Update #10

Sea of Stars update - July 2013

Hello, it's time for a fresh new Sea of Stars video update! This time we'll talk a bit about how the game distributes stars and planets, as well as discuss the cat problem before showing off a bundle of shiny new starships!

Speaking of starships, we would like to finally introduce our second 3D artist, Les Betterley (http://lesbetterley.com/ ). He's an industry veteran whose work goes all the way back to the 1990's, and a friend of Digital Eel since we met him in 2001. Right now, he's occupied by the robotic assembler-mechanists deep within the tunnels of Quarnix, the machine hive of the dread Tan Ru. Welcome to the team, Les!

Yeah, we are definitely trying to tackle the issue with combat survivability. Weird Worlds was balanced for a reasonably equipped flotilla of ships, so if you had less than that (meaning, early in the game) you should generally just avoid combat altogether. A big part of that was that the enemy fleets were static - they were just dropped onto the map at the beginning and stayed there until you defeated them. In Sea of Stars we're planning to have a more Roguelike-like feel with weak enemies (e.g. single ships, poor equipment) in the early game, and increasing difficulty toward the end as the player gains more firepower. Some aliens would develop new weapons, some might just crank out more ships if that's their style.

I don't know if I found the combat in Weird Worlds to be simplistic, but there was definitely a very thin margin between mopping the floor with the enemy and dying horribly; a system that's a bit heavier but allows for a wider range of results would be welcome.

Nice to see the game moving forward.

I hope that when you get to combat you make it a bit more interesting, maybe drawing from inspirations like FTL. Simplistic combat was always the main thing reviewers complained about.

Good work, the ships looked good, the Terran Frigate was always one of my favorites! :)
