About this project
In January 2013 Digital Hero Games, based out of Nashville, Tennessee, launched Cowbell Hero on the iTunes App Store.
It is a unique rhythm game that lets you play Cowbell along with licensed music like “Down on the Corner”, “Hair of the Dog”, and most importantly “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper”.
The game features 11 classic rock songs from the 70's as well as 15 original ones like the epic “More Cowbell” written specifically for this game.
We also wanted a game that tells a story. So Cowbell Hero features over 30 minutes of video cut scenes telling the story of one man’s journey from a small town to a rock legend.
The game is still available for sale on the App Store for iPhone and iPad (Get it Here), but it may not be there much longer.
Since the game is already available for iOS you are probably wondering why we need your help. Let me explain...
The commercial music was licensed for three years. By the time the game became available on the App Store, about two years of the contracts had already passed.
The development process was long and full of setbacks, and at the time we had no previous experience licensing commercial music. With dreams of wearing gold plated diapers we pushed ahead and eventually ended up creating a fantastic game.
However, after all the work that went into creating this game, we are at the point where the song licenses need to be renewed or the game needs to be taken off the App Store. For a game like this to be on the App Store less than a year would be a tragedy.
In the immortal words from Bruce Dickinson I say, “Guess What? I got a fever and the only prescription is More Cowbell Hero!”
Here is how the music licenses work.
The song publishers are paid royalties on every copy of the game sold, and part of the license agreement is an advance payment. This advance is a safeguard for the publishers in case the project does not bring in a lot of money.
This advance payment adds up to thousands of dollars per song that has to be paid up front to license this music.
The first time around we paid all the development costs without outside funding. This time around we need your help to pay the license fees.
Let's give this game a second chance and keep it on the App Store for another three years!

Risks and challenges
When licensing music there is always the fear that one of the song licenses will get denied for any number of reasons. This forces you to come up with a backup plan for that key piece of music you wanted to use. We feel the risk in our case is minimal since we simply want to renew a license we already have, but things could always happen. We have heard back from most of the publishers and they have confirmed we are good to re-license the songs. At this point we feel confident we can get every song used in the game licensed for an additional three years once our funding goal is reached.
We also feel risks for delivering the rewards are minimal. We have a few sample items of all the rewards already created and in our hands. The print quality on everything turned out awesome. We will just need to order more when funding is reached. There is always the possibility of a small delay, but we don't foresee any problems.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
