About

Most of us own pc's or laptops of some sort as well smart phones or tablets. Sometimes they die in a horrible manner or maybe we share them with others. There could be many reasons for why you don't own one of those devices or are temporarily unable to use one.

Should you really be unable to edit your resume because your sister on your pc? Should your school project have to suffer because you have a virus on your machine? Are you only shopping for a tablet to use around the house for cooking recipes and Youtube?

Why not use the console in your living room to get this work done?

Some items are self-explanatory, after all there is a Youtube app available for the Wii U. Other items may require more precise knowledge to use effectively like Microsoft Office Web Apps or Google Docs.

It's one thing to know how to vaguely use these items on a pc, it's another to have to learn how to adapt to using them at the last minute on your console.

The Wii U offers many of the same advantages of Chromeboxes and Chromebooks while being more versatile in some ways and less in others.

1. The system is self managed and has direct updates sent to it by its' creator, Nintendo.

2. Due to the marketshare of the system and its' difference from Windows, it's highly unlikely that it will ever suffer from any sort of malware or remote hacking.

3. The bulk of your productivity will be focused around the web browser and being on the internet. This in turn requires/encourages that data be saved online, which allows for protection of your data in the event of a system failure, storage corruption, theft or a myriad of other issues.

4. The system connects to your tv or monitor via hdmi so that you can pretty much setup a home station anywhere for cheap. The GamePad offers you many of the advantages of a tablet while having all of the computing processed on the actual Wii U.

This guide will allow you to either use your Wii U or direct other people to use it for handling many common tasks without becoming lost or needing to search the web for minutes to hours.

I will switch to using the Wii U as my primary pc for over a month and detail in a simple, yet thorough, manner on how to handle many use-case scenarios normally reserved for pc's.

If millions of people can get by with a Chromebook or Chromebox, why not figure out how to do the same with a Wii U so that you can play superior games as well?

Reaching our goal of $330 will be enough to obtain a Wii U Console ($230 refurbished from Nintendo) and items needed for the editing and publishing process (sub $100 low-end digital camera that will be able to best the camera's on smart phones).

Stretch Goals

$670 - A tablet/pc hybrid for vastly improved video editing and guide editing abilities. (Asus T100 - bare minimum but more than good enough to get the job done)

$800 - A better camera for taking full HD shots and for adding video tutorials of every item in the guide. (Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX300).

Extending the Guide

Anything beyond the above items can be placed up for a vote. Everything from covering other platforms to going after other uses on the Wii U. Nintendo does their own marketing and it's fine, but nothing beats word of mouth. Some may call it propaganda, but how about after you catch peoples attention with work, you get them to stay with an in depth at look at games?

It can be an added section to the guide, but it will come from an enthusiast that understands and follows what regular, disinterested and lapsed people actually care about when it comes to games.

Beyond the Current Funding Options

I will also make available new funding options after the project is fully funded. One of them will net a physical book version of the completed guide. I did not include it in the beginning because the costs of having Amazon print the books and ship them out would cause the funding goal of the core project to increase greatly.

The funds for the core goal are needed to obtain a dedicated Wii U for this project and a decent camera. The books can always be made available if the stretch goals aren't met, the current priority is on making the core project possible then increasing the quality of its' production.

6.17 million Wii U units have been released into the wild. If half of 1% of 1% of that group pledged $1 ( with about 7 pledging $5) this project would be fully funded. This project cannot be completed without you, at least not within any reasonable amount of time.

I'd have to continue to borrow Wii U's from friends and use extremely limited tools for creating and releasing this guide (old netbooks and a Lumia 521's camera). Just $1 can be enough to make a meaningful contribution towards a project that actually needs it.

Risks and challenges

Nintendo could remove the web browser, usb keyboard and mouse functionality, certain web apps and uses with the Gamepad. It's highly unlikely but it is possible.

There could be more depth and issues with using the Wii U as a Chromebox stand-in than previously anticipated. It wouldn't stop the project, it would just delay the release of the guide by no more than (hopefully) 1 month. The goal is to be clear, concise and to have the guide be accessible to children and adults alike. With everyone being able to read and understand it easily, it's more likely to be used and referred to often.
