The Project: L-058
In the Halo universe, Linda is one of Master Chief’s closest allies. On countless missions, she’s watched out for him and the rest of her squad from afar. She's a pro with the sniper rifle, and often operates as a “lone wolf”.
This short fan film would cover Linda’s story through the events that ultimately put her on the Pillar of Autumn, which is in the novel The Fall of Reach and an Easter egg in the Halo: Anniversary game.
We'll be filming everything on the RED Epic-Dragon camera at 6K resolution, the downscaling and delivering at 4K for everyone to view on youtube (full 4K download available as a backer reward).
Over the past thirteen years we’ve had nine different games, a mini-series, and numerous books and comics, most of which have expanded on Master Chief’s story. All of these games, however, seem to revolve around the same thing, no matter the alien race: lead male characters fighting to save their species.
I wrote the script for L-058 because I wanted to see something different: a strong female character that has had to rely on her own skills, and not an AI, to finish the fight.
I think it’d be awesome to bring this character to life on-screen, but also believe it's important to show fans how badass female Spartans can be in this universe as well.
How will the funds be used?
Funding is holding us back from creating the rest of the film. At the start, I financed the project myself to get some props and the VFX made for this opening shot/teaser, so we have those to use. I also own some of the production gear we need to make this epic. Therefore, I'm both emotionally and financially invested in this project and want to see it through.
However, there's much more to be done. I’d like to ask for your support to help us get locations, practical sets built, VFX, additional props, and extra production gear we need to bring Linda-058 to life. We'd also love to feed our cast + crew, as well as give them a small stipend for their hard work!
Here's what it took to get us through just the first scene, from concept to completion.
Bam! As you can see - that's a lot of work. The good news is we have those elements now for future VFX shots!
If you’re a visual effects artist, a prop maker, or feel like you can contribute to this project in any way, definitely shoot us an email! Anything to help spread the workload will be fantastic.
We’ve put together some awesome rewards, so be sure to check them out and see what you might like!
Thanks for all of your help!
Risks and challenges
As with many visual-heavy films like this, there are risks of delays due to prop + visual effects creation. However, we aim to keep pushing forward until the final fan film is released. We've put tons of hours into this project already, so quitting is not an option! Funding is the only thing we need to get moving on the rest of the short film!
Additionally, Microsoft and 343 Industries may step in at any time regarding the project for various copyright reasons. If this happens, we will try to work with them to ensure the film keeps moving forward!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
