About this project
Many of you remember us from our space game, SKYJACKER, and our summer Kickstarter campaign that didn't reach its goal. We promised then not to give up. Since then hundreds of loyal backers have helped us out through our DigiStore, enough for us to continue our work. Now we're back and we're taking the next step!
- What is it exactly?
Starship Constructor will be a milestone in SKYJACKER development and a stand-alone application. Explore over a hundred spaceships from eight alien civilizations, with unique technologies ranging from heavy industry to vat-grown organisms. Rip open their hulls in real-time and see what makes them tick!
Starship Constructor will debut for PC, Mac and Linux. Furthermore, we want to realize a mobile version for iOS and Android (including version for OUYA) - it’s our ultimate stretch goals. Make us do it!
IMPORTANT: Full SKYJACKER game included at Privateer edition and above! Check rewards section below.
During our previous kickstarter we released a small app called Starship Disassembly, which features a Yatagooshee Cruiser III (one of our in-game ships) with all components labelled and removable.
It was a free, cross-platform demo to show off our ability to break any in-game object into component parts. But it’s also a good look at the complexity of construction, the detail we’re putting into every ship in SKYJACKER and the pieces that go spiraling off when you nail one of these suckers with a heavy weapon.
- We're not holding back!
Now that we have the Unity Pro engine, we’re going to bring in every last one of our 100+ alien ships, and expand the basic functionality to showcase everything we have to offer.
- And we can prove it!
- Know your enemy!
We’re not in the habit of making empty promises. Now you can play the Unity version of Starship Disassembly right HERE online!
You’ll meet many distinctive and deadly alien ships in SKYJACKER. Starship Constructor lets you explore these spaceships in exacting detail. In addition to the basic assembly / disassembly toy you’ll test their maneuverability and on-board weaponry in free space, near some conveniently-located asteroids.
- Fly them, blast them, build them...
These are just the most primitive features of Starship Constructor. We have even more presented in our stretch goals, from arcade games to mod tools. Observe our extremely alpha footage of a shooting gallery, or play the demo yourself right HERE!
Really curious to know more? So ...
The ability to break all in-game objects into their component parts is a key factor of space battles in SKYJACKER. This feature is already fully functional for both spaceships and environment details (such as asteroids, solar panels, star-docks and shipyard constructions).
This same feature will be employed in Starship Constructor to explore a variety of complex alien spacecrafts.
SHIP WITH SOLID MECHANICAL ELEMENTS (Cruiser class ships; race of Yatagooshee)
ORGANIC SHIP (small Mother ship; race of Shaarkarians)
Furthermore, we can use these elements to create ship variants and new ship designs. The image below demonstrates that versatility - all these ships use the same set of elements, assembled in different forms.
But we have more good news! The top requested feature for SKYJACKER was for mod tools, to let the player create their own custom designs of existing and completely new spaceships. We remembered that while moving to Unity Pro. Check out the stretch goals - mod tools are now a possibility, and with your help we’ll make them happen!

BOLT-ONS FOR ALL
If you add $25 to a pledge (any pledge) we'll add to your reward. We're calling these extras "bolt-ons" because they add to your rewards, never replace them. The following bolt-ons are available:
- SKYJACKER T-SHIRT - the same designs as in our DigiStore.
- PORTABLE SKYJACKER - the Complete Edition of Skyjacker on a sleek 8GB USB flash drive.
- SKYJACKER SKETCHBOOK - It’s a trade paperback collection of the sketches, roughs, blueprints and outtakes that set the stage for SKYJACKER’s unique style, all narrated with inside information and development trivia.
*** As usual, customers outside the US should add $15 for shipping.
If our campaign reaches $100,000,000, we solemnly promise to fund the research, development, and launch of real spaceships. We will help the human race reach the stars.
But let’s take this one step at a time! The stretch goals below represent milestones that will benefit not just Starship Constructor, but also the development of our space game, SKYJACKER. Today’s achievements bring us ever closer to our final goal - to finish SKYJACKER.
$40,000 - Skyjacker Arcade: classic mini-games, such as Tower Defense and Asteroids, with modern graphics and SKYJACKER game assets. Challenge your friends in survival and score attack modes! How long can you keep your ship intact?
$60,000 - Alien Scrapyard: full implementation of complex physics and detailed demolition. No more Mr. Nice Pilot - rip apart all 100+ ships with the weapons from the game. Blast apart capital ships and convoys, either with AI off or enemy weapons hot!
$100,000 - Starship Designer: expansion and inclusion of our in-house editing tools. Create your own spaceship designs from game assets, share them with the community, and nuke them from orbit. And when the full Skyjacker game is released, take them with you to the stars!
