What Is Your Project?
Those Who Play is a narrative focused pen and paper role playing game that is designed to give you the freedom to do what you want. Whether it be epic adventures over the sands of Mars, a simulation of the life of an office worker in Hong Kong or character driven dungeon crawling in Narnia. Those Who Play gives you a lightweight, easy to learn system, allowing you to let go and enjoy yourself, without worrying about whether or nit its "functionally viable".
To keep a steady flow of content and support for the game post-release. I will be uploading pre-made adventures, world building tips and other awesome things to www.thosewhoplaygame.com
You can also follow news about development and supplement books, as well as order digital or physical copies.
"I had a great time playing in a session of Those Who Play. It's got easily applicable and flexible rules. The system is pretty rules light, is quick to pick up, and has a bold and novel way of dealing with damage/health."
- Gregor Hutton (3:16 Carnage Amongst The Stars, Remember Tomorrow)
How Does It Differ?
Those Who Play is my answer to traditional RPGS which focus more on builds and numbers than the story.
Those Who Play has no classes, does not impose strange restrictions like 'Wizards can't wear plate armour' and has no optimum builds.
The focus is whatever you want the focus to be and TWP goes out of it's way to give you the freedom to enjoy yourself and create your own world to enjoy.
Those Who Play has Four pools;
Physical, Mental, Spiritual, Social
In these four pools you put your skills and traits (Things you've learned and things that are natural to you).
Your skills and traits define your character and thanks to the variety of skills and traits, you can play however you want. From world destroying god dragon, to inept baker struggling to find love.
To make sure that players have a greater chance of success than they do in other systems; Those Who Play uses a D10 dice pool for actions rather than one singular die.
On top of this, Those Who Play does not follow the traditional turn based combat that, I feel, makes RPGs slow and boring for larger groups.
Those Who Play features a more dynamic combat system that gives every player the chance to act at once, rather than just watching the fastest player deal with any threat before they can react.
This sounds like it has a lot to learn and take in, but the system has been polished and revised many times with lots of different playtesters. It has been designed to be both simple to learn and use. Mainly because I find it tiring to explain the rules to new players every time someone joins.
On average it takes about thirty minutes to start a game, less if the group has played a pen and paper RPG before.
What Will The Money Go Towards?
£430 is needed to print the initial run of 100 books
£200 is needed to pay the artists and get the book looking as good as possible.
30% will be taken by Kickstarter, paypal and VAT
The remainder will be used to keep me alive while I develop the supplement books and run the online store.
To make sure everything will be shipped without issue, I need to ask overseas customers to pay £4 to cover shipping fees. This sucks, I know. But there is nothing I can do about this without bankrupting myself.
Those Who Play is the first step in a line of products designed with the Those Who Play system in mind. The Stretch Goals will allow me to start developing the supplement books full time.
All of these goals will allow me to print a hundred copies, with subsequent copies being print-on-demand.
If we reach these stretch goals, then you will receive a copy of each supplement when it comes out. (No confirmed date for any of these yet)

Why Do You Think You Can Do This?
I have been studying Game Development for four years and playing pen and paper role playing games weekly for longer than that. I've spent a lot of time reading, learning and playing different systems in order to find the best one for me and after amassing a collection of almost a hundred, I decided to make my own.
Those Who Play has been in development since October and has went through many iterations as I've playtested it and simplified and I feel it is at the point where it is ready for commercial release.
Though this is my first commercial product I am confident that it is good enough to warrant £13 and well, everyone has to start somewhere.
Why Should We Back?
By backing Those Who Play you are helping an independent developer get started in the world of game design and that karmatic boost will be enough to make your week better.
Oh, and you'll be getting the book cheaper than it will be once its print-on-demand. And you'll be making the supplement books easier to make as I won't have to get a job to sustain myself while writing them.
Thanks for reading.
Risks and challenges
There are few risks I might face if the project is funded.
If the project is funded fully, there is little that can go wrong except for delays due to illness.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
