A young man's regrets over his past loss surface while working on a case similar to his dead brother. The healing process begins.
Q: What's Restoration Art:
the art and science of rebuilding, or reconstructing, diseased, mutilated, or missing tissue; so as to produce a normal life-like appearance to the dead human body.
Q: What's the Story about?
The Restoration is a dramatic short film about a young apprentice, Sean getting closure for a family member's departure through participating in a similar restoration case with an experienced restorative artist, Joanna. Their skills at transitioning the dead from this life to the next are challenged by an extremely damaged body that lost its frontal features. It's a story about our desire to say Goodbye.
The Facial Reconstruction Method in the film is based on a true event in Taiwan, 2008. If you're interested in how the facial reconstruction method works, please see True Event & Backstory. (CAUTION: links on the subsequent page are graphic in nature)
Q: Who's Making the Film?
The Restoration Team is a group of artists with different backgrounds, graduating from USC (Film Production & Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television), School of Visual Arts (Computer Art), Otis College of Art and Design (Graphic Design), and Rochester Institute of Technology (Film & Animation). We intend to make this project as a collaborative artwork –not only the film itself, but with collective & original art inspired by the film.

Q: Why is this Film Important?
In this film, we’ll explore the world of restorative art –the heart of remains preparation and mortuary cosmetology. The story examines difficulties specific to an undertaking not often represented on film: how the work and treatment done to a body gives dignity to the deceased and consolation to the living. What is being done to a body? Why do embalming, restoring, massaging, and make-up application matter? Who is the work for?
This is the story we’ve been wanting to tell. We all carry the memories of those who went before us, and those who we love. Even though the body becomes an empty shell, the last glance at the face in a casket stays with us. The very act of viewing can give us a sense of closure or completion. We truly believe the film is important, both to us, and on a wider scale, to everyone.
Q: Why do We Need YOUR Help?
We need your financial support to help us bring the world of our story to reality. So far, crowdfunding is our sole source of finances for this film. If we don't achieve our goal, the film will never get made, so we need you. The money will be spent on insurance, equipment, location, special effect make-up, production design, costume, props, and craft service.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
One of our biggest challenges is the subject matter of the film. Death is a sensitive topic, so we want to handle it in a very delicate way.
Independent filmmaking is a risk all on its own. It costs thousands of dollars to run a production safely as well as creatively. Industry standard pricing is hard for independent filmmaking, and making a movie in Los Angeles presents many challenges, including transporting equipment, permitting locations, ensuring the safety of our cast, crew, and the people surrounding the set.
We'll be shooting principal photography for five days. For instance, it costs approximately $2,000 for the camera body rental, not including lenses, accessories and lighting equipment.
We are blessed to go this far with the support of our cast and crew. It is our intent to tell a sincere story and in order for us to grant it the integrity it deserves, We need your support. The money will be spent on the location, production design, props, special effect makeup, and equipment.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
