About

I want to make my printmaking press kits eco friendly by upgrading to durable, all natural materials that I can pick up locally, thus lowering their carbon footprint.

Hi, I'm Diana. I am an artist and the creator of the Pocket Printmaking Press. The Pocket Press makes it possible to print intaglio, relief, and monoprints without a bulky, expensive roller press. And, unlike most small printmaking presses- print size is not limited by the width of its rollers.

Every press needs a press bed and a blanket, even the Pocket Press. The Pocket Press uses a rubber press bed to hold the plate in place during printing and felt blankets to protect the paper and plate from the pressure of the press. The felt also helps to evenly distribute the force of the press.

My current press bed is made from a non natural plastic, and while most of my felt blankets are from salvage stock, they are also made from plastic. I want to keep providing my press to printmakers, but I no longer want to contribute to the plastic problem.

To do this, I must switch to a naturally made rubber press bed and wool felt blankets. Individually purchased natural rubber and felt cost a lot. When you buy in bulk, this cost goes way down, and this is the price we need to make this eco kit both sustainable and affordable. Besides, buying in bulk happens to be the greenest way to consume.

The story behind the Original Pocket Press Kit. It's going to change a little, naturally.

In 2013 I made my Pocket Press available to my fellow printmakers. I had been using a prototype to press my intaglio, relief and monotype prints for years. It took a while for it to occur to me to make my press available to other printmakers. I realized I wasn't the only printmaker to lose access to a press after graduating from college. After graduating, I moved into a tiny place, and I didn't really have the space or the funds for a big press. I was not alone.

I listed my early press prototypes on Etsy, and I was off. For years artists and educators have been ordering my little press. They like it because the size of the print isn't limited by the width of the rollers. Plus, it's a fun, safe way to print.

Occasionally, someone needs help getting their first good prints, and I am here to help. My site has video resources and FAQ to guide new Pocket printers. I have never had a return in over 5 years of selling Pocket Presses.

Like many, I have grown increasingly concerned about the environment. I am buying groceries in bulk using reusable bags and I have made taking the bus a part of my life. I want my lifestyle and my concern for the earth to be expressed in my business as well. I just need a little help getting started.

About the Eco Pocket Press

The new Eco printing kit will use just one thick high quality 100% wool felt blanket. Both the blanket and press bed will be long lasting but also biodegradable, so they won't further contribute to plastic pollution. Natural gum rubber happens to be a lot sturdier than the imitation rubber my current kit uses. Natural gum rubber won't mind tape and it won't tear. As an added bonus, the Eco Press bed and blankets will be bigger, jumping from 8" x 9" to 9" x 12"! Most etching presses with a platen that size cost hundreds of dollars.

What's Printmaking?

A printmaker carves a plate, either by scratching into it, as shown here, or carving the image out of the plate. For a drypoint etching plate, ink is then applied to the plate and wiped off. The ink stays in the grooves. The plate is then pressed onto dampened paper, forcing the ink out of the grooved and onto the paper! Scroll to see the results.

Below is a relief print experiment I did using a variety of inks and paints on fabric. A linoleum plate was carved with a rounded linocut blade. Scroll to see the plate.

Risks and challenges

The only real risk is, if this project is wildly popular, I could possibly run behind schedule as I run this operation singlehandedly.

    5 Original Pocket Presses

This option is for small businesses and organizations who would like to purchase several Original Pocket Presses. The Pocket Press is fun for classes because it gives restless students a change to stand up and exert some energy when they press their own prints. My goal is to use up my current press supplies as I switch to green materials moving forward.
