Ultramodern5, a 5E universal sci-fi sourcebook
Second Edition. Second Printing. New Rules. Full Color. One of the most popular books for 5th Edition is back!
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Thu, June 13 2019 3:59 PM UTC +00:00.
"The game is intuitive, fun, high-powered (something I love in my RPGs) and more important than all, dripping with flavour."
"This book transforms D&D 5e into a proper shooter."
"What Ultramodern5 offers is so much more than just converted and re-skinned D&D races, classes, and backgrounds."
"Ultramodern5 is a great toolkit, providing everything you could need to place a 5th Edition Campaign in a modern/sci-fi/western or similar setting."
In 2016, Ultramodern5 exploded onto the gaming scene. On DriveThruRPG, it earned a Copper badge in a day, Silver in two, finally reaching Platinum after only three months—at the time, one of only two third-party 5E books to do so.
The mission of UM5 was to present 5th EDITION rules for use in non-fantasy settings. These included pre-modern and contemporary settings as well as those in the far flung fantastic future. The original UM5 presented modern and science fiction rules in a game usually reserved for fantasy. There was no established setting in the original UM5.
In the original book, rules were generalized, encouraging homebrew settings and the re-branding of elements, allowing GMs to create a pure science fiction setting or insert rules into their own fantasy to offer a unique spin.
The original UM5 presented a “ladder” system which offered more adjustability with character creation as well as a new lifepath system incorporating backgrounds into a customizable life history where characters could select every aspect of their character’s history, from family and friends to past love affairs.
The original Ultramodern5 featured ten classes, twenty-four archetypes, all new weapons (including traditional firearms, rocket launchers, and laser rifles), New armor (including powered combat suits), vehicles, and over forty monsters (including giant robots).
Ultramodern also included two adventures—a zombie apocalypse and an alien invasion.
HERE WE TOUR THROUGH THE ORIGINAL ULTRAMODERN5
The original Ultramodern5 did not present one world; instead, it provided the tools for GMs to make their own settings within the 5th Edition framework.
In the original book, classes, equipment, and scenarios were generalized.
In this revised edition [dubbed "REDUX"], every facet is being expanded, including adding revised rules for the following:
Where the original Ultramodern5 clocked in at 200 pages, Ultramodern-REDUX is expected to break the needle past 400! This does not include potential DLC that may be unlocked via this campaign.
MORE ART & MORE MAPS
Jeremy Simmons and Nick Greenwood will produce even more maps and artwork for the final Ultramodern5 REDUX.
MECHA RULES EXPANDED TO INCLUDE A FULL CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM.
We will create a new construction system inspired by famous mech construction systems from older RPGs we grew up with. This will be included within the pages of Ultramodern5 REDUX.
NEW MAGIC SYSTEM DIVERGENT FROM STANDARD 5E
Inspired by the occult and dark magic, this system will greatly deviate from normal 5th Edition rules. This will be included within the pages of Ultramodern5 REDUX.
NEW THIRD ADVENTURE "NECROPOLIS"
This new adventure will slam superpowers with cyberpunk in a dystopian future. Necropolis will not be included in Ultramodern5 REDUX but will be available as a FREE DLC for all pledge levels.
Ultramodern5 REDUX will feature a special variant cover edition exclusive to Kickstarter that will not be made available through retail.
“AFFINITY" - SETTING
These three setting books employ ALL the mechanics presented in Ultramodern5 REDUX. Affinity will not be included in Ultramodern5 REDUX but will be available as an add-on for all pledge levels. (See later).
The core Ultramodern5 REDUX will receive a special variant available as an add-on (details to follow).

You also gain access to early builds of the rules as well as the original Ultramodern5, if you don't already own it. If unlocked, it will include the Necropolis DLC adventure. The price being offered is a reduction from retail (get it on Kickstarter to get it cheaper)
This not only includes everything in the ULTRAMODERN5 DIGITAL reward level, but also one copy of the physical Ultramodern5 [REDUX]. The price being offered is a reduction from retail (get it on Kickstarter to get it cheaper)
Nick Greenwood does not do things small. His images are often in excess of 300 DPI with file sizes in excess of 10MB. As a tribute to his talent, we are including this reward that not only includes everything from the ULTRAMODERN PRINT level but also offers a link to private directory where you can download all the images created for this campaign. We offered this previously with our last campaign, and the final directory measured over 12GB in size! This directory will include not only final images but also development sketches as well. Unlike our last campaign, where me made the directory available only when the last illustration was finished, this time, we plan on making it an active source where new images can be found within nearly every week.
