Who doesn't love laughing at the Bad Decisions made by Fools reacting to unexpected Crises? Bad Decisions, a new storytelling twist on card-matching party games for teens and up, focuses on the humor in the questionable life choices which some people make when the going gets tough. Bad Decisions can be played for a few minutes by 3-4 people on break, or for an entire evening by a dozen or more friends. The bare-bones (no art, half the final deck size) original prototype has been very popular with players at scifi, anime and furry conventions as well as at GenCon 2014.

How To Play

Because of the storytelling character of this game, each Story card can set up literally hundreds of different situations. All players have hands with five of each Player card category. The Bard plays cards for whichever of the categories (Fool, Crisis or Bad Decision) come up in as the first two blanks on that Story card. The other Players complete the story by anonymously playing a card for the remaining blank from their own hands to fill the final blank. The Bard chooses the winning ending to complete the Story, and passes the role of Bard on to the Player next on the left.

Making Bad Decisions With Us

Party card games have been around for a while, and we did our research before embarking on this project. We played the giant, Apples to Apples, and were inspired - but wanted to create something with more interactivity for the judging player. We played the other giant of the niche, Cards Against Humanity, and laughed our heads off - but wanted to create something less focused on crude shock value. We also played other games, both old and new, like MadLibs and Snake Oil. To create our own game, we needed to find out what else had been done, and chart our own course to a humorous and fun play experience. Our core concept was inspired by the pattern we kept seeing repeated, in both real life and fiction: people do stupid things, for the worst reasons.

Because you just can't make up the dumbest stories, we've developed the existing cards for the core set with a headline news theme. We're not just printing just those cards, though. For the final product, we're doubling the size of the core set – and we're taking votes from our Kickstarter backers on what the theme of that core set should be. First, we’ll let every backer nominate a theme through the campaign-end survey. When all the nominations are in, we'll have the $10 and up backers cast their votes, leaving the theme for the remaining half of the core set entirely up to our backers!

HOW VOTING WILL WORK: We will use a transferable ranked voting system. Once everyone has nominated a theme through the backer questionnaire, we will invite all $10+ backers to rank those themes as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, … nth choices. All of a backer’s votes will count toward his or her choice 1 for the first round. If no choice gets 51% of the vote, we will drop the least chosen theme from our option list. Any backer lists with that theme as first choice will then have their second choice counted in the next round of votes. This theme elimination and recount will continue until we get a theme with 51% or more. We feel this is both most efficient and most representative of the will of the voters, as one vote allows everyone to get not just their first choice, but their rank order of all choices considered in the process.

The final set will contain 660 cards – 200 Fool, 200 Crisis, 200 Bad Decision, and 60 Story cards, plus a rules card and the certificate of thanks to our backers.

The Team and Our Responsibilities

This card game was written by Ian Price and his mother Susan Price. The card design was created by Ian’s brother/Susan’s son, Charlie Price. Our video shows the playable prototype first introduced to the public at CONvergence 2014. A second prototype, using the card designs developed for the final full game, will have been created and shown off at Fur Squared 2015 in Milwaukee by the time this Kickstarter goes live! We’ve given you a preview of that art here.

Ian's responsibilities have included writing the game and the text you see here (with input from Susan on both), as well as setting up all business necessities and marketing avenues for the game. With his experience organizing businesses as a paralegal working for his father, and professional game-writing experience, Ian is ready to deliver on his responsibilities. You can see much of what Ian has written here, in the card list for the game. Charlie's responsibilities include all art, design, and production aspects of the project. Some of the production for Kickstarter rewards he will even do by hand - posters and T-shirts, for example. Other portions he will coordinate with contracted production services. Shipping the finished product to backers will thus also fall into his court. His art skills are on display on this page, as well as his tumblr and deviantart accounts.

One additional team member plays an important role: Susan Price, Ian and Charlie's mother, is a professional editor who worked for more than a decade at the technical publishing house Allured Business Media, and now runs S. Price Editorial Services (editing and ghostwriting) and Re/Write: Scribbles to Stories (helping people write better and enjoy it more). Susan edits our game text - and everything else we write, whether for Kickstarter or other marketing copy. She aims for clarity, brevity, correct grammar, and consistent style.  Her influence as an editor can already be seen in the card list previously linked, as well as on this Kickstarter page. She brings to the company a wealth of experience in the publishing industry, as well as from being business manager for her husband’s law practice, and a one-book foray into indie publishing. Susan provides a reliable bastion of order in the chaos of starting a new business, organizing and supporting the efforts of Ian and Charles, by keeping track of all sorts of details.

