What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. The Problems / Our solution - Raspberry Pi 3 (A, B) now offers built-in Bluetooth chipset, and many hobbyists and enthusiasts do customise their home automation projects (link1, link 2, link 3) using Pi. However, most consumer electronics (TVs, STBs, DVD players, fans and A/C) at home are still using handheld Infrared remote controllers. By using the Bluetooth connection, this IR blaster coined as motedem allows a Raspberry Pi 3 unit to connect to one or more of this motedem via Bluetooth and to issue IR commands. This motedem supports learning of IR codes and has a built-in temperature sensor. Our testing shows that a Raspberry Pi 3 can at least pair 3 motedems (1 to Many architecture).

Problem no. 1)  Current IR blaster for Raspberry Pi in the market come as a daughter board only or with USB wired connection (limited angle, distance, 1:1 architecture) 

Problem no. 2) Many IR blasters (sold in the market) as finished product, usually comes with a mobile app - but these products do not offer any API or SDK and certainly do not support Raspberry Pi.  

Design Inspiration - I want to build a community, but I also want to offer a nice looking, yet wall-mountable wireless IR blaster for Raspberry Pi 3 (connecting via Bluetooth) as a host. There are so many coders, hobbyists and enthusiasts out there, and like me, they wouldn't mind tinkering with their Pi 3, with some coding and to custom-control via Infrared signals to whatever home electronics they have at home. 

Solution - we negotiated with the remote company that we worked with for designing the product, and we developed the SDK and support infrastructure for this community. So technically, we need to overcome the challenges in developing the hardware, API/SDK and to be prepared for the inventory. We have a lot of experience as a software solution house working closely with remote control companies and factories. We think this solution will satisfy hobbyist and may be even system integrators.

Functional and Pretty in design -This Motedem now comes in a beautiful matte-finish white casing that could be mounted on the wall or simply placed on the entertainment unit. 

Wide-angle and long range Infared transmmission - 4 LEDs are placed at different angles (2 pointing upwards, 2 forwards) to ensure a great angle of attack for transimitting IR signals and powerful enough to offer 10 metres line of sight range.  


IR Codes support via Learning - This unit supports IR learning and will be able to store the IR codes of the remote controller of your current appliance or target device. (See red circle below)  

Temperature sensor - A Seiko temperature sensor is preinstalled for use as a temperature monitor for your application with measurable range 0-40c (See green circle below)

Bluetooth 4.2 - Using ST Micro Bluetooth chipset (see blue circle below) with standard BLE support with full API documentation & support.

SDK and reference source code - GitHub ready documentation for Bluetooth connection and IR commands APIs (target to be live at the end of January) and some reference source code will be available in GO and Python (including the learning of the Infrared codes).  

Sample IR codes - We will provide a small sample list of usable sample Infrared codes for TVs. The support forum at our website will be used for developers to upload and share their learned IR codes in future.  

Community forum - at Motedem.com, we will host a community-based forum (not decided which tool to use yet) and target to be ready by mid Jan. You can share codes, IR codes and even applications.

We will prepare of around 200+ pieces of this 3-meter long external IR transmitter cable, which allows you to extend the reach of the IR signals inside an entertainment cabinet, or back panel. This cable connects to the 3.5mm jack (External IR Port) located on the side of the motedem. Support the 3-Pack pledge now and get this. Only 1 cable per pledge of 3-Packs. 

Shipping - We have checked with HK Post Office, all goods will be sent by HK Post - by registered air mail with tracking. This is the most economical shipping from Hong Kong about HK$45 (<USD$5.7). We have also checked using Fedex or Air Parcel by HK Post, it starts to kick in at roughly HK$225 (about US$30 which is more expensive than the unit itself). 

It will be difficult to say how long it takes by air mail, but generally please expect this to be 7-15 days range. And this will not be a door-to-door service (often requiring you to pickup at your local post office). I have recently sent a package to UBC, Canada to my daughter and it took 2-months and may be that was caused by the Canada Post strike. 

We are not responsible for any import duties for items shipped. We will declare each item's value to be at lowest possible.

About Us - We have been the software design house behind the scene in supporting many remote control products - supported by real people, real team with authentic experience. We are however new to crowdfunding scene.

The picture below shows our site visit to a utility company requiring a similar solution using this IR solution.  

For me, I have a vision of building a community of developers around the world that are interested to support this little project (enabling Raspberry Pi) to be able to control IR devices and share their knowledge. This Motedem will prove to be valuable to help standardise a fragmented industry in infrared codes used by all consumer electronic brands.  

The picture below shows my real hobby store back in 2002-2007 in a strip plaza in Mississauga, Ontario, I had supported my local community by mentoring youths in robotics, I was also the Canadian national champion for Tamiya Radio controlled 1:10 Ntiro car racing in 2003, I love science, toys, tinkering and I run Little Scientist programme for youths in my community way before the word STEM is coined.

Risks and challenges

The tooling and PCB have all been tested. The final PCB layout has been approved. We are now preparing all the SDK related and community support forum to support inquiry, FAQ, and also shipping inquiries. We have a lot of international trade experience. However, we haven't got much experience in crowdfunding. So the only risks and challenges for us are whether we could manage our supporters' expectations and ensure that communication are open and transparent.

We will post updates, testing video, production lots, and answer questions in the community forum in order to keep our supporters informed and to be transparent.

This Motedem is a Bluetooth to IR blaster hardware device that comes with a SDK and reference source code. It does not come with any application software (in the form of web apps or mobile apps). It does come with a case that looks like a finished product. This Motedem is for skilled Raspberry Pi coders and developers.

Knowledge of coding in programming language such as Go, PHP or Python is expected on the part of the user to be able to pair the Raspberry Pi 3 (with Bluetooth) to the Motedem and then issue specific IR commands to transmit IR signals. Some basic understanding of Bluetooth protocol and Infrared signals are necessary.