This reward level is identical to ILLUSTRATED ULTRAMODERN5 except it will also include an illustrated insert signed by artist Nick Greenwood and writer Chris Dias. Each image will be different for each backer and will be mailed out separately from the core book.
Select this reward if you want EVERYTHING related to this kickstarter, including everything this campaign unlocks, PDFs and art. It includes everything in the PERSONAL ULTRAMODERN level plus anything unlocked via stretch goals or add-ons. Who knows how far the campaign will go and what will get added by the end? Let's hope this is an awesome deal.
A TRULY UNIQUE ULTRAMODERN5
Not only does this reward level offer everything like the COMPLETE ULTRAMODERN5 level, Hugo nominated artist Nick Greenwood will create a personal image of your character (or another image or your choice) which may find itself within the pages of the ULTRAMODERN5 [REDUX] official publication. This is of a limited quantity--only 30 will be made available. (We reserve the right to object designs but you will see works in progress in order to perfect your vision)
Reserved for retailers Only (status will be verified after the campaign closes). This exclusive offer allows a retailer to acquire 6 copies of ULTRAMODERN5 [REDUX] in print. This does not include any downloadable content. Ordering this way will allow you to receive the product for your store before it becomes available through conventional distribution channels.
Shipping is charged at the time we fulfill your reward. See Shipping below.
Ultramodern5 utilizes 5E rules under the Open Gaming License. DEM has previously published six books under the 5E ruleset. Ultramodern5's rules were developed originally for Amethyst Quintessence and were later spiraled off into their own book. A month after the release and meteoric success of Ultramodern5, it was released as an O.G.L. returning to the community the support it gave us. This OGL Ultramodern5 lacks the adventure modules and art but allows others to make their own settings using our rules.
Ultramodern5 REDUX utilizes these rules as the baseline and incorporates the results of three years of consumer feedback and playtesting along with expansions for every chapter. The spirit and function of these original rules will remain intact.

This new edition of Ultramodern5 will replace all previous artwork with new color illustrations by HUGO-NOMINATED artist NICK GREENWOOD.
Nick Greenwoood has worked with Dias Ex Machina for over ten years, having collaborated on numerous projects including NEUROSPASTA, APEX, AMETHYST, and the previous ULTRAMODERN5.
Outside of these projects, Nick Greenwood has also worked on the Star Trek RPG, the Conan the Barbarian RPG, and Orson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show online magazine.
CHRIS DIAS is the founder and lead writer of DIAS EX MACHINA. He has also worked for Goodman Games, later writing OGL content for Pathfinder, 13th Age, Savage Worlds, Fate, and 5E.
In 2012, Chris was invited to join the Friends & Family Playtest of D&D Next, later to become 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons, and was one of the first 3rd party developers to gain access to this system, enabling the publication of high quality content (including Amethyst Renaissance and Ultramodern5) months before competitors.
Chris has published three novels, Aiden's Way, Controlling Chaos, and House of Skye.
JEREMY SIMMONS is a professional graphic & web designer that has been working in the game publishing industry for many years. He has previously worked for Wizards of the Coast, Bastion Press, Goodman Games, GAMA, RPG Objects and Galileo Games.
Formed in 2007, DIAS EX MACHINA'S first publication was Amethyst D20. DEM was the first 3rd party publisher to sign onto the Game System License for 4th Edition D&D and released Amethyst Foundations in 2010, following that up with Amethyst Evolution and Ultramodern4. Amethyst would later be adapted to Pathfinder with Amethyst Renaissance. This was followed by NeuroSpasta and Apex for 4E.
In 2014, DEM ran its first Kickstarter--a color reboot and supplement of Amethyst for SIX different rule systems (including 13th Age, Savage Worlds, and Fate). Over five years, this Kickstarter released twelve books to its backers.
During this first campaign, DEM promised to include 5E support, having gained access to prototype 5E rules before many competitors. This resulted in the release of Amethyst Quintessence in 2016 and Ultramodern5 later that year.
On DriveThruRPG, Dias Ex Machina offers 43 different titles and carries an average review rating of 4.5 stars out of 5.
Their latest book, Amethyst Factions, is the culmination of an epic journey of creation.
Dias Ex Machina wishes to return to the architecture of 5E and Ultramodern5. After three years, we feel it is time to return to this successful book and fulfill its potential as we have always wished.
No longer will we imply ways to use the rules in various settings, we will endeavor to offer all the rules necessary to create virtually any setting one can imagine. Although this book is planned to double the size of the original Ultramodern5, we also full expect this number to go up.
