What is Narbis?
Narbis is an exciting new development in brain training technology that helps you get more out of your brain.
By doing just two short training sessions a week, you can improve your ability to think clearly and get things done.
Just like exercise for your body, exercise for your brain can help you feel and perform better in all areas of your life.
How Does it Work?
Narbis is a comfortable headset that uses sensors to track your brain activity.
This lets you see what's happening in your brain over time, so that you can start to understand your brain's behavior and patterns.
But Narbis is more than just a data gathering device--it also comes with training programs that allow you to actively interact with this data in order to improve your brain's functioning.
The signals generated by your brain activity are sent to the lenses of the Narbis glasses. When your brain's performance slips the lenses darken, and when you are on your game, they clear.
By practicing keeping the lenses clear, you will learn how to keep your brain functioning at it's best, and even how to shift into a state of peak performance at will.
By doing two 30-minutes training sessions a week, you'll start to see improvements in your brain's overall performance.
And the best part is--once you learn you don't forget. It's like learning to ride a bicycle. The skills you gain during your training sessions stay with you and you can use them in all areas of your life. You can continue to maintain and improve your skills, but you never lose them.
Put on the glasses, connect to the app, and select your program--you are ready to begin brain training!
1. Put on the armband and glasses. Adjust the sensors to a comfortable position on your head--making sure the sensors are making contact with your skin.
2. Use Bluetooth to connect to the Narbis app on your phone, tablet or computer and select your training program.

What's the science behind Narbis?
Narbis is a technology that uses Neurofeedback--which is a kind of exercise for your brain.
Studies have shown that Neurofeedback training increases neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to form connections between brain cells.
The training has been proven to significantly improve people's day to day lives by helping with concentration, sleep, anxiety, memory, self-esteem, fine motor skills, and overall mood. Significant results have been achieved in slowing the cognitive effects of aging and improving learning abilities with lasting effects.
Like shedding pounds and toning muscles by running and lifting weights, Neurofeedback training can positively impact everything from your work habits to your relationships.
Why Narbis is Different
The use of glasses as the feedback device is a significant technological breakthrough. Narbis' patent-pending technology provides an immersive and engaging experience.
It is an instinctive response to clear the glasses so that you can see. Your brain will naturally attempt to clear the glasses so that you will receive the benefits of training with minimal effort.
The glasses also allow you to train in a real-life context. Many brain training programs have you train by analyzing data or by playing specific games--the results don't necessarily translate into your day to day life. With Narbis, you can train in your own home while performing normal day to day activities.
THE DRY SENSORS
Until now, Neurofeedback based brain training has primarily been available in clinical settings.
Narbis' patent pending dry sensor technology provides the precision and accuracy of traditional training devices while offering the comfort, convenience and ease of use of a headset.
Other brainwave headsets have fixed sensor locations and cannot be customized for individual needs or specific training goals. Many do not have sensors that reach the top of the head--a sensor placement which is necessary for effective Neurofeedback training.
Narbis was invented by Devon Greco, with the help, support and inspiration of his mother Lindsay Greco and his late father Dr. Domenic Greco.
Together, the Greco's have been doing innovative work with Neurofeedback training for decades. In the early 1980's, Domenic and Lindsay partnered to provide clinical care to those in need. Their products have produced significant results and empowered those struggling with ADHD, Autism, Learning Disabilities and other related conditions.
Despite their early successes, the Greco's remained keenly aware of the shortcomings of the available Neurofeedback technology. The technology was complex and required clinical supervision. Clients needed to receive an average of 40 to 60 in-office training sessions at 45 minutes each, two or more times weekly. The cost to receive care was high. In addition, the training experience was ultimately boring, requiring the client to view the same simple bar and line graphs on computer screens. This was especially challenging when working with children. The training results were encouraging, and in some cases, life-changing, but the training process left something to be desired.
In 1999, Dr. Domenic Greco learned of exciting research and inventions at the NASA Langley Research Center in Virginia. NASA had been researching attention and performance in pilots using EEG Neurofeedback technology to improve response time and determine the best level of automation using laboratory flight simulators.
Domenic theorized that these flight simulators were very similar to video games and these could be connected to a Neurofeedback device to make training sessions more productive and enjoyable. He experimented with video game based Neurofeedback training and found that it was just as effective as traditional in-office Neurofeedback training in achieving outcome measures of attention.
However, it still relied on third party games and complicated sensor technology that required clinical supervision. He continued his research and experimentation.
Sadly, Domenic was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease in 2009. Alongside his youngest son, Devon, he continued to work throughout his illness on innovation in the area of easy to use Neurofeedback systems. Towards the end of his illness he had lost most motor function, but continued his research using a technology that allowed him to type using his eye movements.
During this difficult time, Devon came up with the idea of linking Neurofeedback training to glasses--literally allowing people to see what was happening in their brains. He was able to share and develop this idea with his father before Domenic passed away in 2013.
Domenic continues to be an inspiration to the work and innovation behind Narbis.

