versatile I now use it in around 80% of my English lessons.
We're here on Kickstarter to fund a large print run of DimmiDecks to offer for sale through our website. In return for your pledges, you will get a copy before anyone else!
We'd love to be able to bring the DimmiDeck to all language teachers and parents, so please see our various rewards on the right to see how you can get your DimmiDeck and help us share them with the world.

What is DimmiDeck?
DimmiDeck is a simple yet versatile collection of flashcards for all language teachers and bilingual parents. Unlike traditional flashcards, each DimmiDeck card is packed with at least nine vocabulary topics so you choose the one that fits your lesson!
The deck contains fifty different characters, each with their own unique expression, body shape and situation. Don't let their simplicity fool you, each character card is crammed with language to be elicited, introduced or practised.
What's more, DimmiDeck features various 'special' cards with extra vocabulary such as seasons, patterns and a few little hidden things we'll let you discover yourself!
With every card containing at least one word from each language set, you can choose any card at random and it will fit your current lesson topic. Alternatively, you can pre prepare a selection of 8 or 9 cards that fit the topic you want to teach, like in the examples below.
There is no text on a DimmiDeck card. The teacher elicits the vocabulary from the students, creates quick match-up materials using our templates, or models it for them. This means that communication is the focus of DimmiDeck activities, and that the cards can be used with all languages.
How Does it Work?
DimmiDeck is essentially three things
- A versatile resource for language lesson lead-ins, for introducing hundreds of pieces of vocabulary or demonstrating various grammatical tenses
- The material for your lesson activities such as describing images, flashcard match-ups, giving opinions, discussion starters or role cards for role-plays
- The cards for dozens of fun games like twists on 'Guess Who' and 'Taboo'. We've designed our own games like A-Z snap, Memory Match-up, Treasure Hunt, Tombola and there more with which to practise new language. Game ideas will be regularly provided by DimmiDeck and created and shared by the DimmiDeck community
What are my Reward Options?
Right off the bat, anyone opting for a reward containing a DimmiDeck on Kickstarter will receive three gorgeous, quirky and exclusive cards only for Kickstarter backers that will not be available in the retail version of the deck.
These include some of our favourite designs - The Clown, The Astronaut and The Pirate.
On top of this, backers can get a variety of great rewards detailed below, including discounts on multiple decks, special 'large' decks and a PDF activity pack. We are also offering something really special at the highest reward bracket!
We can ship to anywhere in the world, broken down simply into three zones.

A huge benefit of DimmiDeck is that just carrying this playing card-sized deck of characters in your pocket means you always have a bunch of lessons ready to go for those situations where you have little or no time to prepare.
Minimal preparation, total engagement. That's what having a DimmiDeck in your pocket gives you!
After using a home-printed DimmiDeck now for a few months it's become an indispensable part of my lesson planning. Seeing the excitement on my students faces when I introduce a new design or hearing them ask to play with them has convinced me that I should share them with the world.
Our prototype DimmiDeck was created really just for my own lessons, and as a project for myself and Alessandra to work together on. However, seeing its success with students of all ages, both in private and group lessons, we're convinced this will be a great tool for all language teachers and parents helping their kids with either their first or second language.
The first real prototype DimmiDeck cost around $30 to make which is uneconomical for retail sale. In order to make these available for our predicted RRP of €16 and have a viable business plan, we need investment for a print run large for the cost-per-deck to be economical.
Just from seeing the feedback from my own students, I know that Alessandra's designs will be hugely popular with kids whilst being clear and clever enough to engage adults too. We have an opportunity to share this fantastic tool with the teaching community, but we need your help!
What are the funds for?
€2900 - Print Costs
Printing the DimmiDeck is uneconomical in small numbers. We will therefore need to invest the bulk of the funding into a large print run. This will make the manufacturing costs more manageable, and allow us to sell the DimmiDeck for the desired RRP of €16. This print run will also contain all the preorder 'reward' decks and bonus cards.
€450 - Shipping
We have been quoted around €450 USD from the manufacturer for shipping to Europe.
€370- Kickstarter and Stripe Processing Fees
The smallest part of the budget will go on the processing fees from Kickstarter.
What comes with the DimmiDeck?
DimmiDeck has 50 different cards, each one showing a different character in a different situation. Each card is made from high quality 'casino grade' 310gsm linen card, printed on both sides with every drop of ink designed by Alessandra specifically for the deck.
The deck comes in a full colour 'tuck box' like a traditional deck of playing cards. They are 'poker' sized, which is the same size as a standard, high quality deck of playing cards (88x63mm). For those familiar with top quality playing cards such as Bicycle or Bee, the size, feel and handling of them is comparable.
Who are the creators?
DimmiDeck is a joint venture from us, Anthony and Alessandra.
Anthony is an English language teacher based in Palermo, Sicily. He is originally from Manchester, and has taught English as a foreign language in both London and Italy.
Alessandra is a graphic artist from Menfi, Sicily. As a graphic artist she has worked on commercial projects throughout Italy, spending time in both Rome and Milan. She is now based in Palermo, Sicily, where she is working on various projects.
Thank you for reading!
We really hope you see what we're trying to create here and that you want to get on board and help us get it made. The least we can do is send you a copy of the DimmiDeck and we can promise you that this is just the beginning.
With DimmiDeck we intend to create an online community of teachers sharing ideas, creating games and activities and sharing tips with each other on how to get the best from their decks and their students.
We already have plans for companion products to work with the DimmiDeck including printable worksheets and materials, games and online resources.
This could be just the beginning, or it could be a very sudden end. We really need your support - do send us a message if you have any questions!
Tell all your friends, share far and wide. We have just 30 days. Let's do this!
Thank you, and fingers crossed!

Risks and challenges
The minimum amount we are requesting allows us to print a large enough print run to cover all rewards and still hold our own personal stock afterwards for selling through our website.
The DimmiDeck itself is completed, the supplier has been identified and prototype, working DimmiDecks are in our hands.
The print run data is prepared and will be ordered within days of receiving any funds from Kickstarter. All the designs, the name, and everything to do with the project is completely our own creation and already copyrighted.
We are dedicated the duration of the Kickstarter campaign to being available for our community, and will not be working our regular jobs during this period.
The prices and handling of the print run itself is being taken care of by a long standing industry leader in board game and playing card manufacture. There are alternatives to this company should any problems arise but so far we have been delighted with their service and quality.
The DimmiDeck is ready, now we just want to share it with you.
If you have any questions, queries or suggestions please feel free to contact us through Kickstarter, Facebook or email. We will get back to each and every one of you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