Additionally, several stretch goals include PDF and "Print & Play" components to the Ultramodern5 REDUX features, including a new setting AFFINITY, which hopes to blend in ALL the new rules being established.
Affinityis a proposed setting employing all the mechanics being introduced in Ultramodern5 [REDUX]. It involves three different worlds with common names, places, and themes. This "rhyming" nature caries into three divergent settings.
"GIANT ROBOTS BATTLE OVER WHO CONTROLS A MANUFACTURED WORLD"
Conestoga refers to a spacecraft thousands of kilometers in length built and later abandoned by unknown entities, leaving dozens of factions within remaining functional geodesic domes. Employing giant robots, these factions battle for control of both resources and the remaining hidden technology still residing in the colony vessel as it drifts through deep space.
"SCIENCE FANTASY WITHIN AN ALIEN MEGA-STRUCTURE"
Bythos is a constructed world and the centerpiece within a full-scale orrery. Moons orbit via tethered arms to the core world save one, Abraxas, home of the powerful Aegis who look upon the twelve kingdoms below, tweaking and adjusting the political atmosphere as they see fit. The Aegis are the only ones permitted to operate technology of any kind, forbidding its use to those on planet.
"STEAMPUNK AND OCCULT MAGIC ON AN ALIEN WORLD"
The planet Torus was once the uncontested territory of the Iokon Caliphate. But war with its outlining colonies and an ecological disaster caused the empire to collapse. Later, powerful planet-wide electromagnetic pulses began occurring at random intervals. This coupled with religious extremism prevented advanced technology. They are one of only a few remaining stationary city-states on the planet. At one point, every inch of dry land was covered by an unending cityscape. Centuries of decay and environmental damage has left the massive rail network as the only intact structure.
Dias Ex Machina has a proven track record with a quality products. Not just Ultramodern5, but check out our other offerings, all of which will be available at a discount through the Pledge Manmager
IMPORTANT NOTE "SHIPS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD" is Kickstarter's way of saying that backers anywhere can support our project. It does not mean free shipping. We collect the cost of shipping at the time of reward fulfillment.
This campaign features numerous rewards but only one physical book. The Artist Inserts are mailed through traditional channels and not via distribution. The GM screen will follow the core book.
A few weeks after this campaign ends, we will invite you to review your pledge with CROWDOX. This allows you to confirm your pledge and add on anything that you might have missed. Rewards from this Kickstarter campaign will be fulfilled through Studio 2 Publishing, Inc, which also facilitated (respectfully) the previous Ultramodern5 physical print run.
All backers (domestic and international) will pay for shipping when they redeem their rewards. We’ll offer a variety of domestic and international shipping methods from which you will choose when you redeem your rewards.
You’ll pay for shipping when you redeem your rewards. Please be aware that you are responsible for import duties, taxes, and brokerage fees, and that we must comply with international law and cannot mark your reward as a gift or as a zero-value item.
Risks and challenges
This will be Dias Ex Machina's second Kickstarter. With exception of our epic Amethyst campaign, every other book released by DEM (NeuroSpasta, Apex, Ultramodern5, etc) was release without crowdfunding, those these projects were often completed with a limited budget.
Our Amethyst Kickstarter Campaign only recently fulfilled after over four years of development.
Why did it take that long?
Firstly, the campaign involved rebooting the core book as well as creating its expansion. But the big hurdle involved adapting the setting for not one or two, but SIX different rules. Not only was Amethyst published for 5E, but also for 13th Age, Savage Worlds, Pathfinder, 4th Edition, and Fate. Not only did this prove to be an arduous task, but it also resulted in a single campaign releasing TWELVE books!
As a result, Dias Ex Machina wanted to remain focused on a single ruleset without distraction or deviation.
Additionally, since we are using the original Ultramodern5 as a baseline, much of the core philosophy has already been established. Much of the additional content (Necropolis, Affinity) has already been written, leaving only the logistics of the print run and the art to be resolved.
Chris Dias and Nick Greenwood have been collaborators for twelve years, establishing a working relationship that ensures product quality over speedy quantity.
This will also be DEM's second physical production run, having already established physical distribution through TOGO International in China and Studio 2 Publishing, Inc in Tennessee. As a result, outside of acts of God, Dias Ex Machina hopes weather any issues as they arise. We cannot anticipate all potential complications, but we are not new at this.
Despite this only being our second campaign, Dias Ex Machina is a veteran company with nearly 15 years experienced in gaming. We are also cautious enough to not promise the world to backers--this is why we are not offering miniatures, cards, custom dice, or other novelties. Although we certainly could with little risk, we don't want to be distracted from the main goal.
