The Dill Pickle Club, reporter Sarah Mirk and artist Daniel Duford partner to create Tom McCall & the Oregon Vortex, a biographical comic about former Oregon governor Tom McCall and his contributions to Portland and Oregon. The comic builds off the success of our previous Oregon History Comics project, while featuring better print production, a larger format and color cover.

WHO WAS GOVERNOR TOM McCALL AND WHY SHOULD I CARE? Tom McCall’s story is crucial to understanding the history of our state. He was “Oregon’s favorite governor,” serving through the late '60s and '70s and pioneering some incredible policies in a crazy time. Did you know Waterfront Park used to be a freeway? He’s the one who signed off on the decision to replace the freeway with a park. He created the Bottle Bill and public ownership of our beaches—many ideas illustrative of Oregon’s identity.

WHY A COMIC? History is often stuffy and comics are a great way to tell a story! This comic will provide an accessible way to educate citizens about the legacy of Oregon land use and environmental policies. In short, this project is one way to ensure we stay at the forefront of the progressive, independent policies that earned Portland its awesome, international reputation.

WHY NOW? In March 2013, the 100th anniversary of McCall’s birth, we will release this comic book at a free public event. The final comic will then be sold ($8 retail) at more than a dozen stores in Portland, and be available free for download as a PDF from our website. Once completed, we will also develop class curricula to use the comic as an educational tool in schools.

HOW CAN I HELP AND WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? We need your help. This Kickstarter drive will cover the cost of producing 750 copies with a family-operated Portland printer, and our production costs which include: paying the artist $500, the writer $250 and $250 for program administration.

Any proceeds from sales will support the operations and ongoing programming of the Dill Pickle Club, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to broaden knowledge of Portland's past, present and future. For more information, visit: dillpickleclub.org.

Risks and challenges

Seeing as we have produced 10 comics successfully, this new comic will present few challenges we are not already familiar with. We are working with an accomplished production team that should be able to overcome any potential hurdles.