$130,000 - Detailed Interior Design: even more levels of detail for our parts. We’ll add elements such as cockpits, machine rooms, inner tunnels, and the guts of reactors and engine drives to each spaceship.
$150,000 - "Abyss Lights" Books: as you probably know, Skyjacker story line is based on the "Abyss Lights" book series written by our project lead, Eugene Zhukov. The moment we hit $150k the English translations of two first books are paid for.
$170,000 - Starship Constructor Mobile: a mobile edition of Starship Constructor for iOS and Android platforms. SCM will support smartphones, touch-pad devices, and the upcoming OUYA.
We’ve been paying the bills by working with over 100 clients and 400+ projects under the name Abyss Lights Studio, while developing SKYJACKER as our own property.
In 2011 we made the decision to focus on in-house game development and became Digitilus, with offices in Los Angeles and Kiev. Our mission is to aggressively promote the theme of space exploration, using our talents and passion to become a part of the genre’s history. SKYJACKER, with years of development already behind it, will be our first step on this road.
The progress we make in Starship Constructor will help us move forward with SKYJACKER itself. It’s not just the pledges! Each ship we assemble in the Constructor is another ship designed, modeled, rigged, weighted and good to go. Every shader and inheritance structure written is one hundred percent applicable to our ultimate goal - deliver the game we’ve been working on for years.
Risks and challenges
There is no risk of non-delivery. We already have the bulk of game assets completed, from the game engine itself to the models and designs. The work that needs to be done is moving all this content from our own game engine to Unity Pro, adjusting gameplay features and testing everything on several platforms. This isn’t a risk - we have Unity Pro up and running, and we’ve fully tested our in-house conversion tools.
It is a challenge though! And it takes time to debug, playtest, iterate and revise. We’ve been able to get a lot done already through self-funding alone. This is why we can show you not just concept art and pre-rendered trailers, but extensive (if alpha) gameplay. Even with limited means, we can deliver an amazing experience.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Currently we have to reach our basic goal of 30K, which includes PC, Mac OSX and Linux versions only. iPad version of Constructor will be done only if/when we'll reach our Starship Constructor Mobile stretch goal.
To be honest, we really intend to realize it anyway in the future. But if this campaign won't reach that goal this time, we'll do it later. In this case it will be available only for those, who pledged $40 and more, cause starting the tier $40 you will get a full access to all and any add-on and expansion packs we'll do for SKYJACKER, including version for iPad and all of those mobile platforms too.
So we have an advice: pledge $40 and help us to reach that goal by spreading words and promoting us among your friends and your community.
If I'm your early backer via DigiStore, and I will pledge here again, what happens with my past pledge?
Any of your new pledge will be added to your previous pledge. Then we'll ask you, what should we do with your pledge: should we give you two separate sets of rewards accordingly to both of your pledges, or we will summarize your pledges to upgrade your status and to give you a higher reward.
Just don't forget to inform us about this, cause we cannot see e-mails of backers here in Kickstarter, and we cannot be sure are they our on-site early backers or not.
QUESTION: I'm interested in your development, the constructor and the Skyjacker, but before pledging for this i need to know if the selected distribution method will delivery a true DRM-free product.
You have told it will be DRM-free, but if the distribution mechanism is only Steam, sorry folks, but this is DRM on my book.
ANSWER: First of all, we are not planning to include any kind of DRM into our games especially. But sure, if the digital distribution platform, which we'll use for SKYJACKER distribution, requires to include own DRM, we'll be forced to fit their requirements.
But as always, we still have own web-site, where we'll launch own system of distribution for our backers as well.
Currently we have no clear answer to you concerning distribution. There are several possible ways: First of all, we already have preliminary agreement with GameStop (ex-Impulse) and this will be quite real to publish through them. Furthermore, we have an account there in Desura, where we'll be able to distribute our products as well. We weren't pay enough attention on it to date, cause we still have no product to publish there. But we will work on it in the future.
Furthermore, there are such resources as Steam and GOG, where we probably can publish our games. But with this Steam Greenlight program things are getting more complicated there now, so we won't guarantee they will let us to get published there.
And finally, we are planning to reward our backers, by giving them a direct link to download our games from our web-site directly.
So we cannot say definitely right now, where exactly we will get published our game, WHen time will come, we'll worry about this.
Actually we have no blood or mature content there in the game. But probably we will use some rude slang of pirates in the space combat. So I guess, this will be 18+
But pay attention - this is very preliminary answer, cause there is no final games ready yet to be rated now. As soon as we'll be closer to beta, we will work with public rating