What Your Money Will Go Towards
Your contribution will help fund the production tooling, large component order and software finalization that are necessary to make the first generation of Narbis available to the public.
Reaching our minimum goal of $150k will cover basic production costs. It will help us create custom molds, order the components, and begin manufacturing. It allows us to refine software, making it more user friendly, and complete software porting and user interface for iOS, Mac, Windows.
If we exceed our goal of $150k we will be able to include the following features:
$ 1m will allow us to develop a replaceable battery. This would allow you to swap out the battery in the armband just like cell phone. There would be no added cost in the final unit-- it will come with Narbis when ordered. Replacement batteries will be available in the future on our online store. Keep a spare for extended use or for going on trips. (Price to be determined.)
$ 1.25m will allow us to upgrade from Bluetooth 2.1 to Bluetooth 4.0 which will have improved battery life, and faster pairing and connection. It will readily link with iOS devices. (No MFi requirement.)
$ 1.5m will allow us to develop remote operation. We will upgrade the hardware inside the amplifier armband so that training data can run without the app. The app is used to select a single training goal to load on armband via Bluetooth. When armband is powered on, it will default to the pre-selected goal and automatically begin the session without the app. The data averages for each session will be stored in armband (it can hold up to 50 sessions). You could reconnect the armband to the app to download data for graphing.
$ 2m or more will help us get started on future generations of Narbis to incorporate other training options, make it wireless and more compact, customize it for special applications, produce special edition designs, and more!

NarbisABC is designed for educators. These learning-oriented performance programs are best suited for those who work in educational environments and are looking for tools to help their students. Use at your school or donate to a School or University of your choice. (The school must be a certified/licensed institution.)
Narbis SDK for Developers
We’re offering a platform for you to conduct research and/or develop applications for the Narbis system.
You will receive a complete 5 sensor, (2 active site) Narbis hardware system, Bluetooth armband, and software system that includes 5 program goals: focus, performance, sleep, calm, and mood.
This model includes a fully specified API for application development so that software developers can easily make their apps work with the Narbis system. You can use your brain to control aspects of any app or game.
You can also develop different types of Neurofeedback training screens and games, and create music and art.
Hardware developers can develop Bluetooth compatible interfaces to make brain controlled hardware devices (for example, using your brain to control a toy, race car or a robot.)

-Gold plated sensor tips which are specially designed to gently comb through the hair to measure brain patterns. (Gold was chosen because it is biocompatible and a superconductor, so that it will not disturb your skin and it will work every time.)

What We've Done So Far

- Developed two generations of software App on Android for training feedback screen and training history. Tested successfully on over a dozen different devices.
- Completed alpha test production with Narbis families/doctors, got feedback and refined design

- Designed glasses headset hardware with stainless steel formable sensor arms and internal wiring with integrated sensors
- Validated and optimized hardware configuration using signal generator and oscilloscope signal analyzer using special test protocols

Risks and challenges
We have already faced many risks and challenges in the past two years of developing Narbis from conception. We have overcome many challenges including creating a functional dry sensor design and complete Bluetooth wireless software package and Bluetooth amplifier. Fortunately, our team was able to pull upon our 10+ years of experience in developing similar technologies to get the job done.
We have seen similar products here on Kickstarter face development issues and excessive production delays. We have already completed the development and have hand built fully functional prototypes and have a functioning software package for Android, written in Java. We have interviewed and selected local toolmakers, injection molders, cable manufacturers, and PCB manufacturers who will be manufacturing parts for Narbis and have a detailed plan for manufacturing Narbis.
There are a few unique challenges we might face after our project is successfully funded including refining the software and debugging, tooling and injection molding, and PCB manufacturing and parts sourcing.
Refining Software & Debugging
The software that has been used to demonstrate and test our prototypes was written in Java for Android. We chose Java because of the graphics handling capabilities and ability to easily compile the code for different operating systems. We have not yet completed the iOS, Mac, or PC development, however, we will be using the base Java code that has already been written and tested for Android once the project is successfully funded. In order to expedite upgrades to support more devices, we may be releasing a software to our Kickstarter pledgers to install on their devices to test prior to actual product shipment.
When successfully funded, we plan to add more features to the base software, including games and animations and make the graphics more user-friendly. We are prepared to hire additional software programmers to assist in completing the software modifications as required.
Tooling and Injection Molding
The plastic parts have been designed in 3D CAD and prototypes have been manufactured using 3D printing. We have started the process of modifying the 3D CAD files to prepare the parts for the injection molding process.
Once successfully funded, we will give the completed 3D CAD files to our local tool maker who will use the files to carve out impressions of the parts in big blocks of high quality steel known as tools We have chosen a local, experienced toolmaker who understands how to perfect this process and to reduce the lead times. Once the tools are completed by the toolmaker, they are trucked over to our local injection molder which is less than one hour driving time.
The injection molder puts the tools in a special hydraulic machine that injects hot plastic into the cavities of the molds. Once the plastic cools within a few seconds, the tool is separated and high quality injection molded Narbis parts will come out. There are many variables at play when setting up a new tool for injection molding such as flow rate of the plastic, size and placement of any cooling lines, and the size and placement of gates. The injection molder and toolmaker will work closely together to make changes to the tool to correct any irregular cooling or flow patterns that might be negatively affecting the appearance or performance of the parts.
PCB Manufacturing & Parts Sourcing
Electronics manufacturing usually occurs in three steps, parts sourcing, PCB manufacturing, and PCB assembly. We have selected a local company, a very sophisticated facility with all the pick-and-place, reflow, and inspection equipment required to produce Narbis electronics. They have relationships with the biggest parts suppliers and will manage all parts sourcing to help reduce any supply chain issues.
Narbis has been designed with manufacturability in mind and using the latest components available. One risk in preparing for PCB assembly is that parts may be back-ordered in which case we will be in close contact with our electronics engineers to find suitable replacements.
Narbis contains very sophisticated and sensitive circuitry. To test each circuit, we have designed a test bed which will connect to each sensor and simulate brainwaves to ensure that each signal is being processed properly. We plan to be at the production facility as the first units come off the line to be present for the testing and verification process to pinpoint and tackle any production issues immediately.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