Rewards

Every reward level of at least $10 includes the ability to vote on the theme of the 330 new cards we want to make for the core set. You get one vote per $10 you spend, and everyone who gets to vote can nominate a theme for the voting, as noted above.
Several reward tiers include the chance to design specific cards. Backers receiving these reward tiers will submit ideas to us for Foolish people, Crisis situations, or Bad Decisions (and possibly Story prompts to be filled in). We will then revise them (while keeping in touch with the backer to ensure the desired theme is preserved) to create a concise and amusing version of the card which will work in the core set. We will ensure that all cards fit with the theme chosen by backer vote, and veto any concepts which don't fit our PG-13 desired rating.
Premium tiers include several unique expansion rewards. These allow the backer to have any cards desired printed as a personalized set. We will give you our input and try to help you get a good quality, concise, and amusing set of cards - but ultimately the backers who choose these rewards will have the final say. Since these are unique cards which won't be sent to anyone else, you don't have to conform to our standards - make whatever's amusing to you!

There are some add-on rewards we're offering in addition to the tiers listed separately. Any tier receiving physical product may add these, and the additional shipping cost is included in the price of the add-on.

+$11 - Additional copy of the game! If you're willing to go in for more than one copy, we're willing to give them to you cheaply.

+$11 - Expanded game box. If your backer level doesn’t already include one, or if you want an extra one because you plan to have extra sets or just that many expansions, or keep cards other than Bad Decisions itself in our box for some reason - add on this much to do so.

Use Kickstarter's "send us a message" feature to indicate which add-on bonus rewards you want to receive. We will also be asking this question in the backers' survey.

Stretch Goals

Depending on how much we get pledged to this campaign, we have plans for what we'll do with the loot.

$10,000 - Funded! We will be able to produce the game at low enough risk that we can afford to do it.

(Rolled into base goal!) - We question your decision-making skills, but reward everyone for getting us this far with halving the cost of theme votes, giving every backer a vote for each $5.

(Rolled into base goal!) - With bad decisions comes experience - the experience of an expanded box for every kickstarter backer. Those who would have gotten a box already get a 35-card Kickstarter only mini-expansion designed for (and by) premium Kickstarter backers. Everyone receiving the mini-expansion will get input on it!

$15,000 - All backers of $50+ get a T-shirt. We will have multiple designs available, and reaching this goal can allow you to get one design for free with your premium backer reward! You can also get multiple designs by adding on a little extra - we will make an add-on T-shirt reward available with this stretch goal.

$20,000 - This amount would completely pay for the print run. In celebration, we will immediately develop and release another 165-card expansion for the public, which will be given free to everyone backing at $50+. If you aren’t already receiving a premium reward, this expansion will be available as an add-on once this stretch goal is unlocked. (Which also will allow those who ARE already getting it to order extras.)

Risks and challenges

Risk: I don't want to put up money and not see product!

Solution: Nobody wants that! But in this case, we have successfully kickstarted and shipped one product already, and everybody who backed that project has something in their hands already. Though the premium edition from that project is still in the final phase of art development, it should be in production by the time this project completes. And this time, we already have the art finalized for everything except the packaging. So developing the text for the final cards is the most labor-intensive task remaining.

Risk: How do you expect to be able to deliver at that price for only $10k up front?

Solution: We have additional sources of funds we will employ if we only hit the base goal for the project. Based on available funds, we've set our base goal to give us the best chance to produce this game for the public at an acceptable level of financial risk to ourselves. What does that mean for you, the backer? It means we, the developers carry some risk we won't make back the money we invest, but you are not at risk of us not delivering.

Risk: What if I can't find anybody to play with?

Solution: Bad Decisions is a game which crosses all demographics. You will. Just ask anybody to play with you and they'll probably love it - that's been our experience, with people of all kinds, and not just typical gamers either.
